Back for a second year with an expanded line up, there's little doubt that the Meteor Camden Crawl Dublin built on the promise of 2012 and delivered a fine weekend of music across fifteen venues. As with the original London event, many of the highlights were to be found in the smaller venues and it was also encouraging to see the Irish acts more than stack up against the international visitors. Such was the range and scope of the Crawl, that everyone's festival experience will probably be unique but here's what caught the eye of the State team... [...]

Feel not deprived of good Galwegian music thanks to David Boland of The Depravations... Indie popsters The Deprivations roll into Gulpd (Cork) on Thursday for a cosy acoustic show. Prior to that, songwriter and singer Mr. Boland let's rip a playlist of epic west Ireland proportions. The Depravations - 'Little Red Elvis' This is a list of Galway bands that you might enjoy or at least are worth knowing about, beginning with [...]

Photo by Drew Reynolds Spring forth everyone! Hopefully this week's snow was the last big one we'll get before the warmth returns, and god knows we could use it. Anyway, don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour on Saturday after you stumble home from one of the many great shows going on this weekend. We're talking My Gold Mask's album release party at Schubas, The Hideout's Annual SXSW Send-Off , So Cow at the Burlington and more. Buckle up... [...]

My wife bought me a copy of So Cow 's Meaningless Friendly when she saw them open for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists a few years back. I listened to it, and enjoyed it (most releases on Tic Tac Totally are pretty dandy). However, I didn't get a chance to see them until I went to CMJ back in October of last year. Dan from Inflated Records hooked me up with a copy of the split between the two Dublin acts, and I've been hoping that this year's South By Southwest music festival would bring [...]

Citóg see out the year with a crash bang wallop... A tasty triple threat-topped pudding will be served up piping hot in Galway's Cellar Bar tomorrow night as three of Ireland's finest talents play the final Citóg show before Christmas. Fellow Galwegians Dott (who appeared on the recent Xmas mixtape which can be streamed below) and So Cow will join Cork's favourite punk-folkies Trumpets of Jericho for a special edition of the weekly showcase [...]
Twelve Irish bands have been selected to play SXSW next March, many of whom have featured on this blog over the past few years. They are: Declan O’Rourke, Delorentos, Girls Names, Kid Karate, Kodaline, Kool Thing, Little Green Cars, Psycatron, Reid, Sea Pinks, So Cow and Squarehead. After the jump [Read more]
Few pop or punk bands have pulled off a successful split record quite like Squarehead and So Cow . Each band's off-kilter style has garnered them plenty of attention (even a recluse like Morrissey caught a Squarehead gig). But on Out of Season, these Emerald Isle outfits rose to the occasion: they transformed their sounds and produced a record that stands on its own. So Cow began as a solo project of lead singer/guitarist Brian Kelly, who expanded the band to include a bassist and drummer. The additions have transformed So Cow's sound from prickly pop ( [...]
Here's a video of Squarehead performing 'C'mon Man', the second track of theirs that we've heard from the split album with So Cow, which is being released on Inflated Records. Entitled Out of Season, it's released on vinyl and digital on November 13. That's next week!! 'C'mon Man' stick's pretty [Read more]

Ah, the Irish are making their way! When I first heard about this new song from Squarehead I immediately jumped out of my chair. I've been jamming to these guys for a long time; I've also been jamming to So Cow for forever. Why does this matter? The two have teamed up to make a ten song split LP titled Out of Season -it comes out on November 13th via Inflated Records . The Squarehead track is definitely the heavier the two, [...]
As premiered by Pitchfork (!!!) here's our first new taste of Squarehead since February. It's a big departure from their summery brand of 60s-tinged pop. There's a vicious bite to 'More Quickly' but it's all over in under two minutes. It's just a short reminder of how talented the trio [Read more]

I've gone high concept this week, and that is not a reference to this week's cover art which is by my friend Davie Kaufmann. No, I mean there's a gimmick: all the songs on Summer Fridays 4.10 are less than two minutes long. All 33 of them (maybe even 34). With this kind of criteria, we don't really have much in the way of new music (two songs by my count) but quality remains high of course. I've tried to vary it up as much as possible because the bulk of the two-minutes-or-less songs in my collection are of the [...]
Stream the entire Under the Covers Vol 2 tribute to Nerves album, which includes a song from Tuam's Brian Kelly.

amanda sutton Download Davila 666 "Hangin' On The Telephone" (from Under the Covers Vol. 2 out now on Volar/I Hate Rock 'n' Roll) Like most aging rock ‘n’ rollers in L.A., I’ve sang a Nerves cover onstage with a band at some point in my life, and I also hate young people. So I wasn’t exactly unbiased when I was loaned (not even given) the super-limited cassette version, hot off [...]

So, it turns out I neglected a GIMME TINNITUS Tradition. I didn't post my End of the Year Dump . Here is all the stuff I meant to get to last year but for some reason or another just didn’t get around to, sorry y'all. But you know what? It makes for a pretty awesome mixtape. Listen. Downloadables: resolution of one (mp3) by guards (d/l the GUARDS ep @ Bandcamp ) Halcyon Days (mp3) by So Cow [...]

Tweet Mixtape: Surveying the Indie Pop Renaissance (Podcast #241) We love psych rock, garage, folk rock, singer-songwriter stuff, and a variety of other musical genres here at The Bay Bridged, but our first love was, and will forever be, indie pop. From the jangly to the synthy, an uber-catchy, clever pop song is something to be treasured. After what felt like a few slightly lean years for the genre (from our perspective, anyway), we're now in the midst of a real fertile [...]
