![[Listen/Watch] – New Album Teaser By 1, 2, 3 – "New Heaven"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3473609_lg.jpg)
Tweet You might've noticed that the site was down for a few days. One of the things that I was excited to post just before it went down was this new album teaser by my favourite new band, 1, 2, 3 . The reason I was so excited is because having heard this album I can assure you it's one of the most pleasant, diverse, harmonious, well-written catchy motherfuckers of the year. I'm officially excited for the official release and even though they're [...]
![[Listen/Download] – New Song By 1, 2, 3 – "Work"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3408620_lg.jpg)
Tweet Need I gush anymore about 1,2,3? No seriously, do I? I gladly will....... Ok, If I'd started the Ones To Watch section when I did my introduction piece on them these guys would be up there with the toppermost of the poppermost. I'll say it again, but keep it fairly short in case you've already heard this 16 times in the last month; 1, 2, 3 have some huge fucking potential to be one of breakout bands [...]

We've gone from one tiny island off the very North of England to a slightly larger island off the south coast. One wedding (my sister) and one birthday (happy birthday MM) later, we prepare to return to civilisation. The sun is shining and the sea is calm, and I wish we could stay longer. Anything feels possible here. But I've had trouble sleeping; my recurring anxiety dream has come knocking every single night, shouting in my sleep so loud I've woken the sprats. I can feel it way down, bubbling away but I've no idea what my subconscious [...]
![[Listen] – New Song By 1,2,3 – "Heat Lightnin'"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3312554_lg.jpg)
Awwww sheeeeeiiiittttt. Were you aware that 1,2,3 are my new favourite-not-so-new-but-still -haven't-released-an-album-yet band? Well you fucking should be, I've said it enough times in the last month . Signed to Frenchkiss Records the dudes have an album coming out in June called "New Heaven" and every song of theirs that I've heard has been wonderful. Some of the tunes moves your weary bones and some sooth them, and then there are some that just make you get down and dirty like a dirty little fucker getting down, down, down, down, down. This [...]
![[Introducing] – 1,2,3](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3282169_lg.jpg)
It's rare that you discover a band and within minutes of hearing one song you've already bought their entire discography on vinyl, but that's what happened to me with 1, 2, 3 . Granted that discography is only three 73 singles deep, but still, that's the effect they had on me. When Matt posted "Riding Coach" at the end of February I had never heard of the band, despite them having been around and releasing music for about a year, but after hearing that song I had to hear more and so I went on [...]
![[Watch] – 1,2,3 Perform "Confetti" For Green Screening](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3267493_lg.jpg)
Last week Matt posted 1,2,3 's latest song "Riding Coach" and in an email to me he expressed how damn good it was. I'd never heard of the band before, flying below my radar for a good year or more, but when I heard the song I realised just how fucking good it was. There's an Introduction piece on them coming in the next few days so I'll keep all of my best adjectives for that, but below there's a cool-as-mother-hubbarding-shit video they did for Green Screening where they perform in front of a green [...]

[Photo courtesy of Kevin Serra for Kevchino ] Our previous experiences with Soft Black had been more intimate experiences than this show at the massive Brooklyn Bowl - first there was the Gaza Benefit Show this summer, followed by their short but outstanding set at the NYCTaper Unoffiicial CMJ Show in October. As the band gets ready to release their new album The Witching Hour - the product of two full years of songwriting and playing - this set opening for Shilpa Ray and Her Happy [...]

Brooklyn psych/folk studs and PHW favorites Soft Black have just released a brand new 5-song EP of new material called We Scatter Light . The EP is the follow up to 2009's stunning The Earth Is Black , an album that regular readers of PHW no doubt know found its way to the upper reaches of my year-end list last December. That record's immediacy hasn't dimmed one bit in the time since (check the recently released shlock-horror video for the title track here ). According to lead-singer/songwriter/guitari st Vin Cacchione, [...]

Last night was an evening of promising bands and terrible photos. I almost wasn't going to bother posting these, but at least few of them are OK. Bruar Falls now has a red light shining on the stage, which is a lighting situation I am totally not equipped to deal with. Heck, they completely turned the lights off for Gray Goods, and I always find it incredibly awkward to take photos at under-attended shows. Not to say that the bands weren't good, just my photography skills. I arrived as Soft Black played, a band name I still absolutely [...]
Enjoy their superb performance of 'The Earth Is Black' in the feature below. MP3: Soft Black - I Am An Animal
Here are our favourite albums of 2009 - they might not be the best in the eyes of the wider world (for example, the charms of Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective have all just passed us by, couldn't see what the fuss was about at all), but these are the records over 2009 that we consistently returned to, and which are our personal favourites.Anyway, here we go...10 Wooden Wand -

Those of you out there who actually read this blog from time to time know that 2009 was a momentous year in my life. My wife gave birth to healthy, beautiful (if I do say so myself) twin girls back in February, and though there are a thousand things to worry about every day with children, my life has been on the proverbial 9th cloud ever since. One of the many wonderful things about them is that they are amazing sleepers - seriously, they're in bed at 7 every night and only on the rarest of [...]

Yes, I'm JUST getting caught up with CMJ right now as I'm sitting here watching the World Series (no, I'm not sure why I'm watching). Here are a few photos from the excellent After the Jump showcase that we held at the beautiful Brooklyn Bowl on Oct 24th. Seriously, if you have not been to Brooklyn Bowl yet, run don't walk. It's such a great space - you can tell the owners really took the time to get things right. Not only is there one of the most classy looking bowling alleys you'll ever [...]

I arrived just as local Brooklyn shoegazers Grooms (above) were taking the stage at Brooklyn Bowl for the After the Jump day party. Grooms are the type of band that make me glad to be a music lover living in New York City... they are talented songwriters, they put on a great live show, and right now they're our little secret here in Brooklyn. I had seen them a ways back when they were still called Muggabears, and I was curious to see how they had evolved since that earlier incarnation. [...]

This is was the end of CMJ09 for me, I split my time between Bruar Falls and Brooklyn Bowl . [Tweet] # #cmj09 :: heading to @bruarfalls :: my section of g train has regular service?? wow :: sweating... damn you mta, why is it so hot on this g? [Tweet] # #cmj09 :: I'm at @bruarfalls :: bloody marys are $5 not $3, boooo! :: what is that? it's not so much headbanging as it is headflopping [Note] the headflopping band is named belgua [Downloadable] Disco Show [...]

I took last night off. I fell asleep in front the newest It's Always Sunny at 10, awoke two hours later to zombie-walk into my bed, and just woke up again a few minutes ago. This CMJ business is a lot more tiring than I remember it being. I hope everyone rested up for today, because it's going to be great. It's your last chance to squeeze in all those bands you haven't managed to see yet. I will be running around like a chicken with its head cut off all day for sure. I'm combining today's posts [...]
