Nick Bostick That Arcade Fire will release a new record this year - possibly/probably produced by or at least involving James Murphy - is pretty much a given. But also a given is that it won't be out until Fall, at the earliest, because a) it's already Spring and it's not done, and b) Fall is still when all the big records come out and this is about as big as they get. It would be nice to be able to say that Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld will be able [...]

The last time the long-running, Canadian power pop act, Sloan , came through Cleveland, they were celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1992 album, Twice Removed with a two set show which included the album from front-to-back and a second set of their greatest hits. Inspired by how well the anniversary tour was going, they mentioned how they'd record a new album and then do a similar event for the follow-up to Twice Removed, One Chord to Another. This made the Sloan fans happy. "It's In You It's In Me," is neither from an album of new [...]

Facebook Most bands of a certain vintage these days have at least one of a break-up, extended hiatus, reunion, core lineup turnover, artistic irrelevance, diminishing fanbase, or becoming a nostalgia act in their narrative. Depeche Mode , however, largely bucks that trend. At it - it being one of the most influential electronic/alternative bands going - for more than three decades now, their output may have slowed a bit following their opening pace of six albums in seven years, but since 19872s massive Songs Of Faith and Devotion , they've kept a remarkably steady cycle of [...]

Claire Boucher Whereas the Polaris Music Prize already has a seven year track record of honouring the top Canadian album, the Prism Prize is new on the scene - unaffiliated but sharing a similar mandate, but focused on the art of the music video rather than the album. And while some may have assumed the art form was on the decline due to the fact that their traditional medium - broadcast television - no longer plays them, the internet as well as the low cost of entry to powerful high-definition recording equipment [...]

Frank Yang It's probably a reach to think that Sloan had some sort of master plan for the past couple years that would pull their career from the respectable but not overly remarkable holding pattern that it'd been in for the past few albums and make them both exciting and relevant again, but that's pretty much what they've managed to do. Their twentieth anniversary as a band last year was kept from being a one-way trip down memory lane thanks to The Double Cross , arguably their best album this century [...]

For a lot of folks, Sloan's 1994 album Twice Removed is a watershed moment in the Toronto-via-Halifax band's history. For a group who would become beloved for their jaunty, infectious take on Beatles-esque pop, their career had begun a few years prior with a debut LP, Smeared , that took the best elements of the sounds du jour - namely shoegaze and Sonic Youth -inspired noise-rock - filtered through the innate pop sensibilities of four distinct songwriters. Seeing the potential of the band at the forefront of the [...]

It's hard to listen to rock n' roll these days. Now that everything is given some sort of digital lift — if it wasn't a purely digital product to begin with — rock bands are falling all over themselves to show just how raw and primal they are. Which is a pretty sad sight/sound. It's like when someone tells you how funny he is. Makes me enjoy bands that just made rock music in the style of people they grew up listening to and didn't sweat their audience's reaction. Sloan didn't make much of a claim to originality, and I'm [...]
Canada! Your home and my desired native land! Something something something We stand on guard for thee! My journey to the great white north got off to an undesirable start. First off, I missed opening night of Rifflandia because I could not get off of work in time to catch DJ Shadow or Killer Mike. Sigh. I [...]

When talking of albums that were made at Chemical Sound, Sloan’s Navy Blues usually comes to mind. The album was released in 1998 and was the album to feature their breakthrough Canadian hit “Money City Maniacs”, but there were so many factors that added to the studios dynamics and to why people liked it so much. Chemical Sound was known for its vintage sounds and analogue gear and this spoke to artists that wanted to record there. The studio had its beginnings in 1992 with Daryl Smith who worked closely with Ian Blurton, who is [...]

Michael Halsband Twenty is a nice round number for an anniversary, and Sloan marked their two decades as a band in fine style last year, releasing the milestone-referencing Double Cross and touring a career-spanning set more extensively than they have in some time. Fifteen is also a pretty solid number, so when they busted out a One Chord To Another recital for last year's Fucked Up-sponsored fundraiser , it could also be seen as marking an occasion. [...]

Among the acts who performed were Passion Pit, Beirut, Girl Talk, Dinosaur Jr., Flying Lotus, Swans, Fucked Up, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Wild Nothing, Purity Ring, and DIIV. Autumn Andel was on hand to capture the annual fest in photos for us; check out her gallery above.

Frank Yang To call Divine Fits and their debut, A Thing Called Divine Fits , formulaic will probably be interpreted as a slight, but it shouldn't. The album is rather exactly the sum of its songwriting parts - half Spoon , half Handsome Furs ; a taut and lean thing built on spikes of square waves - be they made by synthesizers or fuzz pedals - and beats so tight they may as well have been quantized through state-of-the-art technology (though they almost certainly weren't). That it's [...]
We recently began a new year of high school, for me it's my last and Maddie is half way there! Maddie, well she sadly has math, but luckily for me, all my classes have to do with writing. Sloan Twice Removed [Deluxe Edition] Murderecords [2012] (3 LP Set) Fire Note Says: A modern power pop classic reissued on vinyl! Album Review: Sloan is easily one of the most underrated and under-appreciated Canadian bands of the 90's. Twice Removed was originally released in 1994 on Geffen records and received little to no marketing support from the big label that was going all grunge at the [...]
