Toronto - It's been a month since English band The Horrors released Skying , their third full length release. After listening to it on a fairly consistent basis for the past few weeks, I can say that the album is freaking good and one of the better albums I have heard this year. It's invigorating to see a band like The Horrors transform themselves from a silly goth band known for being on the Mighty Boosh to a full blown rock act that has given us two exceptionally good albums in the past two years. The growth [...]

In 2006, the English band The Horrors were featured on the cover of Britain's prominent music magazine, NME, before they even released an album.

Amongst my minor claims to c-list celebrity stardom is that I used to go to school with Faris Badwan, frontman of The Horrors . I have no particularly interesting anecdotes except for the fact that he used to hang around the music department in drainpipe jeans and a dodgy haircut. But when there was chatter of him starting a genuine band, I piped up and paid attention. At first it was all about image but it seems that after two fairly lacklustre albums (unsuccessfully experimenting with punk, goth and metal) they’re found the magic formula on new release Skying [...]

Unfortunately this musical month was almost overshadowed by an unrelated event in which the often immoral British public expressed their extreme moral disgust at the actions of a few of their immoral members. Days were spent wondering whether it was more important that Rebekah Brooks looks like a media-mogul version of The Simpson’s Sideshow Bob or that she may have been editor of some newspaper at around the time that the whole voicemail listening thing happened. Just incase anyone was thinking of hacking it, you can listen to my voicemail anytime. It’s just my Mum asking where I am constantly. [...]

Later today the Mercury Prize shortlist for 2011 will be announced, and you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be followed by a million tweets from people saying stuff like "WTF!?!? [insert band] got nominated, but [insert band] didn't?." Rather than trying to guess who will get picked (or who had enough money to enter) we decided to put together a list of 12 British albums that we've enjoyed over the last 12 months. We don't care if they're big hitters such as PJ Harvey (who will probably be on the Mercury list) or smaller [...]
As far as I'm concerned, hallucinatory music videos got old in the 1970s . Much to my chagrin, renewed interest has surfaced in promos attempting to invoke the experience of mind-cracking trips on blotter acid. MGMT and Wavves are prominent culprits in the musically Learean trend. Unfortunately, The Horrors now belongs to this silly and annoying audiovisual revival. "Still Life", the video for the first track off their forthcoming Skying , amounts to little more than an ugly show of burned out colors and ghostly faces emerging on screen. We get to see Faris Badwan and [...]
