Soft Reeds - Magic It helps that I have blog friends in Kansas City who constantly feed me great stuff being created in that town. This Ben Grimes -led project fits into the vibrant scene, swinging in the middle of the party on a trapeze of strong vocals and danceable beats with this follow up single to their 2010 debut Soft Reeds are Bastards LP. Get their 7" split with fellow Missourians Minden over on The Record Machine . Speaking of which, you gotta see their hilarious new sexy/kitchy vid for " Gold Standard [...]
Two Record Machine artists coming together on one wonderful piece of wax to show off new songs. Soft Reeds Born of a twelve-year labor of heartache and love, Soft Reeds is the brainchild of Ben Grimes (formerly of Astralwerks' The Golden Republic), a Chicago native whose roots grip firmly in the '77 Berlin sounds of Brian Eno, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, while embracing the richness of American indie rock. Originally started in 2007 as Grimes' post-TGR solo project, Soft Reeds became a full band in 2009, and released the critically acclaimed 'Soft Reeds are Bastards' in [...]
This gltich-hop track was actually released last October, but I heard it for the first time watching Torstein Horgmo's part in DC's This is Snowboarding the other day and really liked it. Thriftworks is an electro/dubstep/hip-hop producer out of Berkeley and still unsigned so support this guy by checking out his soundcloud (Riding Alone at Dawn is another real cool song on there). As nice as it is to finally have spring, still in a bit of denial about the season being fully over. Video part below for those who are interested. [...]
Soft Reeds started as solo project of Ben Grimes(formerly of Golden Republic) that has been transformed into a full band since 2009. Record Machine released the band's debut, Soft Reeds Are Bastards earlier this summer and Pitch.com called the disc a "daring, arresting rock record". Soft Reeds are in town for two shows later [...]

Here is the debut video from Soft Reeds. It was shot in one take over the course of 20 minutes and then sped up to be in time with the song. This Affair has been one of my favorite summer songs of the year and this video is a great summer video.
Nicole asked me the other night, "When people ask you where you're from, what do you say?" I usually say I'm from Regina. "But you're not from Regina, you grew up in Saskatoon." I started to get into "Well, okay, I had my childhood in Saskatoon, but I was a teenager in Regina, and that's really what it is to grow up, that's the crucible of youth..." But Nicole was just asking what I say when people ask. And people do ask. Nobody's from Vancouver. Somebody must [...]
This afternoon, thousands of music fans will make their way to Chicago's Union park for the sixth edition of Pitchfork Music Festival . As Consequence of Sound is partly based in Chicago, having a festival in our own backyard is a really big deal for us. Needless to say our coverage of the fest will be top notch! But for those of you who won't be able to make it to Pitchfork, our Friday Mixtape has arrived just in time to make sure everyone receives a little extra somethin' this weekend. [...]
When the rock band the Golden Republic broke up in 2006, some of its members went on to form the Republic Tigers, while others, like Ben Grimes, tried to figure out what to do next. The break up was not easy for Grimes, who told the Pitch, "After the Golden Republic broke up, I was burned. At the time, I was like, 'I'm done!'" Desperate for a fresh start, the next year Grimes and his wife moved

Soft Reeds released their debut record, Soft Reeds Are Bastards this morning and offer the expansive, "This Affair" for your preview pleasure. In one of the most candid and devastating lyrics of the year, singer, Ben Grimes notes, "I'm getting tired of this affair/and now you've gone and done that to your hair." Like the roots of most failed relationships, it is simple, crushing and detail heavy
We are proud to release the debut cd from our good friends Soft Reeds. Soft Reeds started as solo project of Ben Grimes(formerly of Golden Republic) that has been transformed into a full band since 2009. They are releasing their debut "Soft Reeds Are Bastards" on July 13th and we can't be more excited. Soft Reeds play an addictive brand of indie rock that finds itself to be intoxicating. "Soft Reeds are Bastards" masterfully walks a line between bitter and sneering without deviating to tiresome whinetunes. A surprisingly mature sound that still finds a way to keep in touch with [...]

I remember sometime in last year discussing Soft Reeds , the new project from former Golden Republic frontman Ben Grimes. He had some songs up on his MySpace, and now after spending the months of April and May recording them at home in Nashville, he wants you to hear what he has come up with. The oh-so-aptly titled Three Songs by Soft Reeds features two songs you might've heard before on the said MySpace [...]
