The Brooklyn quintet formed from a long bubbling friendship between bassist Jay Goodman, drummer Alex Beckmann, and lead singer/composer Grayson Sanders. Many parties, road trips, and treacherous leaky basements fraught with jam sessions later, they met guitarists Austin Mendenhall and Scott Seelig – two wayfarers from D.C. and Los Angeles. Snowmine recorded their debut LP, Laminate Pet Animal, over two days in the Summer of 2010 at Headgear Recordings with Dave Trumfio. After a month of mixing, they decided to scrap most of it, and spent the next three months re-tracking everything in a musky closet [...]

Snowmine is the Brooklyn quintet of Jay Goodman, Alex Beckmann, Grayson Sanders, Austin Mendenhall, and Calvin Pia. Together they mix elements of classic afrobeat, electro-acoustic textures, 20th Century Classical orchestrations, and memorable hooks. Their debut album, Laminate Pet Animal , arrived last year, and they've released a new single, "Saucer Eyes", to get you looking in their direction. Download Snowmine's single, "Saucer Eyes", below. We make no attempt to hide our love of Brooklyn band Snowmine and the sweet sounds they have been creating in their very brief career as a band. Hell, we gave them top billing on our year end songs list , and even became BFFs at this year's SXSW . All that aside, the guys just sent us this new tune "Saucer Eyes" and it causes us to ever grow our fandom of the group. Word is not out just yet on when we can expect a new album of material from the Brooklyn quintet, but [...]

Ladies and Gentlemen, The musical menu for The Deli's 3rd NYC B.E.A.F. (Best of Emerging Artists Fest) is right in front of you - check out the details here (links to band's music profiles are under the poster). This festival is linked to our latest year end Best of NYC Emerging Artists Poll , a contest influenced by many NYC scene makers, bloggers and venue promoters, and will be heavily promoted in our Spring 2012 printed issue of The Deli, which highlights all the bands in the "Best of 2012" list. The fest [...]

One of NYC's most interesting new "non-DIY" artists, Snowmine boasts a hypnotizing and beautifully delivered live show. The band gave us yet another proof of it on April 26, when they opened for WIM at Pianos. Their melodic, atmospheric compositions were complemented by a rare onstage energy and intensity, which allowed the band's sophisticated studio sound, made of layered background effects, swelling soundscapes and controlled distortion, to be recreated faithfully in the live setting. Lead singer Grayson Sanders' confident falsetto at times brought to mind Vampire Weekend Ezra Koenig's voice, covering an impressively wide range. The band will [...]

We've had many favorites come through Knox Road over the years, taking enormous pride (even if it's not ours to take) in seeing great results. So when Akudama, a highly-championed KR band, went on hiatus last year, it put a big fork in our hearts. The band had other projects (most notably, Snowmine), but even during their break, their commitment to the future of Akudama never waned. The guys just knew they needed some time away. And that time has passed. Say goodbye to the hiatus and hello to the wonderful new Akudama EP, set for official release [...]

I honestly thought by this time I would be physically and mentally exhausted from the past two days of non-stop music, walking, and BBQ pork. But I guess it was the sheer excitement from what this specific day had in store that kept me going. My feet were already starting to hurt though, despite bringing comfortable shoes. That's my major problem with this festival; people will tell you to wear comfortable shoes but you could be wearing those ugly Bare Foot Sports Shoes and by Thursday I can guarantee you'll be wishing you had a Segway to get you around [...]

Next Thursday and Saturday (Aprili 5th and 7th), the Deli-sponsored, second annual Brain Cave Festival will light up Brooklyn's Bell House by bringing the best and brightest of the borough's DIY scene to the stage for two nights of sonic and visual euphoria, showcasing 25 bands and live art by Peru Ana Ana Peru . Thursday night's lineup will feature mostly female-fronted bands – with indie pop, acoustic intrigue and fast-strummed rock from She Keeps Bees, Firehorse , Natureboy , Eula , Shilpa Ray and others. Saturday night sees Brooklyn's [...]

Snowmine is not necessarily a band I've had given the time of day to had it not been for the accompanying visuals from Shaking Through . This is one of those times when the almighty Powers That Be remind you of what an idiot you can be. The process, something typically totally foreign to a music writer, unless they've ventured out into production or the vast field of (attempting) to record label the shit out of some jams, and so to see it has it happens and to [...]

I was a happy kid. Sure, things could have gone a tiny bit smoother with sponsor issues and sound-guy car troubles early, but we pulled together like a community and put on an excellent day of music. Big thanks to all involved, my +1 for bartending early, the bands for helping each other out, whatever it took was whatever it took and the party felt like SxSW of old. So here are a bounty of pics from the 2nd St. Showdown ... Of Young Girls , [...]
Snowmine - Let Me In This is something me and my siblings worked on for way too long. That first project you don't know how to get started, and once you start, you don't know how to finish. The project you look back on as the beginning. This is our experiment. Brother behind the camera, sister in front, both of them behind the writing, and I, often on the side. Thanks to Snowmine for letting us use there amazing song. It fits quite nicely. Maybe not exactly what we had in mind, but [...]

I had my camera. I took almost 4,000 pictures. That seemed like a lot, but once I factored in the number of bands, the odd things that have to be documented, the friends gathering for shenanigans and the eight long days involved, it really wasn't surprising. I haven't done the final tally, but it would be fair to say that I saw part of a set from around seventy bands. It is my turn to give a rundown on bests and worsts of The Conference . The many highs were tempered by very [...]

Everyone has a love/hate relationship with SXSW. We're all so happy at the beginning of the week only to hate life come Monday. We here at ATH want to provide some recaps from our week of music and we'll be doing that with some personal reflections from each member of our staff. Follow the jump for more from me. Best Bands: Snowmine/Suckers/The Men. We saw Snowmine twice and both times their live sound was somehow even better than what they create in the studio. I've seen Suckers [...]

To those of you that came out to our SXSW party, The Beehive , thank you so much! For those that didn't, make sure you get your ass there next year. A very big thank you to all the bands that played as well as Bryan and Heidi over at Paper Garden Records . Photos of Jukebox the Ghost , Snowmine , American Royalty , Lucius , and more below. Photos by the lovely Lauren Keogh .

The hot mess that is SXSW is officially over, though the effects are still lingering, and may for some time. We're all different people here at ATH, so we wanted to offer you our varied opinions on the festival, so read on about my personal reflections on the fest... Best Bands: Snowmine / Bad Sports : Snowmine jammed it out at our party, and they just sounded beautiful. Their organic songwriting won everyone over, and I'm hoping the love spreads. Bad Sports rocked the Beerland patio in [...]
