![[Listen/Download] Smothered in Hugs- Blank Test](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3407163_lg.jpg)
by teepoo I'm actually not sure if Smothered in Hugs still exist or I think they are now known as English Words according to their Myspace. I was trying to find some artists in other provinces to fill up more of our Prince Edwards Island listing on our Featured Canadian Artists list. I came across these guys because their track was randomly playing on CBC Radio 3. Blank Test comes off the 2009 album The Healing Power of Injury . Take [...]
EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKYWe've got a live track from our favorite instrumental band, Explosions in the Sky, and boy am I pumped about it. There is something about the way this band plays that is poetic. You really don't need words to feel what they are feeling. It's legit (trying to rid that word from my vocab, sorry).. but this one is called "Postcards from 1952." Also, the soundcloud version is a

Hey folks, sorry there has been (and will be) a bit of downtime around these parts- Ben and I have both been consumed by work as of late, and bloggin' has taken the backseat. Because I couldn't let the mess of excellent Record Store Day releases pass by without a mention, I decided to compile a list of some of my favorites. Dig in, and snag some of these while you're still able. The Flaming Lips — Smothered In Hugs (Guided by Voices cover) [ mp3 ] I know what [...]
I've been a big fan of a few up and coming East Coast bands such as Mardeen , The Danks , Two Hours Traffic , and Smothered in Hugs . While living with the music and watching what the bands were up to, I would find more and more great music. Well, a fine lad from THT and The Danks has now turned me on to another EC gem, Boxer The Horse . [...]

good day, denizens of the interwebs. one record i keep going back to for no good reason other than it rocks is smothered in hugs' the healing power of injury . see this post right here to get an idea what they're all about, or just listen to the two tracks below, or just know they're named after a gbv song, reference pavement in a song, and they're canadian - which im still up in the air about. two out of three awesome things aint bad. sleeper record of the year thus far.... Charlottetown based group Smothered in Hugs will be releasing their album The Healing Power of Injury to the public on February 10, 2009. Advanced copies have been circulating through the Bands' sphere since June 2008 to rave reviews. The band has been very busy since last fall, touring with Toronto based band, Holy Fuck, as well as being showcased at NXNE, POPMontreal and the Halifax Pop Explosion. Fans of early years REM and the Replacements, as well as those of you looking for a balanced and tight sounding band, this album will not disappoint. [...]

Smothered In Hugs / The Healing Power Of Injury ( Collagen Rock ) Though their name - one of the more obvious Guided By Voices cribs out there - certainly gives an idea of what to expect from the debut from this Prince Edward Island quintet, it doesn't tell the whole story. Yes, there's a pronounced affection for the oddball, rapid-fire pop aesthetic of Dayton's finest, but an almost equally large debt is owed to the early works of R.E.M., particularly in their penchant [...]

If you happen to have a desire to constantly hear/write about new music, one of the more reliable resources has to be recommendations from artists themselves. Now granted, if someone named Larry is referring us to a group fronted by his brother Darryl and his other brother Darryl (word to Newhart ), well then we take that with a grain of salt. But if a couple of bands you enjoy point you towards the same group, chances are you're on to something. This is how we first became aware of the five-piece PEI powerhouse known [...]
morning all. i think you gotta have some big balls to name a band, website, etc after a guided by voices song. cause afterall they are my sacred cow, and any soiling of their good name will not be tolerated on my watch. luckily, and i repeat luckily, the men of smothered in hugs have not commited such a crime. in fact, their yet to be released the healing power of injury is pretty damn awesome. as you all probably know, i am a sucker for anything that sounds like it came from the 90's, or anything from 91-95 [...]
"Blank Test" - Smothered In Hugs So listen to that opening melody (beginning at 0:15), remove the primal drumbeat, and think about what this sounds like: it's not merely based on the standard I-IV-V chord progression , but it's rooted in an early-rock setting of that progression--three successive ascending notes, each a whole interval apart, each accompanied, in order, by one of those I-IV-V chords. The verse of the hugely popular and evocative song "All I Have To Do Is Dream" uses this exact pattern, in a swaying, Everly Brothers soundscape, but [...]

Fans of Bloc Party, Bravery, and the like should get their hands on Smothered in Hugs ' new album, "The Healing Power of Injury." It's marked by an irrepressibly, relentlessly happy rhythm section, strong pop vocals, and sharp and tight hooks. "Visa Problems" is easily as good a pop song as anything I've heard in the power pop genre, with its infectious, seamless movements from chorus-to-verse. I can't image how this song can be performed live—vocalist Ryan Crane never seems to take a breath. And this is not [...]

The Superfantastics are a Halifax, Nova Scotia indie pop duo who have been around for a few years now. I reviewed their material a few years back when I first heard them. Matthew MacDonald and Stephanie d'Entremont make up the band whose video for their track 'Tonight Tonite' was nominated for video of the year at the ECMAs 2008! Matthew gave us his picks for his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? [...]

Smothered in Hugs is a Charlottetown, P.E.I. band who formed in 2005, getting their name from a Guided by Voices song. The band is releasing their first full length album titled The Healing Power Of Injury in February of this year. Ryan Crane from the band recently took time from his busy holiday schedule to respond to our questions about his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? Ryan Crane: Oracular Spectacular - MGMT. MGMT remind me of early Beck. [...]

School of Seven Bells - "Face to Face on High Places" . Fly to Greenland in a twin-engine plane, your pockets filled with Jolly Ranchers and freshwater pearls. Set down on a flat of snow, like the back of some vast arctic hare. Leave the propeller going & dig. Put your back into it. Yes, the Northern Lights seethe, yes there's much to explore in Nuuk & Kangerlussuaq. But dig. After two long winters it's time to dig. The airplane's roaring beside you, the sky teeming above you, the sting of sweat in your eyes. But sooner or later you'll [...]

It's a weird time to be hanging around the music scene on the East Coast. Over the years great bands have come and gone, but not since the whole "new Seattle" days has so much quality music been made here. I come from a scene where "slap bass" and "drop D" were very much accepctable terms, so this all still kind of freaks me out. Lately, I have been listening to two bands from PEI a lot. There is a bizarre scene going on there. Groups like Mardeen and Smothered In Hugs are turning out a brand of [...]
