(Ed. Note: I'm reposting this with updated information, so if it looks like you've read this, you have - but now you can go buy the record) I'm so sick and tired of all the bullshit, aren't you? I am so tired of being force-fed the idea that clowning on a style that you used to do is supposed to be clever and cool. Weezer's completely over-hyped and under-delivering 2008 release, aka the Red Album, is getting one mention in this column and one only: every time you see another article [...]

Altpress.net has an interview with Josh Caterer of the Smoking Popes. They talk about faith, musical comparisons and getting the Popes back together. By the way the Smoking Popes have a new album out called Stay Down which you can buy at Amazon or itunes

First, a note: please excuse my tardiness. I've neglected my blogging duties of late for no reasons other than general laziness and the love-hate relationship my laptop and I share. And Disneyland. Sorry. I've discovered a lot of bands when they opened for a band that I loved. Last Saturday at the Knitting Factory, however, I discovered a headlining band that a band I love opened for. Well that's not entirely true, as I knew about the Smoking Popes going in. What I knew is that they were a decent post-punk-type band [...]

It's been nearly a decade since Josh Caterer broke up his landmark band The Smoking Popes to pursue his love of Christ (ironic, we know). There was a brief solo foray into gospel and an almost-return to form with the enjoyable " Volume & Density " from Duvall . But Halle-fucking-lujah and praise the Lord, Chicago's favorite sons are back with a new record called "Stay Down." And already debate is raging... It's been nearly a decade since Josh Caterer broke up his [...]
I don't even know where to start here. Let's see... the Smoking Popes have a brilliant new album called Stay Down . It is an album I never thought would be made. I saw the band's "last" show at Metro back in 1998 so, for fans like me, a new album of new material now in 2008 is all gravy. Actually it is better than gravy; it's like having your (birthday) cake and being able to eat it too. So yes, the Smoking Popes are back and not a [...]

I love holidays that change the day of the week year to year. Having the 4th fall on a Friday, creates one huge weekend that starts Thursday and doesn't end until you stop partying on Sunday. Some may head to the beach (like me) and suffer through some crappy cover bands all weekend. Even though Philly is the city where our independence was declared, the pickings for a good show are light, but our nation's capital is happening, and there are a few shows elsewhere. So put down the fireworks and head to a show. Kicking it all [...]

i love the smoking popes. i really, really do. with that said, i was really apprehensive about their new one, stay down . really for no other reason than the fact they've been away for a while now. the party's over was released in 03, but it was actually recorded in like 97/98. so, i dont think my fear was unfounded but maybe misguided. as it turns out, and really no surprise, stay down is pure pop/punk bliss. welcome to janesville no more smiles [...]

I'm so sick and tired of all the bullshit, aren't you? I am so tired of being force-fed the idea that clowning on a style that you used to do is supposed to be clever and cool. Weezer's completely over-hyped and under-delivering 2008 release, aka the Red Album, is getting one mention in this column and one only: every time you see another article hyping Weezer, remember that there's a conspiracy out there of people trying to steal a piece of your soul. With all due deference to Weezer (a band whom I have [...]

i know i have an eclectic weird taste in dance music, mainly because dancing for me means jumping around the room flailing my arms any which way and my body wriggling in ways i didn't even know possible. hehe. so... these are the songs that make me go that way. nice day - the salteens the salteens is a pop band from canada, and this song is from their let go of your bad days album, which you can buy here . whenever i [...]
H appy Valentine's Day everyone. This sould have gone up at 7:00AM this morning, but was delayed due to technical issues with my inability to FTP. Anyhow, today spend time with those you love. Don't worry about expensive roses, diamond rings, and all that fancy stuff. In the end, none of that matters. Tell those you really care about exactly how you feel. Oh, and every song titled "Valentine" below is distinctly different from one another. This one is for my Grandfather , we miss you. MP3 [...]

N ot only is today Halloween, it is also my beautiful wife Amy's thirtieth (30th) birthday. That's a milestone that means, "Damn we are gettin' old!" At least I have a year to go. Anyhow, since I already had this post basically done prior to the death of my computer, all I have to do is hit the "publish" button and I'm done. Lucky me. Sometimes a little planning is a good thing. Anyhow, here are thirty songs for thirty years. All specifically for my wife and all with some [...]
S o I dusted off the old turntable and ripped the excellent (well at least the A side is good) Smoking Popes/Groovy Love Vibes split 7" from way back in 1993. I've always loved "Hang" as well as the cover of "Leather And Lace" but thought it interesting that neither song was included on the 1991-1998 CD. Supposedly Smoking Popes have a new record due out in early 2008. You can listen to a few of the new songs on the band's Myspace page. MP3 | [...]

I'm not sure that I ever mentioned how great it was to ring in 2007 while watching the Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio at Metro . Well it was. I only bring it up now because I finally got around to ripping the songs from the limited edition split 7" we got for attending the show. The above picture was one of only a few that my wife was able to take before Metro security confiscated her camera for the duration of the show. Bummer, but at least we got the 7". It [...]

Well August is slowly coming to an end. Things start to really pick up after Labor Day, but this week has some decent offerings. The week begins on Tuesday with locals Blonde Hair Blue Eyes at Full Moon Saloon in Fell's. The Ottobar has a solid week that includes Chicago's Smoking Popes on Wednesday [...]
