Snowblink - Rut & Nuzzle Snowblink - Membrillo Daniela Gesundheit and a long, impressive list of collaborators (including MGMT, Au Revoir Simone, Timber Timbre, Scary Mansion, Angel Deradoorian, Patti Smith) have been putting out enough limited pressings of ornate sounds and souvenirs for the last few years to make Snowblink a heartwarming discovery. Last night I headed over to The Grad Club at Queen's University to check Arts & Crafts signee and critical darling Timber Timbre. Opening was local act Snowblink, a reverb-heavy guitar duo. The act worked without percussion because they were able to create really nice texture using only looped guitars and the lead singer's delicate, Feist-like voice. Timber Timbre's atmospheric blues was missing some of the instrumental flourishes that grace his album, but the accompaniment of a violinist and slide guitarist led to a bigger, broader sound than what is found on the CD, and the [...]
November 26th was a wonderful show be at the Black Sheep Inn. Playing there was Snowblink and Timber Timbre . Both acts I've seen more than once now this year. Also the show was being taped for CBC Radio which is very good for both acts to get their music out across Canada. The first act was Snowblink. Also great live and I've beginning to love their music. Which I finally bought Snowblink's Long Live. Music was very [...]
Frank Yang In my review of Yo La Tengo's latest Popular Songs , I lauded the New Jersey trio for their unbelievable ability to deliver excellent album after excellent album over their 25-year career, and having seen them five times before Saturday night's show at the Opera House, I felt comfortable thinking that same sense of consistency could be applied to their live shows. There'd be a handful of new songs, a brace of old standards and at least a couple unexpected surprises from deep in their catalog. [...]

This week Daytrotter.com posted the details of the upcoming Barnstorm Tour- to be called "Daytrotter Barnstormier II" and will start Thursday, October 8th in Milwaukee, WI and wrap up on Tuesday, October 13th in Johnston, IA. Via the @realdaytrotter twitter account and the weekly e-mails Sean Moeller (master of ceremonies, general cool guy) had been dribbling out details about the upcoming shows so very little of this is a surprise to those of us who watch Daytrotter goings on closely. This tour, which is apparently "Barnstormier" than the July shows, happens to [...]
When I started talking to Sean Moeller of Daytrotter.com (who signs his missives as "Mr. Daytrotter" amusingly) in May about his idea of "an RV Tour of Iowa Barns" I was both excited and a little worried, frankly. Sean said that he wanted to give something back to Iowa- his home state- in addition to raising the awareness of the "recording studio with a website" that is Daytrotter.com to its neighbors. Indeed, while music geeks like myself have been aware of the freely-downloadable mp3's of the recording sessions done in the Rock Island-based studio- [...]
Frank Yang When the Summerworks festival last year decided to incorporate a music program into its already-established showcase for independent theatre, it seemed an ambitious yet eminently logical way to introduce fans of one art to the other - see am up-and-coming play, stick around for a couple up-and-coming bands. Has it worked? One can only hope, though considering Thursday night's show was the first one I'd made it to either last year or this and I didn't come early for the play, I may not be the best sample group. The [...]
From Friday July 24th to Friday July 31st, I did the following things in order: - I interviewed Ben and Sean of the folk punk duo Andrew Jackson Jihad at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago. - I made my way to Dekalb, Illinois to sit down with one of the men who has shaped my musical upbringing, Tim Kasher of Cursive for an in depth one-on-one conversation that took place after a concert that might just be the best concert I've ever got the [...]
Our friends at Daytrotter are putting on a pretty great little event/tour/happening for some of you based in the Midwest. The first ever Daytrotter Barnstormer is set to kick off in two weeks. Six different Daytrotter alumni bands will be playing select barns and attics in eastern/central Iowa and out-of-state Midwestern city Madison, Wisconsin starting July 25th and running through July 29th. It's an idea inspired by old posters, featuring proof that the Dave Clark Five, Buddy Holly, [...]
Frank Yang If there's an advantage to writing about the same band for the third time in the span of a month, it's that rather than try and lay down some background, I can just point you here and here and voila - you're up to speed. If there's a disadvantage, it's completely running out of things to say. But I'll soldier on. Sunday night was the long-awaited album release party for Bruce Peninsula's debut A Mountain Is A Mouth and there [...]

Daytrotter Barnstormer Tour 2009 Rolls Through Iowa and Wisconsin
Daytrotter.com - the purveyor of freely-downloadable mp3's of sessions recorded by a wide-range of artists and bands- have decided that they want to take a handful of their favorite acts on a mini-tour through some Iowa towns with a stop in Madison (just because they love that place!). These shows are FREE and ALL AGES. All the bands are hoping for are some new fans, and possibly sell some merch. It is a move which gets its tradition from the "Caravan of Stars"-type tours that happened during the 50's and 60's where bands would roll through [...]

Snowblink
When I first stumbled across Snowblink, I couldn't help but wonder what the reasons behind the bizarre name might be. I figured it had to be something as deep and intricate as the complex, eerie, and stunning melodies the band creates. In the end, my attempts to over analyze the name were shot down after reading a little more into the woman behind Snowblink, Daniela Gesundheit. She explains that Snowblink, "is a plain old dictionary word, meaning: a white reflection in the sky of snow or ice on the ground. At first it was a lyric in a song, [...]

Nat Baldwin's Top Ten of 2008
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008. Nat Baldwin Extra Life - Secular Works Kurt Weisman - Spiritual Sci-Fi The Dead Science - Villainaire Skeletons - Money [...]

The New Humour Is Darkness
Swan Lake - "All Fires" In "The Kugelmass Episode", a short story by Woody Allen, the magician/entertainter The Great Persky transports Professor Kugelmass into the novel Madame Bovary. This is arranged at K.'s behest, because he is in a loveless second marriage, and is in the midst of a midlife crisis. He needs something, he thinks. Perhaps an affair with Flaubert's wanton cuckolder would do the trick, he thinks. So, K. and B. start doing it, and it's great - I mean, who among us can honestly say that we've never fantasized about 19th Century French Literary ACTION? But then [...]
