Crayon Fields - 'Mirror Ball' from Geoff O'Connor on Vimeo . All The Pleasures of the [...]

Remember Sodastream? No, no, come back, I'm not about to cue in a YouTube video of Jamie Theakston talking about Spangles and trying to "remember" the words to the Friends theme song. The band Sodastream? Evening Session-flavoured Australian relegation-zone indie pop? Well, Karl Smith out of Sodastream is back, back, back, doing a band called Lee Memorial. You can find out what they sound like - if you can't guess - with a download of Long Days In . The set-up for the band is actually more intriguing than "one half of Sodastream" would suggest; [...]
Lee Memorial – All These Things Terse, volatile rock with that grandiose sound The Walkmen are so good at. Sounds like it could shatter any moment in a cloud of bitterness and blue ruin. Lee Memorial are one of the more immediate bands to come out of Melbourne in recent times; it occasionally seems like you can link every musician from that city by six degrees of Kes, with the results often being songs that are obscure in the right ways but not necessarily that rewarding. Lee Memorial features a few well-known names, like [...]

Being sick sucks, and this cold of mine has gone on long enough! I've abstained from beer consumption nearly the whole week long, and that hurts almost as much as my lungs do (from the persistant cough). Anyhow, welcome to December. Here's a bunch of music, in no particular order, for your enjoyment. Tracklisting: Azure Ray - If You Fall The Charlatans - Oh! Vanity Chris Pierce & [...]

Two years. Two freaking years, people! I can't believe I've been at this for two whole years. That's longer than most gerbils live. Longer than a lot of marriages last. And it's a long, long time in the blogosphere. The best thing is that I haven't run out of things to talk about. I'm still really enjoying this. I hope you are, too. I'll make you a deal. I'll keep on doing it as long as it's fun and the music inspires me and I don't have to resort to posting porn [...]

Considering that Sodastream called it quits earlier this year, I'm a few months late with this post. However, who cares...they might be new to you. I stumbled across this Aussie pair about a year ago when I fell for their cover of "Southside of the World" on the Will Oldham tribute disc I Am A Cold Rock. I Am Dull Grass . It's dark and somber yet captivating, melodic and accessible. They sounded like some sort of a cross between Doveman and Belle & [...]

I couldn't find a photo of the band that was big enough, so I made this... I guess it works. Aside from maybe two or three other records, Even As We Speak 's Feral Pop Frenzy is one of my all -time favorite Sarah releases. It's basically flawless and so is the Peel Session they did on January 9, 1992. They played three tracks from Feral Pop Frenzy and one non-album track, "Stay With Me." The quality on this is fantastic and as far as I know this is the only [...]

German band The Sodastream (not to be confused with the Australian Sodastream) have released a free digital download album. It's the follow up to 2005's All The Things You Are and is simply titled RMX with eleven electronic versions of their previous work. The bands normal sound is very shoegaze indie pop with psychedelic elements and the remixes of tracks I am familiar with are very good indeed. The Sodastream - Bruxelles (Dr Burnzen Remix) The Sodastream - Waves Of Water (Clubkraft Remix) Non [...]
Via Skatterbrain, the sad news that Australian band Sodastream is calling it a day after 10 years. The duo of Karl Smith and Pete Cohen built up an impressive catalog of songs that are mostly elegaic in the best way - full of nostalgia and sorrow but never mawkish or sentimental. The most obvious distinguishing feature of the band was always Cohen's double bass, and the sound it of anchoring

Sodastream, you'll be missed. In a blog posted on their MySpace this past Sunday, Australia's Sodastream announced that they'll finally be calling it quits: "After 10 years, Sodastream are calling it a day. Throughout our five albums, four EPs, seven international tours and countless shows around Australia we have had the privilege of working with many incredible people, and have made a lot of great friends. We have also received amazing amounts of generosity and hospitality from people all over the world. It is those people we have [...]

The first gig of a new year always seems to be a low-key affair. Last year it was ¡Forward, Russia!'s in-store at Piccadilly Records and the year before we saw a little-known band called Editors play to 30 people at the Night & Day. Gig-going activities for 2007 were kicked off on Friday night at Kro Bar, opposite the University Union on Oxford Road, where Hey! Manchester and PopArt vs Industry had put together another excellent line-up to follow on from the Klondyke Club gigs of last November. We arrived just as Julian [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ...
Now that the Top 25 has been kicking around for a few days now I figured I'd post some thoughts as well as the bands that just missed the cut. Perhaps it was to be expected, but hip-hop was pretty absent from the list. The Herd did pretty well (51) but other than that hip-hop didn't really make much of an impact on the list. I'm not sure if this reflects the state of Australian hip-hop, or bloggers' taste. I have my suspicions. One of the great things about doing this list was [...]
