If you can get past some political self-congratulation, The Speakeasy is an energetic, often observant record. Smoke or Fire make a sort of meat-and-potatoes pop-punk. That's not to say they're dull -- in fact, their debut Above This City is one of the great pop-punk albums in recent memory -- but you know what you're going to get. Buzz saw guitar, crashing drums, brash vocals -- it's all there. On The Speakeasy, it's there in pretty solid doses, too. These guys mix it up just enough, from the quiet-to-loud intensity of...

When did the news become entertainment? Right out of the gate this album, as it was designed to do, grabs hold of you and tells you there's no way you're not going to listen to this. It's too important. So sit down. No, wait. Stay standing. And raise your fist. Political punk. So content to live in your ignorance while they manipulate and tell you it's true. Don't think it's just FOX News with the spin and rhetoric. [...]

Smoke Or Fire's got a new album out now on Fat Wreck and it's a good 'un. The Speakeasy is the band's third full length (and first in three years) of fast-paced personal/political punk that's as edgy as it is catchy. It's powerful music that's meant to be played loud as kids sing and shout along with every word that comes off of singer/guitarist Joe McMahon's lips. Still, I'm not 17 years old anymore and with each passing year I'm worried that music like this won't affect me like it used to. Luckily [...]

I'm a little worried. Usually with Smoke or Fire, anytime they have an album, it's always a grower for me, and then usually after feeling lukewarm about it for a few months, I come to completely love it and have it be one of my favorite albums (this is true for both "Above The City" and "What Separates Us All").With their latest November 9th release "The Speakeasy", I fell in love with it

Richmond, Virginia's Smoke or Fire seemingly have everything they need to breakout big. They're signed to an influential, well-respected label ( Fat Wreck Chords ). They write compact, emotionally-charged punk anthems driven by boisterous guitars and gigantic choruses. But, more importantly, gravel-throated frontman Joe McMahon sings with the same kind of raw, naked honesty and instinctive sense of melody that have made other band leaders such as Chuck Ragan and Greg Gaffin punk icons. One listen to "Integrity" and it's massive shout-along hooks or the streamlined pop accessibility of "Neon Light" or the urgent yet introspective beauty of [...]
This show saved my life. For reals. Last night, on a last minute whim I headed out to North Philly's dive "The Fire" to catch my favorite Boston turned Richmond band Smoke or Fire. The place had about 40 or 50 people in there watching it, and it made for quite an intimate show.Mayflower:I got there a little late and missed some of their set, but the part I saw was pretty damn awesome.

Smoke or Fire, Cobra Skulls, and The Flatliners - Live at Generation Records on 10/23 @ 2 pm
For some time now, Smoke Or Fire has been one of my favorite bands. But it hasn't always been like that, as the majority of their material tend to be a grower for me. Take Above The City for example: I owned the album back when it came out in 2005, and while I listened to it relatively regularly, I didn't really warm up to the album for a good year or two. Same story goes for This
Filed under: Concerts and Tours It's been a few years since Richmond, Va.'s Smoke or Fire released their second album for Fat Wreck Chords, 2007's 'This Sinking Ship.' But don't interpret the gap between 'This Sinking Ship' and their next album as a sign that Smoke or Fire are resting on their laurels; they've been madly touring on the other side of the world, and have plans to release a new 7" called 'Prehistoric Knife Fight' in the very near future. Smoke or Fire frontman and guitarist Joe McMahon spoke with [...]
Wow! Has it really been over two months since I've posted on of these? I guess it has... I won't make that mistake again. Another thing I don't think I ever mentioned is that when I was in Allister, we played with the Wunder Years in (I think) Colorado Springs to about six people, but that was something like ten years ago. Still, their song below is great. Enjoy. MP3 The Queers - Definitely from the 1995 album Move Back Home [...]

Smoke Or Fire "Prehistoric Knife Fight" 7" Mar 16 Smoke Or Fire are releasing a 7" titled " Prehistoric Knife Fight " on March 16th via Fat Wreck Chords, featuring two brand new tracks. Their guitarist Jeremy reported: "So, on January 13th we headed into Sound of Music studios in Richmond, VA with our friend and engineer Casey Martin, to record two songs for our upcoming 7". The record will be titled Prehistoric Knife Fight and will be [...]

And don't forget to check back in the upcoming weeks for interviews with The Gaslight Anthem, None More Black, The Casting Out and Against Me! Wow, I don't know what's been going on lately, but I've been suffering from insomnia like crazy. I think it has to do with the cold weather, getting darker earlier, and the fact that I haven't been outside to exercise since it's cold and dark. Whiskey would probably help me pass out reaaaal quick, too bad I don't drink. So I guess that leaves me with one tried and true Housewives cure: make
I've read plenty of reviews online that say Smoke or Fire's "This Sinking Ship" isn't as good as "Above The City", and isn't really anything to get excited about. I say: Fuck that. If I became completely obsessed when This Sinking Ship came out back in 2007, it would have made my number one album of the year. Maybe I'm missing something, or more accurate seeing something that other reviewers
Last night I was pretty damn bored, and actually watched the baseball game (really rare for me to do...like once every few years). Aaaaand... why not have some songs about my rare experience to kick off Monday morning? MP3: Smoke or Fire - Goodbye to Boston Mustard Plug - Ballpark Skank Buy: Smoke or Fire Mustard Plug
Figures. Two bands that I like are playing on the same day. I could either see Smoke or Fire, or Star Fucking Hipsters. On account I like Smoke or Fire better, and that Static Radio was also on the bill, I opted for Smoke or Fire. I think I made the right choice. First thing I noticed about the Fire (the unassuming dive in North Philly) was how god damn tiny the place was. Seriously. Put 50
Since 2005's Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line was released, followed by last year's parody, Walk Hard , the Johnny Cash homage overload has pretty much died down. However, praise of the late legend will resume with the Anchorless Records release of All Aboard: A Tribute To Johnny Cash on October 21st. Taglined by the label as "Punk/Indie Greats Honor The Man In Black," the album will offer renditions from the likes of The Bouncing Souls, The Dresden Dolls (Feat. Franz Nicolay Of The Hold Steady), The Gaslight Anthem, The Sainte [...]
