by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : Small Factory - Merry Go Round (MP3) If you didn't get tickets to the opening night (4/10) of the chickfactor 20th anniversary shows at the Bell House but would still like to see Small Factory play in New York, they're playing Cake Shop on Friday, April 13 with Air Waves. One of the quintessential '90s indiepop bands, Small Factory formed in 1991 in Providence, RI and [...]

Hopefully - Small Factory What a glorious thing it is when all three of Small Factory come in to sing their parts of the chorus. Three voices that were made to be sung together. And that little pause at about two and a half minutes in, where everything stops and as much anticipation as can be squeezed in one beat is. It coming back, Alex, Dave and Phoebe: " DOOOOOOOWWWN! " Yes, glorious. This song is from the Brilliant Records compilation, Something Pretty [...]

I'll readily admit that I was in a bad mood when I put this one together. It's probably pretty obvious with the selections. The theme was basically a soundtrack to a party at Eeyore 's. I like it a lot though, probably mostly due to me pulling out some of my favorite late 90s indie rock jams. I dare you to not like it, but then again, I won't really give a smurf if you don't. I know, I know. I completely neglected this site, and the months without mixes were lazy. The excuse is that I started a new job, and although I continue to DJ at work, the format in which I do so has changed and makes it difficult for me to casually pull together selections over the whole month. Combine that with me inheriting a vintage record player/stereo, discovering that the coolest record store in L.A. is in my neighborhood, and picking up a copy of Peter Guralnick's Sweet Soul Music to feed my musical knowledge; I've been [...]

The rejuvenated Snowglobe Records returns next month with the third installment of its increasingly crucial Tiny Idols indie rarities compilations. And Vol. III is a doozy, featuring seminal tracks from important but under-appreciated acts including Small Factory , Poole , Fudge and The Coctails . The series is curated by our former Junkmedia colleague Mark Griffey, and based on the track listing he has certainly outdone himself once again. Tiny Idols Vol. III: Transmissions From The Indie Underground 1991-1995 will be released July 6 on Snowglobe Records, but you [...]

>> We walk the streets of this city every day and we still don't know where all the bands spring from. Well, we do, of course , but we're constantly surprised when we encounter another one we like. And we certainly like the quirky pop of Whistle Jacket , which has just self-released an eighth full-length called Hello Heart . The collective is fronted by Michael Leyden, who long ago must have grown tired of hearing the adjective quirky attached to his work. But Mr. Leyden's high, nasal vocal delivery -- reminiscent, yes, of Alec Ounsworth -- [...]

I had nearly forgotten about Alex Kemp . It's been quite a few years since his days in Rhode Island's fantastic Small Factory (Someone needs to reissue their painfully out of print singles compilation Industrial Evolution). After Small Factory broke up Kemp started the Godrays with Small Factory drummer Phoebe Summersquash. That lasted for one album after which Kemp formed the Assassins . To be honest I was never much of a Godrays fan and I didn't know about the Assassins until looking at Kemp's biography, but those Small Factory [...]

Which is kind of crazy. A number of years ago, just before my 18th birthday, I put on a show at my Dad's "farm" that featured some of the earlier Slumberland-related acts like Lilys, Swirlies, and Small Factory. When the label was based in D.C. It lasted two of the hottest days in July. Hundreds of people showed and my father regretted his decision to let me try my hand at show promotion when someone almost burnt down a few trees with fireworks. I'd wanted to book Velocity Girl, but for some reason it hadn't worked out. They were probably [...]
Ampersand On a recent online hunt for Juniper records I ended up on the Fantastic Records website, where I'd also ended up several times in the past, only this time I had some expendable cash. Alongside #Poundsign#, Juniper, and The Shapiros, there were a few names that were pretty unfamiliar to me, so I took a look through the catalog. After a quick listen to "Tokyo Girl" by Ampersand, I immediately ordered their <<<<<<<< EP (along with a Sparklers 7" – more on that later). I can't recall being as excited [...]
Boy Genius I have to admit, I wasn't all too into Brooklyn band Boy Genius when I first heard them last year, but upon hearing their new single "Blame Love" about a month ago, I'll proudly fly the Boy genius flag now. "Blame Love" sounds to me like some great Small Factory song that sadly never was. No worries though, because Boy Genius wear it well. They deliver perfect boy/girl harmonies in all the right spots and right where I was hoping for it – a killer solo! I reckon Alex, Dave, and Phoebe [...]

