Attended the great TransModern festival this past weekend and was fortunate to be able to catch The Snails (amongst other great performances), made up of members of Future Islands, Nuclear Power Pants, Small Sur, Drew Swinburne, Wing Dam, and The Dave Fell Band. Wearing multi-patterned snail hats and telling one-liner snail Jokes, the band put on a great ska'ish set and I am really looking forward to hearing a full album of theirs. Call On Me [single] by The Snails

In the wild subsubculture of Baltimore's music scene, many alternate projects and side bands emerge. Future Islands, a known synthpop staple among Baltimorians, has branched off before to create the slimy hat-wearing rebrand called The Snails, and in keeping with the nature of the muddy molluscs, only played ten shows and then disappeared. It seems that The Snails have finally come out to play with the upcoming release of their debut EP, Worth the Wait, on Friends Records. The cover is a col...

I'm walking on sunshine! I slept through the night and for the second day in a row no mice graced my trap which will now be moved into the eaves to see if there are any left hiding from me, but I'm thinking no more midnight mouse runs for Gracie and me. I'm sure she'll be disappointed. In the Globe this morning was an article about the US becoming a nation of the perpetually impatient. People under 35 lead connected lives with"...a need for instant gratification." Researchers found people can't wait more than a few seconds for a [...]

Grab your bong, turn on the black light. Gather the boys. We got some riffmania for you. Monobrow - Bennington Triangle Blues My bias: I'm not a real fan of instrumental rock. I tend to cling to melodies and hooks, and those are usually conveyed in lyrics, not musical passages. I'm even less a fan of instrumental doom/stoner because the plodding nature of doom riffs gets real repetitive without the singing. [...]
I apologize for the delay with this weeks dojo, but we're coming at you with so many huge hits this week that i'm sure it will make up for it. Jumping right into it, Team Bayside High takes on the task of remixing a truly classic dance hit, "Make You Sweat" better known as "Everybody Dance Now". They do all the right things to this remix, with several different trap builds and drops, emphasizing the famous lyrics or their own take on the melody. Next up is the masked man himself, UZ , remixing Birdy Nam Nam . You may have seen [...]

For some reason, I'd been avoiding buying this album, despite finding it in my dollar bin dives nearly every week. See, when I was a neophyte dumpster diver, back in high school, this album was already a regular flip in the bins on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. Since Snail were a local band (sort of, they're from Santa Cruz which is loosely a part of the SF Bay Area) they've always been around the local record shops. And Cream Records was notoriously awful at promoting rock bands, like Legs Diamond, that really should've hit a bigger audience. [...]
This week we're coming at you with a huge list of trap bangers to get you through the week. Kicking things off are a couple new names to the dojo, Austin Maddox and Power Strangers with undoubtedly the best use of the "Damn Son" sample that I've heard. After this huge track, i'm sure it won't be the last time these guys will be on the list. HeRobust comes up next with the dubby track "OG Status" from his new EP of the same name, showing some great sampling work, using Big Boi and some classic jazz vocals. Next up [...]

Our man Meaux Green is back at it again! Feeling seasonal himself he throws out a Christmas freebie for all of us who had BASS on our Christmas lists. To keep us jolly, he gives us not one, but three saucy bootlegs including one in particular that takes a revolutionary look at BPM. Mixing in some of the most hood with some of the true veteran producers, Meaux takes us through some of his personal selection and provides a little taste of what a live show might sound like. Having said that, it isn't often that [...]
This week has been absolutely massive for Trap music! I won't bother to tell you about how Trap is conquering and infiltrating all forms of EDM, because, if you have been paying attention over the past couple of months I'm sure you already know (and if you didn't know that, we welcome you to the wonderful world of the Dirty South). First up Wick-It The Instigator throws some classic dub sounds before switching it back to a straight-up "Dirty South Gangsta" beat. Next is a kid you definitely need to be familiar with because he is blowing up in a [...]
If you still haven't heard, Trap music is absolutely taking over the EDM scene, with producers from all over the world and from different Genres tackling the dirty south sound of Trap. Meyhem & Antiserum kick off this week with an absolute banger that definitely deserves the title of "Anthem". Ian Boom slaughters it with Own Supply Hi, a huge track to be sure. Next, Bleep Bloop produces some of the deepest bass on the list; play this one on the loudest system you can find because it will definitely shake your foundations. Le1f, one of the first openly gay rappers lays [...]
Just another one of your run of the mill videos featuring a singer doing her thing while an octopus comfortably hangs out on her head. They also had to add the now terribly cliché shots we've all seen thousands of times where she sings in Paris as giant octopus and snail monsters casually wreak havoc in the background. "Every Single Night" was directed by Joseph Cahill and is off Fiona Apples ridiculously long named album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More [...]

Snails is Bristolian Dan Weltman (who also plays acoustic blues under the name 'Hollowbody'), who recruited vocalist Mog Fry for this single of cinematic folksong – one moment, ‘She’d Like An Hour’ could be soundtracking the Wicker Man, the next moment it’s more suited to Midnight Cowboy. There’s a real sense of glorious ennui as it floats along on chamber-pop arrangements and a gorgeous Francoise Hardy singing style. ‘Daylight Ends’ on the other side is an acoustic, folk-poppy, pretty duet, making this single one to embrace fondly.

A sizzling slice of Acid house for you to wrap round your eardrums today; Instra:Mental recently put out a split release on Martyn's 3024 label with Trevino, his side is pure 3am, hold on to your ribcage vibes. Check the full release at Boomkat . Instra:Mental- Pyramid

Being that my typical night consists of hitting the sack at around 10pm, and that my new radio show is Friday nights from 10pm to midnight, I figured that my second show would center around the theme of sleep . So I pieced together a playlist of bedroom pop, chill wave, dreamy shoegaze and what I've dubbed as psychedelic ambiance. I took over for Stuarto just after 10 with a brief description of my first track, which I don't believe made it on air. The switch-over was a bit rushed [...]
