I'm on a huge reggae kick right now. Especially the sparse pop sound of Studio One, deservedly dubbed back in the day as the "Motown of Jamaica" for its string of hit records. Slim Smith , one of the all-time great Jamaican vocalists, was a force for the label in the late 1960s working alongside prolific producer Bunny Lee. Smith's vocal prowess is evident on "Born To Love," a cut that recalls soul greats like Same Cooke and Curtis Mayfield, the latter of whom helped produce two songs for Smith's early band The Techniques. Smith's career, however, was tragically [...]

another mixtape. It's mostly reggae and rocksteady tunes, peppered with some lo-fi R&B and other echoey jams. I was moved by the raw intensity and intimacy of a lot of these songs, which is why I thought I'd create a special mixtape for them to live in-- a mixtape of reverb-swept recordings, full of desperate, heart-on-sleeve vocals and cavernous drums... It's a strictly 'headphones only' affair. Sound good? Off the top of [...]

[mp3] Slim Smith: "My Conversation" Walking to work this morning, this song was pretty much the only thing from keeping me from just melting away in a fit of anger and sweat. Sometimes music supervisors, even for big shows, can find some real gems. I'd never heard of Slim Smith , and people that I've talked to haven't either. Maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people though. Allmusic describes Slim Smith as: One of the most soulful and accomplished singers of Jamaica's ska, rocksteady, and early [...]

Slim Smith : This Feeling and Stand Up and Fight From: Keep That Lovelight Shining [Sanctuary/Trojan, 2004] Slim Smith is one of the greatest vocalists I've ever heard. It's all in the emotion that sounds as though it's gonna rip apart the song. This feeling doesn't sound like a song. To me I can evision his entire life ripping apart. Not a 3 minute video, but each and every misstep steadily edging toward the decline [...]

Trojan Records was founded in 1967 by Jamaican-English producer Lee Gopthal as something of a sister label to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. It became one of the best-known and successful reggae labels, but it also bought out several independent Jamaican labels and ended up with a pretty good ska and rock-steady back catalog. In 1972, it went through these archives and put out a fantastic (if somewhat inaccurately-named) compilation, The Trojan Story . Although the liner notes were somewhat sparse and the sound rough, you couldn't want a better overview [...]

For Kristin And Jessica Days pass by so seemingly slow Words in my mind are only for show Scattered images cloud inside my head The thought of me without you, leaves so much unsaid Dreams of a life without us apart Dreams of a life that would have filled my heart Pictures of you, trying to envision Dreams of sadness the only provision Clinging to fleeting moments of joy Times where
