Geoffrey O'Connor - Now and Then Pretty amazing turnaround for our boy Geoffrey O'Connor here: he's best-known, of course, as the pop maestro behind indie superstars Crayon Fields, and his last solo album - as Sly Hats - sounded exactly like what you'd expect from the solo project of the Crayon Fields' indie pop maestro. Nothing wrong with that! It was an excellent album. But this is DIFFERENT, and INTERESTING (neither of those are euphemisms): instead of warm, acoustic tones and references to '60s guitar pop, we've got the cool emotional ambiguity of '80s stadium-fillers. [...]
Jessica Says – I'll Set The Night Upon You I enjoy this song because Jessica Says' superior enunciation makes this song sound like some mad Elizabethan parlour jam, the kind of joint they'd smash out in Pride & Prejudice while "taking a turn" about the "room". Rad. I mean, you only want to check this out if you have a gigantic tolerance for twee because this shit is cuter than, for example, a long-eared jerboa . Which is not to say [...]

I can't begin to explain my love for this song. It's filled with silly lyrics and has a fun ass beat that will have you and your friends singing and dancing all night. It's been out for over a year now and I haven't heard it out in forever. So I thought maybe I should give it to you guys so that possibly maybe when I'm walking around, driving my car, skydiving or what have you, that someone nearby will be blasting this song and make my day! Everyone wants Muscles . Muscles is an electronica musician from [...]

#11 - The One Shinichi Osawa | myspace | buy Also known as Mondo Grosso, Osawa has forged a solid career in the world of digital music, producing and mixing many dancefloor classics over the last decade or so in his home land of Japan. Despite this, 'The One' is often quite French-electro sounding, which on reflection may not be at all surprising as he recently cut up some amazing edits for Kitsuné and Digitalism. The album starts with the Chemical Brothers massive hit 'Star Guitar' that [...]

geoff o'connor is soft spoken. i have to lean in and cup my ears when he comments. maybe it's to protect his speaking voice from his singing voice. upon hearing him live, his delicate voice grew on me immediately. his first solo release from his mainstay crayon fields outfit, 'liquorice night' has been steadily growing in my playlist under repeat. his compositions inherit the nostalgia and carefree pop of the 60's. not just sonically, but you can really feel like you're taking a trip back in time. avant garde artist always pull from the past, [...]
Oh shut up and drive already... So, it's been a while since we sat around the Castle and watched music videos; we've been busy at work and not in the mood to go to shows, so that's what we did this evening, after stopping at the grocery store after work and ooohing and ahhhing over my new box of records shipped direct from End of An Ear in Austin. When Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive" came on, Pinkie unceremoniously sneered, "This [...]

Adventure – Be Your Own Pet Sometimes Be Your Own Pet can be a little too in-your-face for my liking, but there's no doubt that they're bursting with energy. This song has always been a favourite and I can imagine it being pretty fun live. Liquorice Nights - Sly Hats And now a song that compliments Be Your Own Pet perfectly. It's the side project of Geoff from Crayon Fields, in case you hadn't already noticed. It may be incredibly similar to his normal work, but it has [...]
Sly Hats - Vampire Sips (muslces remix). This song needs to be ten minutes longer. Then it would be perfect. Right now it has everything: a gorgeous melody sung just barely out of their range, dreamy female harmony vocals, and the least-cheesey cheesey house synths I've heard in years. At two minutes and 20 seconds though, it's a lesson in tension and frustration. But those seems to be the colors most often dipped into from Muscles' pallette. He loves to keep things short, leave us wanting more. There's something to be said for missing pieces. With each new jam he...
