Snailhouse 's new single is aptly named. It's called "Sentimental Gentleman" and it comes from the album of the same title. It's a sad sack country ballad that's laden with weeping pedal steel and sleepy guitar licks. Remember when I used to review albums for Discorder ? No, of course you don't. I wrote about Snailhouse's Lies on the Prize way back in 2009, and I just found this issue online right here . Memories. Thanks to Herohill for alerting [...]

(photo: Anneke Hymmen) I don't know about you, but this weekend couldn't get here fast enough, but now that it's on the doorstep, I'm realizing that I'll probably be busier in the next two days than I've been the past five. I'll be taking a few precious moments to get of the merry-go-round and decompress with some new tunes, and at the top of the list is "Sentimental Gentleman", the title track from Snailhouse 's new LP, schedule for release in May. Snailhouse is the name Mike Feuerstack of [...]

Hell yes. The first peak at the new Snailhouse record. Listen to "Sentimental Gentleman" now. MP3:: Snailhouse - Sentimental Gentleman WEB:: http://www.snailhousemusic.com /
Julie Fader Don't know what to do with yourself tonight? Well how about a triple shot of Toronto indie favorites at the El Mocambo. The line-up sees Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, By Divine Right, but you knew that already) hit the stage at 9:30, the aurally stunning Julie Fader at 10:30, and Montreal's Snailhouse at 11:30. De laatste, Lies on the Prize, is alweer twee jaar oud.

It was an insane May 1, 2010. One of a few shows that I attended in Ottawa. First stop was Zaphod Beeblebrox. It was a day festival called May Whee! The acts that played were Sunparlour Players , Snailhouse , Rolf Klausener , Leif Vollebekk and That's The Spirit . The only act I manage to see were: Leif Vollebekk That's The Spirit [...]

Doron Gild There's a lot of New York in Eyelid Movies , the debut album from the duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel known as Phantogram , and while the pair do indeed have Empire State license plates on their cars, they don't hail from a Brooklyn bedsit or East Village walk-up, but the town of Greenwich way upstate - as close to Montreal as it is to Manhattan. But you couldn't tell that from just listening to the record - Its synthetic dream-pop owes a lot to bands [...]

Just two more days until the announcement of the shortlist . In which case, you can expect more backlash haha. Here's my third installment of quickfire reviews of mp3s by the artists of the Polaris Music Prize Longlist . Here are: Part 1 and Part 2 . Snailhouse - Lies on The Prize Dollar Signs by Snailhouse Rating: 3.5 out of 5 I've been incredibly harsh when rating acoustic artists. The song is decent though just not that into it. [...]

I'm not sure being on the Polaris long list is going to necessarily vault Mike Feuerstack a.k.a. Snailhouse into super-stardom (I understand to be a super-star now you have to appear on reality TV), but, for what its worth, it gave me another reminder that Lies on the Prize was on my "to check out" list. He appeared on the Hibiscus & Rosehips Charity Album (Pick of the Week #15) , and "Who We Are" was def. one of my favourite tracks that appeared on that compilation. For an album [...]

Last week I was going to post about my predictions for what will end up on the Polaris Music Prize Long List this year, and I'm glad I didn't. With hindsight, after seeing the long list, I realized that there's a lot I couldn't possibly account for when 190 judges are having their say, and only a handful regularly contribute to the online discussion group set up for us. It's a pretty diverse list, more so than last year's, which should make choosing the 10 that will end up on the short list that much more [...]

Here we are folks: I've finally gotten off my festively-enlarged ass (seriously, between Mom's holiday treats and Dad's beer I gained about 8 pounds) and finished my top albums of 2008. As per usual, these are all Canadian releases, as that's where the ground is closest to my ears. Here they are roughly arranged in descending order (very roughly): The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger (Forward Music Group) I was a huge supporter of The Olympic Symphonium 's 2007 debut, [...]
