Melyssa takes a look at a handful of unexposed folk artists, with their new releases serving as very suitable autumn listening. A one-man project produces engaging lush folk with electronic infusions, a duo combines ethereal harmonies with a love for Solomon Burke, and another one-man effort sounds like a cross between Elliott Smith and Remy Zero.
BBC Burke tells it like it is, like the sensitive man, wronged lover and righteous preacher that he truly is. For his final work, Willie Mitchell found a perfect partner, and Nothing's Impossible sees him depart on a high.

I love Solomon Burke's early soul recordings. Recently, though, I've found myself turning more often to his later albums. Late in life, Burke's voice became huskier, sweeter. He seemed more reflective as he sang, almost as if he were pausing to savor every note. I certainly plan to do the same whenever I listen to "Hold on Tight," an album he recorded two years ago with the Dutch band De Dijk. I like most of the album's songs a lot. The title track, though, is fabulous. It's bittersweet listening to it knowing that it will [...]
Solomon Burke & De Dijk - Hold On Tight

The freshest shit out of Connecticut we've heard pretty much ever. Jazz, funk, pop, soul, Beatles, it's all here and it's fucking great! We are SUPER stoked to catch these guys at SXSW. Sample the jam for "Santos & Ken" below and catch, if not a little Holy Ghost, a little Teddy Pendergrass or some Solomon Burke. Pour one out. The Rolling Stone pays tribute to the fallen legend Solomon Burke.

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Awards Matt Sayles, AP In his Grammy debut, Mick Jagger conjured the outsized spirit -- and wardrobe -- of soul singer Solomon Burke , who died last year. The show-stopping performance came immediately after the show's annual In Memoriam segment. Jagger, in a tribute to "The King of Rock 'n' Soul," strutted onstage wearing a luscious gold cape, a nod to [...]

I guess it's time to wrap it up for Christmas 2010. I thought I'd go out with a couple R&B/soul songs - one of my favorite varieties of Christmas tunes. Gatemouth Moore, backed by the Tiny Grimes Swingtet, offers a classic plea directed at santa Claus. The final lines are one of my favorite set of lyrics in any Christmas song. Moore was a blues shouter in the Forties. After a conversion in 1949, he spent the next 30 years as a preacher. The late, great Solomon Burke was also spiritually inclined. He preached [...]

Alex Chilton With every year that passes, another sorry constellation of musical bright lights see their stars burn out forever, their souls going to join John, Freddie, Jimi and the rest in rock-star Valhalla. Whilst any passing life is distressing to contemplate, at least musicians can continue to touch people posthumously through a legacy which will far outlive them, and may even grow in breadth, stature and popularity in their absence. As 2010 draws to a close, we thought it proper to revisit the work of some of this year's departed musicians, to remind old fans [...]

Today we continue our look back at the year that was with a list of 10 Great Musicians We Lost in 2010. We'll feel the loss of these innovative artists for years to come and we wanted to pay our respects once more. 1. The first Christmas soul mix was very popular. Thank you to all the kind people who took the time to say nice things about it (and about my efforts here in general). Comments are always appreciated. As I pointed out in the blurb for the first mix, I held back a lot of great stuff for the follow-up. So this one might be even better than the first compilation. You be the judge of that. Be advised that in this batch are a couple of tracks that might not appeal to your mother: Rufus Thomas (Carla's [...]
Grammys, blues radio, and album sales are all covered in this week's Blues Power Rankings...
Surfer/Musician Donavon Frankenreiter recorded this for an all covers EP released in 2007 titled Recycled Recipes . Donavon's California-vibe somehow makes the song not sound so sad on this particular rendition. In Cover Wars, I'm never sure whether or not to include versions that feature the original recording artists, but my general rule is that if they are a supporting musician, then it's fair game. So we've got Garth Hudson (keyboardist from The Band ) with his wife Maud Hudson singing lead in a brisk tempo from their 2005 release Live at the [...]
The Grim Reaper had another busy month. He took from us the soul legend Solomon Burke, who only a few months ago delivered a new album, and the brilliant General Johnson, a wonderful vocalist whose Chairmen of the Board shone in the early '70s, and who wrote such hits as Patches (Clarence Carter), Want Ads (Honey Cone) and Freda Payne's Bring The Boys Home (the video for You Got Me Dangling On A String is rather nice). Reggae fans will mourn the soulful Gregory Isaacs, and post-punk fans the passing of The Slits' German-born punster Ari Up. [...]
