Secret Colours January is usually a stacked months for music in Chicago as we need something to take our minds off the frigid conditions and dying Christmas trees on the curb, and this beginning of 2011 is no different. From big names such as Weezer and Wu-Tang Clan to up-and-coming locals such as Secret Colours and Chaperone , this weekend has a little bit for everyone. Let's get to it, shall we? FRIDAY [...]

Florida natives Soft Targets aren't exactly new to the indie scene, but it's quite possible that they've slipped under your radar thus far, which is a shame. The three-piece group released their excellent sophomore album, Heavy Rainbow , near the end of last year, a followup to their 2005 debut, Frequent Flyer , which is also worth a listen. Their sound starts with a classic indie rock template and adds instrumental flourishes (strings, horns, keys) as needed to enhance frontman Jesse Corry's emotionally charged lyrics and distinctive tenor voice. It's a winning formula that [...]

SOFT TARGETS Heavy Rainbow (Cloud 13 Records) Soft Targets has garnered quite the national and regional attention after wrapping up its east coast tour to promote their newest album Heavy Rainbow. Soft Targets - The World Looks Bigger Now Soft Targets - Surrendering Slow Heavy Rainbow by Soft Targets is an indie-pop album, with obvious glam rock influences (David Bowie, Roxy Music) which can especially be heard in singer/guitarist, Jesse Corry's, vocals. His voice doesn't quite match up to David Bowie or Bryan Ferry, sounding almost too fragile at times, and he ends up sounding like he's imitating these singers at some points. The album does have some interesting guitar work, though, especially in songs like [...]

Soft Targets is a Tallahassee, Florida three-piece formed in January of 2004 by singer and guitarist Jesse Corry and assist/keyboardist Nathan Sadler. The two met at Florida State University's Music School, where Sadler was a student, and Corry was a songwriter looking for a quiet place to work. The band later added drummer Steven Gillespie of Tallahassee popsters The Ums to become today's Soft Targets. Displaying a rare combination of musical prowess and lyrical maturity, Soft Targets is best at doing what many of its contemporaries don't even attempt: writing memorable pop songs that engage genuine human feelings, [...]

In this edition: Kings of Leon , Bat for Lashes , The Faint , Houseguest , Jem , [...]

You sort of have to wonder what possessed them to name a gunship the U.S.S. Hunchback . Seriously. The U.S.S. Hunchback? That takes some of those proverbial balls to name a ship as such and not be concerned that people will believe it to be the gimp of the Navy. Or that it will have to leave combat during the evening to to ring the church bells in time for vespers. I guess sometimes it's just a question of doing your own thing instead of worrying what others are up to. It's [...]
