It's easy enough to overlook something when you have it right in front of you. To wit, Hacks and I were at the album release party last night for a local band, Snowden, that's been around since before Indie Rock was available by the bottle or bag at Urban Outfitters. And I'll admit-I almost didn't go. Being in Atlanta, it's seemed for a while like there's a Snowden show every day and a flyer for it stapled to every light pole. A lot of these songs have been toured and toured and played and played to [...]

Snowden, largely follows the evolution of Jeffares' post-collegiate home recordings in Athens and Atlanta. Hands clap and drums trip over flashy rhythms while guitars stutter through unique melodic progressions. The group's Jade Tree debut, Anti-Anti, expands studio credit to include some tracks engineered by Erik Wofford (The Black Angels, Explosions in the Sky, My Morning Jacket) as well as a few helmed solely by Jeffares. Although Snowden grew from a rather isolated situation and mood, ironically those same conditions are what continues to draw listeners in.You must hear this one! + Snowden - [...]

I've been a fan of Snowden ever since they released the track "Anti-Anti" last spring, and I've been highly anticipating the release of their debut LP by the same name. The band, who would best be described as post-shoegaze, hails from Athens, Georgia and is signed to Jade Tree Records. I was hooked by the band from listening to the echoing vocals, rich guitar line and amazing drum work of the song "Anti-Anti", and the rest of the album lives up to the high standard. Snowden's formula for a song is simple. [...]

Little start up band from Atlanta, GA., Snowden recently released their first label album with Jade Tree. Previously self release, Snowdens started as a college band in Athens. The jist of it: all pleasant, nothing radical, 80's sound. The usual suspect: Radiohead . It's a balance remix with slight touch of melancholia. Hip. Snowden is Chandler Rentz (Drums, Vocals), Corinne Lee (Bass, Keys, Vocals), David Payne (Guitar), Jordan Jeffares (Guitars, Keys, Vocals) Snowden : Anti-Anti , Anti-Anti (Jade [...]

Snowden - Black Eyes (Le Castle Vania Remix) It's an extremely rare event when a remix eclipses its source material. It doesn't happen that often. The average remix is usually derivative and unnecessary, or completely overblown. Worse still, some are just plain boring. When I download remixes, I usually expect the worst. I think a good remix should be celebrated. And that's why the disco perfection of Snowden's "Black Eyes (Le Castle Vania Remix)" has me dancing all around [...]

T here are so many things to be against these days, so many ways to be anti. Snowden takes it even further by giving us a way to be anti-anti. A one time bedroom project of Jorden Jeffares, Snowden is now a full band with an unmistakable, full sound. After a couple of years of live dates and sharing the stage with the likes of The Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Xiu [...]

Things are not always as they seem. Snowden's sophisticated sound comes from...wait for it, wait...Atlanta? Huh? Well, whatever. This album is fucking terrific and actually redeems one of my favorite labels, Jade Tree from what have been a slew of disappointments over the past few years. The label and promoters are claiming that they sound like (get this) New Order, The Cure, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs...No no nO! You guys are going about this all wrong...we don't want to hear more bands like these! Stop dumbing it down [...]
Seriously, I have to apologize. My inbox is sooo freaking backed up sometimes it's a little overwhelming. And I know there's all kinds of music lurking in there, it's just hard to go through, email by email, to sort out what's what (and actually attempt to keep up with correspondence too). SO, I'm going to do a little purge of my inbox right now, but it's all goodness, I promise: Spencer Dickinson - " That's a Drag " John Spencer (from Blues Explosion) teamed up with [...]

Riot Act Media is a promotions company that handles some very good to great indie acts. I just found this email in my inbox from Riot Act and it had this mixtape in it. So, what the hell, here it is... instant post. Enjoy the noise. Over brunch recently, my friend Barbara said to me: "Lately I just really want to go out and dance. I haven't done that in so long." On this same note, my intern Dan asked me to make him an "indie rock dance mix." I did, and he said he only liked half of it, but that's just how intern Dan is (you suck! hahaha). Anyways, here quickly are some fun dance tracks for your indie party, or to listen to at your desk at obnoxiously loud volumes like I [...]
Today we bring you the latest installment of what seems to be our exhaustive journey through the catalog of Jade Tree records. (Hey, there are a lot of great bands on this label!). Although only poised on the eve of their first Jade-Tree release, Georgia's Snowden has managed to build up pretty impressive live resume from their humble beginnings in Athens and Atlanta. The band initially started making the trek to New York to open for such indie hotlist bands such as Arcade Fire , Clap Your Hands Say Yeah , and [...]

The following tunes are for that every once in a while, when you come home from that dead end job and just need to throw something intraspective on whilst staring at the floor. Here goes.. [...]

Lately, I've been receiving e-mails from reps with mp3 attachments ; songs that they think I might be interested in, and I assume, would want to remark about here. I love that idea. I hope it prompts me do this type type typing think more more more more more more. The other day, DJ dj Dylan send me just such a note (which included "yes two djs don't ask haha") about his recent remix work as Le Castle Vania . New Jade Tree signee's, Snowden, just had their track [...]

So, it's just shy of a month away from the August 22nd release date of Snowden 's debut album Anti-Anti on the Jade Tree imprint and lots of exciting things are starting to happen. Most importantly, the remixes are slowly starting to come together. The first to be released is the Le Castle Vania Disco remix of "Black Eyes", a song actually inspired by countless Wednesday nights spent at Atlanta's MJQ Concourse . DJDJ Dylan recreated the song virtually track for track, giving all [...]

Little did I know in my struggling years as a young(ish) shoegazer back in the early 90s that one day bands would be labelled "post-shoegaze" as a badge of honor. Atlanta's Snowden have been given that tag, but there's oh so much more to them than just that. Pop and rock are equal parts, and they use a special technique that my friend Mike G taught me after our band broke up many years ago. I was complaining about the stuff I was doing on my own, and his wise advice was to throw on more reverb and more distortion. [...]

mp3 : Snowden - Anti-Anti [ Pre-order 'Anti-Anti' ] It's one of the most played tracks here on radio GBLK - Full of catchy, sweeping melodies and driving guitars flowing throughout, it was a no-brainer including it to be part of this little list we have running. Hailing from Atlanta, Snowden have been described as 'shoegazy', but perhaps they are going on a slight tangent here. And we like it. We like it a lot. --- [...]
