Now that North by Northeast 2011 is over, it's time to reflect over the good, the bad and the sweaty. Here's a recap of what I experienced over those four days. Wednesday I quickly figured out this time around (I've been attending NXNE three or four years now) that even if you make a schedule with who you plan on seeing, it can change for factors other than the music. I was originally going to see Pat Jordache – an experimental guy from Montreal whose album I've been digging lately – but I ran into [...]
I'm sure we have all had the experience of discovering a band at a live show, excitedly heading over to the merch table to buy their newest release, and heading home to listen to the record only to be sorely disappointed that the strengths of that live show wasn't present on the physical disc. Well that definitely wasn't my experience with the...

by teepoo Finally! I met the first band to ever quote me in their press releases. They didn't have their strings or horns with them for the BBQ, but I was highly impressed that they brought the typewriter for Bodies . It's an essential part of the track and watching it done live was just so entertaining! Me and the dudes at Tympanogram ended up buying the vinyl because we were won over by the typewriter. I didn't even mind that I would have to [...]

So, here's the deal. A few days ago I was informed that my squad will be leaving the relief effort on the 22nd (This upcoming Wednesday). This is good for you because: A) The Indie Sabbath will be back in full force sooner than planned, bringing you that same material that has been described as "Cooler than a polar bear's toe nail" and "So fresh it'll turn your chest into a pair of class cutters." B) [There is no B. Actually there are practically no Bees anymore either . [...]

Michelle Ford Another year, another NXNE , another NXNE preview post. I'll apologize in advance if this one's a little less thorough or exploratory than previews past, as travels and general business has taken up time that would usually be spent cruising band websites and Myspaces Facebooks, Bandcamps and Soundclouds. But I can offer one unconditional endorsement for the coming week, and I'd like to think it's not a wholly obvious one: Vancouver's Louise Burns . Her debut Mellow Drama came out a couple [...]

by teepoo Late Night Radio is the second single off Slow Down, Molasses album Walk Into the Sea . Its an upbeat, heart pumping track with uplifting horns that remind you everything is going to be okay. Despite the song being called Late Night Radio , it's a great track to start off the day with. It was a Saskatchewan theme with an Ottawa band that played at Raw Sugar Cafe on March 30th. Playing were: Slow Down, Molasses The Ethics Jeans Boots It was a album release for Slow Down, Molasses which they [...]

To paraphrase John Steinbeck, what one man sees through a peephole - be it whores, pimps, gamblers and sons of bitches - might look like saints and angels and martyrs and holy men to another. Steinbeck believed everybody was everywhere, and it was only perspective that changed the view. Musically, when it comes to Saskatoon's sprawling collective, Slow Down, Molasses , perspective is equally as important. For me, knowing that SDM was originally the singular vision of Tyson McShane , one he augmented with a ragged cast of musician makes the layered, [...]

Slow down, Molasses is a Saskatchewan band (yes, that's in Canada) that is coming out with their second full length release this coming March. As far as albums go, this one has a little bit of everything - this is becoming a bit of a trend with bands in order to not be all "samey" and it really shows Slow down, Molasses...well, being a band...if you get my meaning. The album is 9 tracks that span musical styles from indie pop-rock, almost Radiohead like moments and then all the way to an expansive wall of sound and still [...]

by teepoo Slow Down, Molasses reminds me of a mix of Broken Social Scene and the Arcade Fire with a hint of prairie country mixed it. All appropriate of course as they are from Saskatchewan. They will be releasing a new album, Walk into the Sea on March 15, 2011 . I've got my first sneak peek and I can tell you it's chocked full of effortless emotion. You'll get trapped in a wall of sound and instruments whether it's an indie-pop track or one [...]
![Slow Down, Molasses – Walk Into The Sea [REVIEW]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3143432_lg.jpg)
I wasn't aware that Prairie independent folk collective Slow Down, Molasses is going to drop their second album "Walk Into The Sea" on March 15, 2011. The first time I saw them live was back in October of 2009 . Exclaim has dubbed them Broken Social Scene of the prairies. Walk Into The Sea is their second album and its nine tracks filled with indie folk, alt-country rock tunes. The band surely has evolved in this album. More of a sleeker, wall [...]

Frank Yang Last Thursday night was spent at The Garrison, the newly - opened west-end venue that'll be home to the final year of Wavelength as well as a plethora of other local music happenings. A fine example of this was this evening's bill, featuring bands with long names from near, far and sorta-near-but-not-that-close: The Wilderness Of Manitoba , Slow Down Molasses and Olenka & The Autumn Lovers . Slow Down Molasses represented the "far", hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and were up first. I'd spent some [...]

Last night was the first time I'd been to a show in ages. It's one of those things, like going to the gym, you forget how much fun/how good it is for you until you go again. Of course, it helped that all of the bands were excellent. Band no.1 was Slow Down, Molasses (Saskatoon, SK) who had been touring with the headlining Olenka and the Autumn Lovers (London, On) on their trek through Canada's East Coast which, presumably, took them to the Halifax Pop Explosion. They started slow (hah! pun), [...]
