This past weekend, our resident hip-hop guru, Michael Denslow, traveled to the Motor City to take in the sights and sounds of this year's edition of Rock the Bells. His experience follows... Rock the Bells evokes mixed feelings among many hip hop fans. On the one hand, the festival is notorious for delays, cancellations and shortened set times. On the other hand, you simply aren't going to find this many great rap acts on one stage anywhere else. I attended the second show of the tour at the DTE [...]

A lot of people might totally hate on me, but I've never really been a huge Common fan, with the exception of Like Water For Chocolate . I honestly think that this album might be one of the best Hip-Hop albums of the last decade. The production put forth by Jay Dee and the Soulquarians is nothing short of perfect, and Common manages to compliment every single beat on this album the way it should be. Jay Dee did a great majority of the production and he absolutely killed the beats on this record. In [...]
A new compilation of songs produced by one of the greatest hip hop producers, J Dilla , is available in stores now. Released on March 31st, Dillanthology 1 is part 1 of what will be a tribute series celebrating the contemporary musical brilliance of the late producer. This first album in the series showcases "some of his classic productions" for artists like Pharcyde, Common, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, The Roots, and others. Check out a couple of my favorites* below. [...]
I just got this track from the Food Chain Collective today and its pretty good. I only say pretty good because if you sample or remix Daft Punk you're kinda cheating. Its already so good you dont really have to do too much to make it amazing. But this one is cool because it takes a Hip Hop take to it. Which is ironic since I just did a post last week on how Daft Punk has influenced Hip Hop. Anyway let me know what you think. Food Chain Collective - Need [...]
I can't really add anything to what has already been written about the sadly missed hip-hop producer Jay Dee (aka J Dilla) , but it's hard to forget the first time you ever heard a Jay Dee track. I remember hearing Slum Village back in late '99 or early 2000. Their material had already been circulating since '96 or '97, when their Fantastic Vol 1 record dropped on indie label Donut Boy Records. It soon became extremely hard to come by and was only finally released properly in 2005. In late '99 there was much excitement about the [...]
Ummm wow. That was my initial reaction when I saw this post at Hip Hop DX . With the initial artist lineup, this looks like (to me) that this is going to be the concert of the year. I know for sure that I am going to be trying like hell to make the Chicago show, because this is something I definitely don't want to miss. This looks like the most studded Hip-Hop lineup I've seen for a show this year, and there are still more to be announced. If you get a chance to get tickets, please do [...]

More than just skin deep.
This is the debut solo album from Detroit producer/emcee, Big Tone. Over 12 self-produced tracks, he lays down an enjoyable collection of rhymes on a bed of rich, soulful backdrops. Tone introduces the album as a tribute to the uses of ink, both in tattooing, and rhyme writing. While the tattoo metaphor doesn't get much play after the first track, he certainly shines a lens on the rap game, and those creating rhymes.

Black Milk is having "Dreams"
Man it seems like the year that Black Milk has been having can only happen in a dream. He released (in my opinion) the best album of last year, and is coming out with more deadly venom this year with a wide array of projects (Random-Axe, Tracks on the new Slum Village, working with KRS [...]
