If you're familiar with Daytrotter.com , it is probably because of the extensive coverage of the independent rock, folk and Americana scene. Daytrotter has established itself as one of the premiere tastemakers in this space, contributing to breaking bands like Dawes, Bon Iver, Mountain Goats and Deer Tick by featuring early sessions of the groups. What you might not be familiar with is the impressive coverage of Hip Hop and Rap by Daytrotter. These sessions get lost in among the more visible or "buzzworthy" sessions by the Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird's and Timber Timbre's of the scene. [...]
MP3: Lateef the Truth Speaker ft. Del the Funkee Homosapian & the Grouch "Oakland"(Mocky Remix) Soleside's crew OG, and son of Black Panthers Lateef the Truth Speaker hooks up with Del and the Grouch to honor the city of Oakland. Seems the City of Dope is the home of Too Short, independent gang members who have not succumbed to the branding efforts of the Bloods & Crips, as well as political radicals and freaky dames with bread. [...]

I've been a long time fan of the Quannum collective, but never got into Shadow's work past Entroducing . Recently, someone over at DJShadow.com contacted me about featuring their new remix project - a compilation of remixes done by Shadow's fans - which should being drop today. My initial thought going through the album was that most of the DJ's did a decent job at putting their own spin on Shadow's music, but none really stood out. There's some that caught my ear, but most failed to keep my attention. So I [...]

Today I was reminiscing about past summers and favorite pool-side songs, when I remembered one of my favorite summer dayz groups, Latyrx. What the hell ever happened to those guys? They had two exceptional albums and then split ways. Originally, my favorite of the two was Lyrics Born over Lateef (the Truth Speaker), but as time progressed and careers developed the tables turned. Lyrics Born has shifted more to a pop sound, which is all in good, but not my thing; while Lateef has hooked up with the likes of Z-Trip, Chief Xcel and Blackalicious, which [...]

Wow. At long last it appears that we are within reach of the hip hop Siren of the Bay Joyo Velarde's first full-length! Titled Love and Understanding , it will release on Tuesday 2/16 on Quannum Projects . Joyo's history with Quannum Records starts before Quannum when DJ Shadow, The Gift of Gab, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born formed Solesides Records where she provided her background vocals to early releases by Lyrics Born, Blackalicious and Lateef. When the crew disbanded Solesides in 1999 and re-emerged as the Quannum Collective we got to hear Joyo as a lead [...]

Gift of Gab (center) and the Mighty Underdogs. To celebrate seven years as one of best weekly hip-hop nights in the Valley, the Blunt Club has booked a headliner worthy of such an anniversary bash: Gift of Gab , one-half of Blackalicious and a member of the Def Jux-backed Mighty Underdogs , is the featured guest next Thursday's throwdown . If you're skeptical about why the man calls himself the Gift of Gab, take heed . My guess is, we're in for [...]

Words By Prop Jay On a slow day, I reverted to digging through some classics. Therefore, I present you with this old Bay Area Latyrx jam. The Solesides crew is simply legendary, and Lateef and Lyrics Born through their group Latyrx generously helped contribute to earning this title. This jam is exactly how I got turned on to the crew, and it was this track that later led me to hearing DJ Shadow's classic album Entroducing . It's off their second release [...]
