The Best Songs Of 2011 (76 - 100) Making the Best Albums list was relatively easy compared to nailing down the 100 best songs of 2011. The level of incredible music to surface this year is unbelievable. What's more difficult is trying to create some sort of order when laying these songs out, what makes [...]

Tonight is the Denver AFTERDARK Music Festival and the last interview that we have is with Alert from the Whomp Truck. You won't be able to miss the Whomp Truck tonight and we wanted to chop it up with Alert to see what Whomp Truck is all about and what we can expect from them this evening. See you at the 2700 block of Larimer tonight. If you haven't purchased your tickets, you can do so here . Q: How did Whomp Truck start? "Ben Travis, who [...]
I'm fairly certain that Glenn Davis was the first Columbus musician I ever introduced myself to as a part of The Wounded Jukebox. It came after Davis and his buddies that make up the up-and-coming band Way Yes performed in an opening slot for a show that included previous Inside The Jukebox featurees Jookabox. Way [...]

After giving away a few tickets to last night's Wye Oak show a week or two back, I figured I should probably go check it out, especially since I planned on seeing The Decemberists back in Feb before the most overhyped snow storm of my life postponed that show. But this was good, because this is the kind of band I'd rather see in the comfort of The Magic Stick anyway. We missed out on the first opener Jura but got there just in time to catch the upbeat tunes of Indianapolis band <a target="_blank" href=" [...]

Slothpop 's debut album, as I've said in Indianapolis circles since it has only been released here, is likely going to end up as one of my top two favorite local releases this year. Doesn't leave me a whole lot to look forward to, but I'm also glad I didn't have to wait for it. Even with the new album, the band hasn't stopped creation of new music. Zender isn't on the new album, or available anywhere yet, but our very good friends from MonkeyEatsMonkey got a gorgeous look and hear for all [...]

Woodhands have rocked Indianapolis on many occasions. No secret, we love them. The dynamic duo has released a new, free mixtape that features two great Indianapolis talents, hip-hop up-and-comer Oreo Jones and Slothpop songbird Kristin Newborn. Woodhands says... We've wanted to make something free for our fans for awhile, and what better vehicle than the hip hop mixtape that's become a staple in our van stereo while on the road? We called it 'No Feelings' because we basically took all of my anguished vocals out of it [...]

I will always take another opportunity to enjoy, and share, Slothpop in a live setting. Their Laundromatinee session version of One has me itching to hear their full length debut album - due out this Fall. Here is some new video from their recent performance at Radio Radio during the Kaiser Cartel/The Academy double CD release show . Lately, two-man video crew Monkey Eats Monkey have been shooting a lot of great video of the Indianapolis live music scene. We were happy to see them on-hand this [...]
Slothpop are an exciting breath of fresh air in the Indianapolis music scene. Vocally, the band is led by Kristin Newborn and Lauren Eison. With beautifully harmonizing voices and a concentration on projection rather than lyrics, the pair compliments each other better than pearls and lace. Newborn, a multi-instrumentalist and leader of the pack, backs her striking voice with equal parts guitar and piano while Eison draws a bow over her violin and finger plucks the strings. The unique Slothpop sound is rounded out by Dan Zender on lead guitar, Matt Martin on drums, [...]

I don't know much about SlothPop , but I gather she is from somewhere in the great state of Indiana. In spite of her name, she isn't making pop music and I hesitate to categorize her music. Older critics will be tempted to label SlothPop as freak folk, because it's not Leo Kottke, but there's nothing freaky about it. In the same way that some of Grizzlies Bear's biggest tracks are really doo-wop played with different instruments (credit to friend of CotP Mike Who Knows Things for pointing this out), SlothPop's making straight-forward, mellow folk music [...]