>> We've received a lot of emails lately about two of our favorite '90s acts, Kam Fong (really, two emails recently) and Small Factory . As we quipped to one of our correspondents, we are ready for the Small Factory reunion. Just sitting here waiting for it. Ready. Waiting. Pretending it's sunny, even... Anyway, while a reunion of the Providence, RI-spawned trio seems unlikely, we were excited to see action at SF bassist and singer Alex Kemp 's MySpace dojo . Mr. Kemp, now the creative director of a music production company and [...]

>> This is our 1,000th post. Yeah. It would have been nice to have had some big retrospective with shiny pictures and stuff that goes ping to mark the occasion, but then again, that's not our style. >> So we were minding our own business Saturday at a social event when we happened upon two former members of Boston chimp-gaze superstars Swirlies goofing around in a basement practice space. After convincing said players that in fact the band had had fans, and that we were one of them, we turned to the charming young fellow [...]

Song 14 of 19 in the ...One Last Kiss retread , otherwise known as After the Last Kiss... Back in 1993 Providence, Rhode Island's Small Factory was one of my favorite bands. Their first album For I Do Not Love You had the right combination of bright, bouncy, lo-fi pop, rushes of guitar freakouts, a perfect cover of Lois's Valentine, and a girl drummer who also sang in Phoebe Summersquash. Actually all three of the band wrote and sang with bassist Alex Kemp [...]

Who says early shows suck? NYC Popfest 's happy hour show at Piano's was blast and Pants Yell! 's show in particular was a corker and may take the prize of Best Performance at NYC Popfest 2008. (I missed Tullycraft... more on why in a bit.) A tight cohesive trio with a beast of a drummer, Pants Yell! were on fire (no cats needed) in the packed room. On their excellent debut from late last year, Alison Statton , they sound polite, but live it's more hyperkinetic. You could [...]

Goosepimples or goosebumps? As the fine sounds purveyed on this classic, classic comp pass through the tempanic membrane, indiepoppinfreshman and veterans alike can contemplate which term is more apt (less gross?). The star studded cast includes Swirlies, Suddenly Tammy!, Lorelei, Veronica Lake, The Magnetic Fields, White Town, Honey Bunch, Swirl, Our American Cousins, Tree Fort Angst, Crayon, Jane Pow, Whorl, Small Factory, Velocity Girl, Courtney Love, Lilys, Black Tambourine, and Wimp Factor 14. Seriously. All on one hunk of aluminum, thanks to SpinArt 's debut CD release from 1992. Sample mp3: Small Factory - [...]

I was too late to become one of the 633 official members of this "singles club", but with some effort I managed to collect all 12 of the Working Holiday Series released monthly on Simple Machines in 1993 (they sold an extra 1200 per month to non-subscribers). Subscribers got some other nifty gifts, including a calendar, a storage box, a birthday gift, and an invitation to hear most of the bands play at a special 3-day concert to celebrate the completion of the series. I didn't get these bonuses but what I did get from this collection was: [...]

I really don't remember where I first heard this Small Factory song, but I feel like it was on a Darla compilation or something. Maybe Little Darla Has A Treat For You Vol. 1 ? The CD's back in New York so we'll never really know. But I love it. As in, I want to make it my 'valentine' love it. I like the way it starts so sweet but ends up so angry. Almost like a metaphor for something... But the best line has to be the "But if you break my [...]
