If it's December at You Ain't No Picasso, then it's time for Mixmas! Every year I like to turn YANP over to some of my favorite bands to showcase some of their favorite songs through a themed mix. They pick a theme, five songs that fit the theme and then share a little about why [...]

MP3: Smog - I Could Drive Forever I could probably do a Smog week or month of all of the best songs ever Bill Callahan gave us. But "I Could Drive Forever" from 1999's "Knock Knock" was one of the first songs I heard from him that really stopped me in my tracks and made me sit down & shut up. It's a common emotion with his material, but the first is always the deepest and lately for me this one has sang true.

No White Stripes, no Radiohead, no Flaming Lips, no The Streets or Burial or many other great bands. All those bands, and many others, made records with some great songs on (damn, Flaming Lips made the best song of the decade). These are all albums that I still play, still love, and still listen to all the way through . Now, I haven't gone crazy in the descriptions because I know I'll get to all of these artists as part of my Pitchfork 500 stint , so it's 100 words or less. Long-time readers [...]

Seconds after my brother put Smog's Red Apple Falls on the record player, I saw that You Ain't No Picasso posted that Bill Callahan (Smog) was coming to Lexington on December 7th . The fates are spinning around my head. Next record: Flaming Lips? I digress. Callahan will be playing at Cosmic Charlies. I've never been there, but seems like a cool place. Tickets are $8 bucks. I'm seriously considering making the trip down there. A nice little Monday. Bill Callahan Cosmic Charlies (Lexington, Kentucky) Monday, December 7th. $8 [...]

Smog - Ex-Con The Mud Hut

Any film that shares its title with a Wilco song is likely to grab my attention so it's unsurprising that my eyes were drawn towards Passenger Side when I saw it the London Film Festival programme. That it also promised a soundtrack featuring the Silver Jews , Smog and Dinosaur Jr only eased my decision to buy tickets. It's great little low-key movie about two brothers in Los Angeles. You'll get a flavour of the film from the trailer below, and best of all, a glimpse [...]

so i've just finished the third revision of my top 100 albums list — which to avoid confusion/arguments is a personal selection, not an attempt at a best of all time list — and to build some interest/excitement in the list beyond myself and the 1-2 other people that have traditionally cared about this i've decided to do a ten day countdown leading up to my number 1 album choice, vh1 best [whatever] of [decade] style. [100 - [...]

ah the hidden treasures, lurking dusty behind shelves and in drawers and cupboards and shinyshinyboxes; in dvd cases, wrong cases, suitcases; used as bookmarks, balancing devices and in one case a stand for muppet toys. all these lovely treats hidden away for me to find as part of some elaborate logistical orwellian nightmare i call moving house. you know the book house of leaves ? you know the movie cube (and it's sequels (but not gleaming the cube))? that's my spare room. honest to christ. still haven't found my ted leo cd. have [...]
i've slowly begun working on the third revision of my personal top 100 albums list. as planned, this year i am making the transition to a one album per artist limit... which has automatically disqualified twenty excellent albums from last year's list (see below). this has been a hard step for me to take, but i think one that was ultimately necessary to maintain the integrity of the list. there are definitely benefits to allowing multiple albums per artist... a second favorite album pick can in some cases tell more about a person's tastes than what [...]
Bill Callahan played two very rare shows in London this week. Platform was there for the first and even stole a few words from the mystery man himself.

OK, I know its been a while since i posted my last thingy, but lets just say ive been a little busy. I recently finished this project with one of my favorite veteran rappers, Ras Kass. We had the honor of recording it at the Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica, where I was told Erykah Badu and Metallica record. Ive decided to share it with anyone whose up for hearing some fresh #dubstep, influenced by some good ole fashion swag! [...]

Image From Here During the summer, down here on the Florida East Coast, we typically get a brief rain shower in the late afternoon. I don't know all the reasons why it happens that way but it usually does. Lately, we have been getting a lot of storms, more than usual. It may be odd to say but I like these summer rain showers. There is something cleansing about these storms and the rain. And there is also something beautiful when it is mixed with thunder and lightning. I know that may sound weird to [...]

did bill really bang out an 11 minute version of "cold blooded old times"? yes, yes he did. and you thought smogs couldnt jam video: bill callahan - cold blooded old times

Well, we are nearing the end of our time in Puglia. We're spending a couple of days in or near Napoli before we fly back on Sunday, presumably troughing like total pigs, rather than paying all that much attention to culture and all that bobbins. Mrs. Toad is doing Sudoku and complaining about the 'wrong sort of paper'. I kid you not, it's just like British fucking Rail and their 'wrong type of snow', but she insists it's just for that reason that she can't solve them, not because they're too hard. Personally I find myself wondering if [...]
