Some time ago I posted news that YepRoc would be reissuing the Soft Boys' 1980 classic album, Underwater Moonlight , on LP. At the time I passed along information in good faith that was provided by YepRoc via email that turned out to be inaccurate, and I feel a responsibility to set the record straight. At the time of my original post in November of 2010, the LP release had been delayed, and YepRoc passed along news from Robyn Hitchcock that explained the delay and described the recut version. After having purchased the LP, it [...]

Much of the nation, most especially the mid-west and the south, have been trapped under a dome of extreme heat for the past month or so, while the Northeast has been dipping in and out of excessive temperatures for weeks. Here in the west, we've had a mild summer with below average temperatures for most [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

It's like closing your eyes and letting yourself sink into a deep pool of ocean water mixed with stardust. At least that can be one of many reactions to Washed Out's Ernest Greene's debut full-length oeuvre as well-established chillwave staple. Washed Out started to gain notoriety in 2009 when music bloggers stumbled onto his myspace page. Having started to produce songs from equipment in his bedroom, he went on to release two EPs in '09 and perform at the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival. His music is reminiscent of snyth and funk bass-heavy sounds of '80s and '90s neopsycheldia, and chips [...]

Tweet The Soft Boys classic,"I Wanna Destroy You" off the 1980 album Underwater Moonlight is the kick in the ass you need this week. It's feel-good, but at the same time you kind want to smash a chair against the wall. The combination of the power-pop chorus and punk verses perfectly captures the spirit of youth rebellion, or freedom, or...I don't know... I'm gonna go grab a beer... The Soft Boys - "I Wanna Destroy You"
The Soft Boys — Insanely Jealous (1980) I've been on a huge Robyn Hitchcock kick lately (particularly his Soft Boys stuff), so I thought i'd post my favorite cut from Underwater Moonlight . Between the tense, jittery instrumentation and the razor-sharp lyrics, "Insanely Jealous" is damn hard to top. [ mp3 ]

The Soft Boys' two most influential and groundbreaking albums will be re-released via Yep Roc Records on November 15. Main man Robyn Hitchcock, along with demon guitarist Kimberley Rew, bassist Matthew Seligman and drummer Morris Windsor managed to craft some psychedelic pop masterpieces during their short life. We've got the chance for you to stream the album, and personal favourite, Underwater Moonlight , which perfectly showcases their wonky pop and killer riffs. Listening to it as part of this package, it's pretty much some of the best pop music I've heard this year. And it's 30 [...]

I have a couple items of news to report on The Soft Boys and Robyn Hitchcock reissues front. As many of you probably know, The Soft Boys' two proper albums A Can Of Bees and Underwater Moonlight have been reissued by Yep Roc. The CD versions of both are currently available for sale. I was a little disappointed to learn that all the bonus tracks for the two CDs are being made available only as lossy compressed (192 kps MP3) downloads. I understand making the bonus tracks download only, The Feelies did [...]

The Soft Boys – Underwater Moonlight Often cited as an album that launched a thousand others, somehow The Soft Boys' masterful swan song still seems to evade a majority of listeners. Despite being reissued several times in the last thirty years, the album remains more of a critic's darling and oft name-checked influence than an essential part of most listeners' collections. Recorded after yet another lineup change in Robyn Hitchcock's seminal group, the album proved to be the last they'd ever record under the name and yet its update of jangled [...]
The Soft Boys, "Underwater Moonlight"

The Soft Boys formed in 1976, dissolved in 1981, and reformed for a 21st anniversary tour and reunion album in 2001. Now, comes another round of reissues. The Soft Boys' Underwater Moonlight is being released in its 10-song original form by Yep Roc, on CD and 180 gram vinyl. The reissue features all the bonus tracks as digital downloads free with purchase. The vinyl release is the first ever reissue of the LP in its original form. 'Underwater Moonlight' has long been considered a classic record, "Big Star and us were the rickety bridge between the Byrds and [...]
A long out of print gem finally sees the light of day again.
Kimberley Rew waves hello!

Hola, amigos da musica. Time to put the old iPod in shuffle mode and see what surprises we´re gonna get this time around. It´ll be a Wild Weekend again, with yet another musical grab bag of goodies for your aural liberation. Because, as the Residents once rightly proclaimed, ´ignorance of your culture is not considered cool´. Right on. To start off this week´s edition, the ghost in the machine picked a cool song by the Soft Boys. Fun late-seventies punky glamrock psychedelica - or was that the other way around? [...]

Now that the Carolina Hurricanes have been eliminated from the NHL playoffs, Merge Records impresario Mac McCaughan has moved on from chronicling the 'Canes' efforts to talking about the music that arenas employ to get fans in prime freak-out mode. In 2006, he brought some albums put out by his label down to the Hurricane home base, RBC Center, in hopes of breaking through what he called its "particularly stultifying mix of Top 40 / Classic rock / Emo (? i don't know what to call some of the songs on there) / Sports Disco," and it worked, [...]
