Winter has always signaled a shift in my listening habits. Summery pop songs are packed away in favor of more brooding, introspective music a la Beach House, Bon Iver, or even instrumental pioneers like The Album Leaf or Dntel. Enter Slow Six , a Brooklyn outfit that released its third album, Tomorrow Becomes You , on Western Vinyl Records back in early 2010. Somehow it slipped through the cracks until only very recently, which is a shame given how much I thoroughly enjoy their own unique brand of engrossing crescendos and powerful melodic releases. "The Night [...]

This week we have a release from several months ago from Slow Six. I don't know a great deal about this band, but they have created some intricately well built melodramatic instrumental tracks on this release. The songs are well paced and most have a great slow build from start to finish, with each incoming element meshing into what has already been created to reach some solid highs by the end of the tracks. In terms of being strong and passionate instrumental tracks, these guys have created some that are as good as any other ones out [...]

Here's a weekly splash of five songs I've enjoyed this week, for once necessarily London-related: His Clancyness - Summer Majestic There's a certain joy to be had in screaming along to songs where you've no idea whatsoever of the lyrics. That's not the only pleasure to be had in this languorous beast from Ottawa's His Clancyness , though; no, you might also rejoice in the rejuvenative pause at the end of the first intense chorus, or exult at the bear-like guitars, chair-throwingly angry and spoiling for a fight, and yet at the [...]

Slow Six is a NYC-based post-rock outfit that doesn't rely on crazy climaxes as much as it does on an intricate combination of violins, rhodes piano and guitar. The songs don't really follow the quiet/loud dynamic so prevalent in the genre, but instead establish a pace (usually pretty quick) and see how all the instruments can play off each other. Each song is a mini-epic, but not because it is emotionally draining. The songs are emotional, sure, but they're still just so fun to listen to. The band is going on a small east coast [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the signing of Liam Singer . Hidden Shoal will release the Brooklyn-based chamber-pop experimentalist's stunning new album Dislocatia in October 2010, preceded by a single in August. In Liam Singer's music, the prosaic and the magical are two sides of the same dusty coin. These fantastical song-stories carry the listener skyward like a clockwork cloud. Produced by Scott Solter, and featuring vocals from Boxharp's Wendy Allen, upcoming album Dislocatia is a beguiling song cycle, rich in wondrous resonant details. Who is Liam Singer? Well, [...]

Stage Fright There seems to be a fixation with the supernatural running through Canadian indie circles right now - or at least through their naming processes - if a few upcoming, high-profile releases are any indication. First off, you've got Ottawa's Acorn , whose long-awaited follow-up to 2007's Glory Hope Mountain will be out on June 1 and carry the title of No Ghost . Their interest in the spirit world isn't new, however, as their 2004 debut - albeit by a decidedly different [...]

beste gelegenheit, um auf das tolle album von slow six aufmerksam zu machen, ist das erste offizielle video zum "tomorrow becomes you" benannten werk. es behandelt den song "these rivers between us" und animiert natürlich eine liebesgeschichte. wie sie ausgeht und was st john mckay smith, dem filmmacher, dazu eingefallen ist, nachfolgend. vorher aber noch der deutliche hinweis, mal bei western vinyl vorbeizuschauen, um das feine album mitzunehmen. slow six - these rivers between us

Just a quick one with some tracks to satiate the seething mass of thirsty indie music ears out there. Especially days after the recent blogger uproar via Google's Blogger platform (see here or here or here or here and finally here for some back story and insight/commentary). Well, lets "try" to put the thoughts of scary deletion of years of blogging work and keep that behind us (but in our minds) and here are a couple of tracks to get you on your way into the day. [...]

From their album Tomorrow Becomes You released by Western Vinyl and IODA Following their 2007 sophomore release for the prestigious classical label New Albion, Slow Six returns to their experimental rock roots with "Tomorrow Becomes You", an emotionally unrestrained full-length infused with taught rhythms & unraveling melodies. In keeping with the Slow Six mantra, this is still music that changes - and changes us - slowly over time - the virtuosic, minimalist hocketing in "The Night You Left New York" slowly giving way to [...]
