It's a pretty good-looking weekend of shows this time around, folks. Go out and see some bands and stuff, y'know? First, the shows we've already mentioned... Tonight, there's Delta Spirit and Na... . I'm not sure whether it is due to popular demand after last week's compilation, but here is a second '8s soul mix, with a third and final installment in the works. The first mix was an attempt to create a fairly representative cross-section of the genre. This mix is less self-conscious about that. What we have here, then, are some of my favourite soul tracks from that comparatively barren

The economy is making people act a fool , a BT staffer just saw an old guy get hit by a cab, and even though it's raining the falafel cart line is still really long. WTF. We need to be thankful for what we've got people - and that starts with appreciating your beats; particularly William DeVaughn's 1974 classic and its varied offspring. Massive Attack covered it in 1991 and Ludacris mangled it in 2004, but neither compares to the super-dubbed Lee "Scratch" Perry/Upsetters version or Yo La's thumping platitude of gratitude. [...]
Even growing up in Detroit, even having the Motown sound in my blood, I never thought much of Smokey Robinson. That opinion is being rehabilitated. Somehow an mp3 of his, "Cruisin,'" ended up on my iPod. That tune filled me to overflowing with happiness and lightingbolts of soul and I listened to it non-stop for days. Now that I'm doing some digging in old soul dumptsters, I've found some real

This song features quite possibly the best combo of rhythm section and line I have ever, ever heard. Tears of a Clown carries a lot of emotional weight for me, because it's one of the songs that I vividly remember dancing around the living room to with my dad. My dad was pretty into Motown and, when you're six years old, there's not much that's as fun as manipulating lyrics to Supremes songs and running wild in your house to the soundtrack of The Reverend Al Green. SOUL! Bonus, King of Motown, for your Pagliacci [...]

this smokey robinson classic has been covered many times, but this year two great indie folk acts have gotten in with their own versions. the first song that got me hooked on thao nguyen was the heartfelt "feet asleep", an acoustic song that got itself an updated production for its appearance in this year's we brave bee stings and all . that album, performed by thao and her band the get down stay down , was released earlier this year on cd, and later this august on lp, which is the version that features this cover. This post is the first in a multi-part tribute to great cover versions from any time and any place. I love when an artist takes a song made popular by another and redoes it, not in the same old way as the original version, but in a fresh, and new way; completely making it their own. I dedicate this series to those who are brave to take a great song of another, and put out their own unique version of it for all to hear, and judge against the original. On with the covers! You Really [...]
Smokey Robonson - Quiet Storm Further proof, if it were needed, that Motown was releasing great tunes well into the seventies. This was released in 1975, a few years after Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' final performance. Listening to this you can hear what prompted Martin Fry to pen the immortal lyrics to 'When Smokey Sings'. I love the organ and flute solos too. My copy of this is not in mint condition, so apologies for the crackles and pops. I like to think that it gives it character [...]

Serious though. The limitless excess that is available via internet world has forever altered my ability to be stimulated by conventional means... and i can't imagine it any other way. Here's some recent havoc that's been wrought. CocoRosie-Rainbow Warriors Kookiest dames in the game are back. More beautif harp melodia, more awesome lo fi sound effects, more "Daddy never let us out of the attic" and noticeably less "actually, we are just trust funded out our ass and we made an album while we were tripping balls one day" [...]

Smokey Robinson, Big Time OST (Tamla 1977) I've had this for a while now but I didn't recognize how hot it was until until I heard the title track on this great mix (which you can still grab for yerself if you navigate the abandoned underbrush of the ilx sandbox). This track starts out like typically slick disco-funk from '77 but the long breakdown has more in common with the stretched-out psychedelic soul of Norman Whitfield (see the Temptations below). Smokey Robinson - "Theme From Big Time" [...]
It's the seventh or eight biggest highlight of the music year today, as the Q Awards are handed out to anyone who'll turn up ("honoured guests") at the big show. What is rather nice is one of the awards that is a foregone conclusion - one of Q's many recognising staying power and luxurious back catalogue sales - is going to Smokey Robinson . Of course, if they also give a prize to Lily Allen it might undermine the value of the award, but it's nice to see someone from outside the usual small rotating army of [...]
There they are, in all their campy glory. Three winners, three honorable mentions. Congrats to Scott Williams (no not you, Skunt) who won the J.Dilla package, Greg Scott, the winner of the OBEY print, Rising" "Quiet Storm" - Smokey Robinson used in "Breakadawn" Thanks again to everyone that entered the contest, as well as Antimc for providing many of today's tracks.
