Great documentary on Ronnie Lane now streaming on Netflix. Link.

For a band whose original lineup's recorded output only spanned four years, managed to leave behind an impressively rich and diverse discography. Now, the band's Small Faces (Decca, 1966), From the Beginning , Small Faces (Immediate, 1967), and Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake are being re-released by Universal Music. When listened to in chronological order, these four albums tell the story of a band whose output remained remarkably consistent and enjoyable even as its sound changed with the times, from stomping R'n'B covers to tripped out psychedelic rock. Like The Stones, The Who, [...]

There are two really cool things about Austin, Texas, that maybe you don't know: 1. This weekend, an Austin resident will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That would be Ian McLagan, keyboardist for the legendary Small Faces and the Faces. McLagan, who has made Austin his home for about 10 years, will be in Cleveland to accept the induction along with surviving Small Faces mate Kenney Jones and Faces mates Ron Wood and Rod Stewart. They'll all pay tribute to fallen band members Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott. And the other [...]
Filed under: News , Rock Hall Ethan Miller, Getty Images Rod Stewart and his former band the Faces will hit the stage together for the first time in 19 years for their induction at the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Drummer Kenney Jones spilled the beans about the Faces' possible reunion in a recent interview with Music Radar. "We all had dinner about [...]

We are more than chuffed to be offering up the first viewing of Paradise's new video for Diary Of An Old Soul , the title track and one of the highlights from their inspired album of vintage garage rock that hits stores soon. We first streamed the song last month describing it then as ' authentically primal, so reverential in its steady blues chug and psych-pop overcoat that is should come with a "If found, please return to the 60s" sticker. ' Thankfully the video more than does the song justice, reverentially based [...]

In addition to a veteran acts like "Mellow Yellow" crooner Donovan, the late (and quite prolific) singer-songwriter Laura Nyro and '60s "Itchykoo Park" hit-makers Small Faces, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame will be inducting a trio of pioneering '80s acts in 2012: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys and Guns N' Roses. The past year was a big one for the Chili Peppers. In addition celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal, breakthrough alt rock album Blood Sugar Sex Magik (which contained Grammy-winning "Give It Away" and [...]

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 's 2012 inductees will include Guns N' Roses , the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys . The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland announced yesterday its 2012 class of inductees, and it includes the rockin' British quintet the Faces. Finally! The Faces rocked the late 1960s and early 1970s like no one else, including the Rolling Stones. First known as the Small Faces, the core group of keyboardist Ian McLagan, bassist Ronnie Lane and drummer Kenney Jones found themselves at a crossroads when lead singer Steve Marriott left the group. Salvation came in the form of two new members: guitarist Ron Wood and singer Rod Stewart. So in 1970 the [...]
Midterms finally came to an end; and when we collectively wandered bleary-eyed out of the depths of Lau, we realized autumn was upon us. Just as we began wrapping ourselves up in jackets and scarves and digging into our favorite pumpkin-flavored goodies, we found the leaves had changed and fallen and mid-November was here already. We were late for fall. But a few leaves are still clinging to the branches, and autumn's got at least one more weekend of clear blue skies and crisp temperatures left in it. WGTB suggests you savor it while you can, and we made you [...]

This morning, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame announced its nominees for 2012 induction. This year, we've got some intriguing new names on the list, including Guns N' Roses, the Cure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric B. & Rakim, and Joan Jett And The Blackhearts. It also includes a few artists who have previously been nominated, including the Beastie Boys and Donna Summer. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after releasing a single or album, and only eight of the 15 nominees will actually make it into the Hall. And as silly as this whole [...]

I pulled a time-honoured, if slightly risky skill out of the bag last night in order to get my own way, and it came through in spades. I was most pleased! Jonny from the Edinburgh Man podcast happened to have a spare Arcade Fire ticket spare, so I met him in town for a quick pint and we went up to the castle to what was my first properly big gig for years. Gig cuntery, however, made itself know in the most irritating manner as soon as the band started playing. First off, a considerable stream [...]
"If you happen to be a fan of the Small Faces, you might well know about this already. If not, the 15th Annual Small Faces Convention 2011 is taking place next month. " "Specifically, the date is Sunday 11th September, the venue is the O2 Academy, Islington, London N1, with the event running from 4pm - 11pm. For your money, you'll get seven bands, including the Small Fakers playing 'Ogdens' in its entirety, with John Unwin doing the narration. There's also a big screen showing vintage band footage, DJs, [...]
I can't think of a better way to wrap up a week than with a tune or two by Ian McLagan, the world's greatest rock and roll keyboard player. In the first video, he does up "Get Yourself Together" from the Small Faces days. This one was recorded in 2009 with his always-awesome Bump Band. And I can't resist - George and I were talking earlier this week about acts who are woefully ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and McLagan and the Faces are [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Book Club Steve Wood/Hulton Archive, Getty Images Before 1971, David Bowie 's career hadn't really taken off. Other than scoring a hit with 1969's 'Space Oddity,' Bowie had recorded three albums that weren't very popular. But 40 years ago, he recorded two unique albums that would set the stage for his superstardom: 'Hunky Dory' and 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.' [...]

The always-great Ian McLagan. The great Ian McLagan - keyboardist for the Faces, a Texas resident and friend of this blog - has been cornered long enough to talk a little about the career-defining tracks he's either played on, sung on, or written. Mac just finished a handful of festival shows with the reunited Faces (with Mick Hucknall on lead vocals, replacing Rod Stewart) and now he's touring the United Kingdom and Europe doing solo gigs. He won't be back in Austin until October ... so in the meantime check out this amazing portfolio [...]
"For some unknown reason (probably as simple as the wrong master being sent out), a few countries in europe received an alternate take of this track- peppier, a few seconds longer and in my opinion even better than the more commonly released British version. This is from the Swedish release, and it shows yet another side of the genius of this legendary group." via dereksdaily45.blogspot.com

This is the most amazing and incredibly extensive documentary about the Small Faces that I've ever seen, and I've seen a few, being a Small Faces fan as long as I can remember (well, almost ;). With footage from the earliest days and with the participation of the surviving members. Read more »
