I'm enjoying the self-titled debut of Amber Farris' band, "Somebody's Darling." It's kind of like Lucero or Old '97s fronted by a woman with a powerful set of lungs. Rock and roll/country, straight-ahead four-person rock and roll on Shiner Records / PaloDuro Records. In fact, it's hard to write much about them, because the music is so up front and pure. It makes you want to grab a brew, sit at a bar, and stare at the chicks who will definitely dig the band. That's the best thing about alt-country sung by a [...]
Alisha HurtDavid Ponder, guitarist for local roots rock up-and-comer Somebody's Darling, just sent me a couple of MP3s to offer DC-9 readers. "Easy" and "Hearts Too Young" appeared on last year's epon... Continue reading "Bonus MP3s: Somebody's Darling Gives You Something Old, But Nothing New. At Least Not Yet." >
Ah, Friday. If this were 1993, I'd be gearing up for a badass night of TGIF on ABC. But, alas, it's 2008. Luckily, there's plenty of live music to take in all weekend long. Some pretty good. Some no... Continue reading "Good Friday: Rodney Parker, The Happy Bullets, Ivoryline, The Lashouts, Mad Mexicans, Somebody's Darling, THe BAcksliders, Days of the New, Scuba Team Go, Big Chief" >

Just finished listening to the new, self-titled EP from local alt-country outfit Somebody's Darling and think it's one of the best discs to come across my desk this year. Full of spit and fire, the band is led by Amber Farris, whose powerful set of pipes galvanize the entire group. Sounding a bit like Deborah Harry fronting the Old 97's, songs like "Farewell," "Heart's Too Young" and "Chug Chuggin'" are rough-around-the-edges country-rock tunes that go down well with a couple of Shiners. "I ain't easy/I ain't even trying to pretend," sings Ferris on "Easy," [...]

So where's all the love for Rodney Parker and 50 Peso Reward? It's Labor Day Weekend, folks, which can only mean one thing: Put them white pants in the close till springtime, right? Well, I've been told to do that with mine, at least. A shame, too. Because, you might not know it, but I look good in those white pants... Anyway, I digress. As always, here are the shows we've already told you about... Tonight, there's the Shibboleth , Stumptone , Slow Burners [...]
Somebody's Darling is a somewhat recently formed local alt-country/pop quartet led by vocalist Amber Farris and guitarist David Ponder. Farris and Ponder spent two years in a Dallas band called Raleigh , releasing an EP and an LP before lead singer Josh King bolted to Austin. Recruiting bassist Adam Carter and drummer Nate Wedan, Farris and Ponder decided to head in a more alt-country direction and Somebodys Darling was born. The song "Farewell" will be featured on an EP slated for release in the next couple of weeks, and it's a gem--kind of like [...]
