You know that part of High Fidelity where Rob Fleming/Gordon starts to list the rules for making a great mix tape? There should be a similar list for covers, encompassing areas like appropriate time frame before the cover can be made, the current vocalist's gender vis-a-vis the original singer, when folk-y versions of rap songs...

2010 was quite a year. It saw graduations, festivals, a move from Athens to Barcelona, the discovery of a new city, a slight, um, slowing down of our blog activity, a World Cup, many flights (17 for me), and a lot of great music. So, without further ado, we present to you: So, how did we compile this rather fantastic list, you ask? Easy, we consulted our trusty last.fm profiles (see the bottom of this page for our individual profiles). We then each chose our top 25 and [...]

Does this guy ever let up? Star Slinger , not content with constantly posting new shit from morning until night (or so it seems), yesterday upped an entire new EP of jams that he apparently just had hanging around his flat doing nothing, probably running up the electricity bill, eating his food, and playing Katamari on the PS2 until 3am, keeping him awake (I think Katamari might just be his video game equivalent). Below you can hear a couple of the songs and if you can muster up the energy to peace on over [...]

The buzzy boy-girl pop duo known as Cults appear destined for a mighty 2011. They've already got themselves a contract with In The Name Of / Columbia Records and will unleash their debut full length in May (details still forthcoming). They're also going on a North American tour, which will see them split bills with Small Black and Asobi Seksu, as well as headline a series of shows in cities like New York, Toronto, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco. An appearance at South by Southwest 2011 is also on the agenda. Below, find all of Cults' [...]
Music is funny. When I started making this list, my first reaction was to look at the albums i listened to MOST. I realize now those albums all satisfied my emotions but probably aren't the best albums released for the year. If you don't like that, watch this youtube video instead. Lists suck. Enjoy. 1 - Two Door Cinema Club -Tourist History This album kicks ass... its basically how i define pop for the year. its upbeat, easy on the ears, fun [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Listening to 'New Chain,' the debut album from Small Black , is like waking up in a Wham video with a 104-degree fever. The sounds are familiar -- particularly if you're old enough to remember MTV's first decade -- but the songs are too murky and disorienting to qualify as neo-New Wave rehashes. According to founder and lead singer Josh Kolenik, the Brooklyn quartet owes its unique aesthetic to a particular [...]
50. Silver Swans - "Secrets" A dark, sexy slice of female fronted post-punk, Silver Swans took us downtown and underground in 2010. Pushed through crowd to the back of the club and into some secret corner with dead eyes and weak hearts, the central lyric is a lie, "I don't think about you anymore." 49. Apex Manor - "Under The Gun" "Under The Gun" both enjoys the comfort of conversation

Not a whole lot is has been happening lately, yet at the same time there is still plenty to talk about. I admit that I'm a little late to the party on a couple of these releases, but I couldn't resist sharing them anyway. Small Black : Photojournalist/Sun Was High (So Was I) - As I mentioned a couple of entries ago, one of this year's unexpectedly great records was Small Black's New Chain . If [...]

Deadboy / Small Black I thought as a new contributor I best enter into the spirit of the blog, so here's my first two chilled-out selections for the bafflingly titled Music For Horses series. My first selection takes an emotionally charged Pop song by Drake, Fireworks from his fantastic album 'Thank Me Later', and twists it delicately into something completely new. Deadboy's self proclaimed slo mo house edit sees the London based (soon to be) bass heavyweight dismantle the track and extract it's soul and emotional core. Focusing [...]
Whether it's the melody or lyrics, the catchiness or repeatability, the party starter or the emotive heart tugger, a song has to make a connection with you. It has to stop your mind whirling and say -- rather, demand -- "Stop and listen!". Of the hundreds of tracks we posted (and hundreds more we listened to) this year, these were the ones we most connected with. The ones that made us stop and listen every time. A quick note on the rules we followed. Basically, like last year, nearly everything released in the year - whether from [...]

Here's one from Brooklyn's Phone Tag , as first heard on the endlessly replayable mix that Small Black made for us a few weeks back . The band - Texan Gryphon Graham , with Bodhi Landa + Eliza Walton fleshing out the live show - says their sound is like "looking up at sunlight shining through the seawater from underneath," which is certainly an apt description for the hazy, soothing tropical pop of " Let It Go ." This one can be found on Phone Tag's 6-song Look and Feel [...]
It's been a while since we published the last Break-Through Bands of 2010. So, now it's time to play catch up. Employing a similar concept as IRC's Top Ten Songs lists, it is in fact the readers - all of you - who are deciding the top new, or 'break-through', bands and artists of 2010. For [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
