The very first time we headed to Club 1808 was on the official Day 1 of SXSW (our Day 2 ). We'd done our exploration during the day and decided to unwind at the free Moshi Moshi Records party, where the line-up was pretty solid. The Champs were doing their funny dance when we got there. We caught Slow Club , Dark Meat , Casio Kids , Suckers and The Mae Shi in a span of few hours, and that was just our night. The Mae Shi seems like an [...]

The schedule of free shows slated at the South Street Seaport is slowly starting to be released. Who can argue with a good, free, summer show, or ten? The seaport shows will start on June 13 with Children's Day, followed by the New York City Opera performing on June 27th. The shows we want to see won't start until July, with Here We Go Magic and Bachelorette performing on July 3, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart , Black Moth Super Rainbow and [...]

Words and photographs: Tim Boddy You know summers round the corner when: you mow the lawn for the first time in the year (tick), washing can be hung out to dry and actually dries (tick), and live music takes place outdoors (Now tick). For The Slow Club helped launched the start of Bandstand Busking, a free event to be held on the first Sunday of every month in Northampton Square, Islington. A glorious spring day was befitting for the occasion, the gentle folky sound of The Slow Club [...]

After the break-up of the Sheffield band The Lonely Hearts, Slow Club was formed by Charles on vocals and guitar and Rebecca on vocals, guitar, and percussion. The two-piece folk-pop band recently had two of their songs used in commercials in Canada and the U.S. The first EP was released on Moshi Moshi Records, with a debut album to be released in June. The duo has been called the UK's answer to the White Stripes, but they're much more approachable. Their live shows have been supported by groups like [...]

[Slow Club] [Slow Club] [Slow Club] Whether the British have a thing for playing in hotel lobbies or not, I found myself at the Sheraton to catch Slow Club. Having been well on their way through their set, a sizable crowd had already gathered around the corner of the hotel bar, and as any bar environment should be, celebration and enjoyment was abound. You might as well have thrown confetti [...]

England's Slow Club are the boy-girl duo of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor, whose playful singing in their live sets were accompanied by a guitar and parts of a drum set. They played quite a few free shows while in Austin, and I caught at least two of them. The first time was at Club 1808, when the day was dwindling into a festive night, and the second time was the very next day at Red House Pizzeria, when the morning was still fresh and everyone was still waking up to the smell of coffee. I've included two [...]

List Addict's Fridays is back! After a marked absence of the Friday list, I'm back with a new set of songs to entertain and sweeten your day. This week, it's all duets - because it's one of the hallmarks of modern indie music. Also, if you listen to too much indie music, you can't get away from all those sickly sweet duets. I was going to go for some electro-pop, just because I wanted another reason to write about Figurine - but opted for some twee instead. As twee, loves the [...]

Day 3 in Austin was March 19, 2009. We headed to Red House Pizzeria to meet with England's Fanfarlo and shoot a Secret Garden video nearby. Back at the venue, Slow Club had started to play. Then we made our way back to the city where Suckers was playing a super fancy "All That Sparkles" party at Malverde, [...]

The People to Get Excited About if You're Going to SXSW But Would Like Anyway Even if You Weren't Going Mix You're probably wondering what the hell all those letters mean. Kicking off my South By Southwest coverage this year is a massive mix for a massive fest. There's been quite a bit of material I could have covered before the fest officially goes down, and the operative phrase there is "could have." Undoubtedly, it's a gargantuan amount, and the time I've had lately has been minuscule...and I've been lazy. When situations [...]

I originally had this as part of my Moshi Moshi party report but it seemed too good to bury at the bottom of a post. In between band sets, Annie Hart and Erika Forster of Au Revoir Simone did some fine iPod DJing. A cover of Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" caught my ear in particular so I went up to Annie and asked who it was. She smiled really big, saying it was her and Slow Club and that they'd recorded it earlier in the day using Garageband and [...]

The weekend before the South by Southwest music festival, New York get's its own mini-version of it, with bands from Australia, UK, Europe and Canada all making pit-stops here before heading down to Austin. The folks from London indie label Moshi Moshi threw a party last night that actually felt like you were already at the fest. The crowd was littered with other bands (Bjorn Yttling of PBJ, Dev "Lightspeed Champion" Hines, members of Post War Years and The Promised Us Jetpacks) and you had to walk through a restaurant to get to the "venue." It was a fun night. [...]

Every year the music industry heads to Texas for SXSW in the hope of discovering the next big thing. The festival can be a real springboard for bands, Bon Iver & Fleet Foxes were the big successes of the festival last year. Every year the organisers also put up a bunch of mp3s by some of the bands playing. There's probably around 2,000 musical acts, some brilliant, some rubbish and most I've never heard of. But I've put together a few of the ones I have heard of who have mp3s available and who I think are definitely worth a [...]
likesounds.com seems to be the main source for my playlist this month as this is another band they've pointed out to me. I'm told they are from Sheffield, which is always a good start, and that this track is from 2006. I think they have been compared to The White Stripes but I think that is purely because they are a two piece band, a boy and a girl. That's the only similarities I see... MP3: Summer Shakedown - Slow Club (YSL)

okay, time for another "here are some songs that are getting me going today" post. no real theme that i can discern... i like little compilations like this, makes wading through 250gb of music a little less onerous.* ::: john martyn - over the hill (r.i.p.) ::: emmy the great - we almost had a baby (smug but talented) ::: telefon tel aviv - the birds ::: kings of leon - knocked up (lykke li vs rodeo remix) (ubiquitous lykke li appearance, and one of my favourite kol songs [...]

This is just something off the top of my head: a regular weekly entry that I'm tentatively naming List Addicts Fridays (this might change, who knows?). I'm doing this so you guys know you've got something new to read every week and maybe have something to look forward to. In my attempt to be relevant, in the next few weeks leading up till the end of February, it will be all songs about love. Why? Well, why not? Aside from the obvious reason that February houses Valentines day, all songs in general, (in my opinion) are all [...]
