Frank Yang 2010 wasn't really that long ago, but apparently it was long enough that I'd just about forgotten about Oxford, England's Stornoway despite their debut Beachcomber's Windowsill making it onto my year-end list , helped along by a stellar local live debut that December at the El Mocambo. Which is not to say that I had forgotten them completely or that I liked them, but by the time their follow-up album Tales From Terra Firma came out in mid-March, they'd [...]

Following the release of her stunning 2011 album We Sink , Icelandic songstress Sóley Stefánsdóttir takes the Best Fit Q&A and educates us with some classical choices, scares us with her super power choice and tells us who she'd most like to apologise to. Who would play you in the movie of your life? Johnny Depp! What would your superpower be and why? Killing people with my eyes. Don't ask me why. What’s your idea [...]

Still on my CMW adventures on March 21st. I randomly check out this free showcase at Moog Audio Store on 442 Queen St West. It was a showcase presented by Nordic by Nature and Swede & Sour . I was glad to check this out because two of the acts was from Europe and one from Iceland. Playing at this showcase: • Sóley (Iceland) • Sandra Kolstad (Norway) • [...]

Frank Yang Show cancellations are pretty much part and parcel of the Canadian Musicfest experience, particularly when you're most keen on the international acts who've been duped coerced into playing the fest, but it's especially disappointing when it's a) one of the bands you most wanted to see, b) they were one of the very first acts confirmed for the fest in November , and c) it happens just hours before showtime. But things like lymph node infections do happen, and with Efterklang singer Casper Clausen out [...]

Andrew Synowiez Know what week it is? It's Canadian Music Week , which means it's also Canadian Musicfest , which means it's the week where all the Toronto clubs filled up with acts from near and far and folks who would normally be out and about with a fistful of tickets guaranteeing admission were now brandishing wristbands that they hoped would get them into the clubs and prove to be the mathematically superior value that they hoped. And if those equations included trying to get into the shows of advertised headliners Rihanna or Nick [...]
Flying into Icelandic airspace while listening to some soothing sounds on the in-flight entertainment system, a peek out the window reveals the Northern Lights dancing on the horizon. Such are the perks of flying up here at this time of year. Having attended Iceland Airwaves back in November and heard that there was a new festival to be sampled in mid-February it didn’t take any convincing for State to head north once again to the land of fire, ice and magnificent music. Sónar Reykjavík, an offshoot of parent festival Sónar in Barcelona, has found a home [...]

Frank Yang The nice thing about having written about Swedish duo The Deer Tracks at length over over the past ten months is that rather than bother with any preamble, I can just point you to those past pieces and get right to it. I honestly hadn't expected them to return to town so soon after NXNE last year , not because they didn't want to but because of the economic realities of small international acts trying to tour this continent. But with the [...]

I wasn't sure what to expect last Sunday night. I was seeing three Icelandic bands—one quiet singer-songwriter, one Afro-beat dance act, and one bow tie-wearing electro-pop group. At the Kennedy Center . Free. One thing was clear—there was no way Iceland Airwave's showcase was going to be boring. Part of the Kennedy Center’s month-long Nordic Cool festival, this was a rare chance for Washingtonians to see up-and-coming Icelandic artists Sóley , Retro Stefson , and FM Belfast . [...]
Pick a Piper -- "All Her Colours" (ft. John Schmersal) Because: Pick a Piper is a solo/side project by Caribou's drummer Brad Weber, and it has all the percussive wizardry you would expect, plus a falsetto-gilded guest spot by Caribou singer John Schmersal. The Postal Service -- "A Tattered Line Of String" Because: It's the [...]

Moosic, moosic, moosic The news spread quickly on Saturday evening that the hardworking put-upon staff of HMV stores in Cork, Limerick and Tallaght had vacated the premises having acquired a written guarantee from the administrator that wages owed will be paid on Friday as planned. Fingers crossed now that is the case. Today's playlist is specifically dedicated to all the staff who staged the various sit-ins, with all tracks taken from Icelandic bands seeing as their country has blossomed since showing authorities they simply would no longer put up with their inept [...]

Every year I find a plethora of music that would fit perfectly on my year end music lists. Unfortunately, a large majority of the music I discover is from years before and therefore disqualified from my arbitrary year end list making rules. That's why I've decided to make a list of the favorite artists and songs I discovered last year whose music was actually released previous to 2012. There can only be so many Rodriguez's out there, so the majority of my list consists of bands from the past few years who forever reason [...]
Icelandic songstress Sóley recently visited the 9:30 Club while on tour with Of Monsters and Men. Like many musicians in Iceland, she splits her time among a number of bands/projects, but of late has come to prefer the process of working solo, where she maintains all of the creative control. Now off of her tour, she's back to work recording a new album. But watch the clip above as she performs "Sun is Going Down," "Smashed Birds" and brand new song "Wedding."
