"I too lived - Brooklyn, of ample hills, was mine." - Walt Whitman, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" By this point, it's an old story that Manhattan has lost much of its cultural capital to its neighbor across the East River. Nowadays, if you want cutting edge art, if you want to find clusters of musicians meeting at bars and coffee shops to talk shop, if you want to find the venues and neighborhoods that foster a multi-colored collaboration between the arts and across genres, cultures, ethnicities, and classes, you go to Brooklyn. Thirty years ago, you could say the [...]
So Percussion are an New York percussion quartet. You know the sort of thing: a little bit of jazz, a little bit of electronica, all served up in the name of contemporary classical music. July , written by member Jason Treuting, comes from their 2006 album Amid The Noise . It's an easy, loping bit of post-minimalism with glitchcore production, and the two contrast rather well. You'll like this. So Percussion - July (alternate download)

There are many blossoms of great beauty - many indeed. But they cannot compare with the beauty of the blossoms of blossom town, for these bossoms also have human feelings. - Sharebon. As the closing concert of the Kaufman Center's Ecstatic Music Festival – a series of concerts dedicated to the intersection of pop and classical worlds – drummer/percussionist/composer Bobby Previte has written five pieces for improvising soloists. Drawing from multiple pop genres, the versatile Previte has everything from the jazz keyboard fireworks of John Medeski to the turntable virtuosity of DJ Olive. Holding these five works together is So Percussion , one of the hottest groups playing contemporary music in the U.S. today. So Percussion seems to be everywhere this Spring. After a sold out show [...]

Dan Deacon concerts are infamous for their symbiotic band-audience relationship. Really, it's a Deacon-audience relationship. We've seen the pictures, watched the YouTube vids, or maybe even been lucky enough to participate in the sweaty throng, dancing ecstatically on the floor, packed in around the zany artist as he twiddles knobs and switches on a mess of day-glo wires, pedals, and circuit boards. So it must have been something of a novelty for the Baltimore-based artist to be standing on a stage last Thursday night, raised above the audience in the de rigeur manner of the [...]
I was extremely excited to see Dan Deacon and So Percussion collaborate this past Thursday at Merkin Hall as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival. The experience, all in all, was less than satisfactory. Without a doubt, the entire show recognized the genius of So Percussion, the experimental quartet (one member was replaced by a [...]
Classically trained quartet So Percussion collaborate with electro-God Dan Deacon tonight, headlining the Estatic Music Festival, which features 150 composers, songwriters, and performers re-defining contemporary music come together at Merkin Concert Hall at Julliard School of Music. This is the kind of collaboration that so very rarely bridges the gap between classical and contemporary music, [...]

My first reaction to the news that Matmos and So Percussion came together went a little something like this: "Huh." They're both known for their unconventional techniques; Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt (a.k.a. Matmos) put out a 2001 electronic album entitled A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure based around samples of surgical procedures, while NYC percussion quarter So Percussion's performances of pieces by the likes of Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, and John Cage often include anything hit-able, from traditional drums to aluminum pipes and flower pots. Heck, a press [...]

Four reviews. Two hundred words or less. No mercy. Let's do this. Sunglasses - s/t EP Savannah's Sunglasses is headed by a pair who go by the names 8000 Bam Bam and Baby Seal. If you're comfortable with such obvious affected whimsy, then Sunglasses might be right in your wheelhouse. They make a brand of sunny pop that feels as once slightly ironic and genuinely heartfelt. While their debut EP is padded with a couple throwaway tracks of field recordings, they manage to throw down [...]
This week, some dark, moody rock from the National and experimental electrorock from Holy Fuck . Brooklyn's the National have just released their fifth studio album, High Violet , and it's one of their most lush, colorful efforts to date. The additional instrumentation really brings the bleak attitude of this band to a new level. That combined with some tight drumming and baritone vocals, this record is a sure standout for this year. We've also got experimental electronics from the Books and Matmos; plus, [...]
What happens when you combine the experimental electronica of Matmos and the careful compositions of So Percussion in a live setting? An unbelievable show might be a good bet. Baltimore's (via San Francisco) Matmos and the Brooklyn percussion quartet are touring in June, supporting their debut collaboration Treasure State (out July 13th on Cantaloupe ; digital copy July 8th). The collaboration begins in New York City June 9th, crisscrossing the States through Chicago and Minneapolis before finishing up in the Pacific Northwest, with a final show in Portland [...]
The variety of percussive sounds on the record give a baroque a feel to Matmos' stylistically squiggling and formless warble

Matmos is an adventurously experimental electronic duo from California. They've been active for over ten years, and their discography explodes with finely-tuned sounds and compositions. In 2008, they released what I consider to be a real masterwork in synthesized music: Supreme Balloon . That album was a departure from Matmos' usual brand of sample-based music, but just as varied nonetheless. In June , Matmos will be back to sampling ceramic planters, pails of water, aluminum beer cans, and cans of [...]
by motormouth media (image by Julia Sverchuk ) We are pleased to announce the first tour dates for the debut collaboration of So Percussion and Matmos. Live you can expect expanded/deconstructed/chopped and screwed versions of the songs on the Treasure State record, as well as songs by So Percussion and songs from Matmos previous records. Also expect some top secret cover songs too (caveat: you have to come to the shows to find out which tunes). Each song will present a healthy blend [...]
