Everything is true and nothing is true. Truth is subjective, according to Australian singer/songwriter and Something for Kate front man Paul Dempsey. He has written high-energy, noise-rock-inspired pop tunes as head honcho of SFK, as well as mild-mannered acoustic guitar ballads flying solo. His recent US release Everything is True reflects intelligent and painstakingly fresh lyric-writing, beautiful interpretations of life's most mysterious qualities, and artful arrangement and production. The record reached number five on the Australian Record Industry charts, number one on the iTunes chart, and spent almost four months on the ARIA chart. But let's not focus [...]
This will most likely be my only post for the week. Barring any further disruption (...long story) I will be heading to Miami this Thursday for the Ultra Music Festival to see Duran Duran, Underworld, Hybrid, Pendulum, Erasure, Royksopp, Ed Rush & Optical, The Chemical Brothers and about a billion other electronic acts. I'm getting to South Beach on Thursday afternoon. The concert, however, does not start until Friday afternoon, so if anyone out there has any entertainment recommendations for someone who does not like to go to clubs, get shitfaced and have creepy anonymous sex [...]
'If this song is from the perspective of Mr. Miyagi, it's really creepy.'
There are plenty of musicians that use the luck of being born with a celebrity surname to speed up their own career, but not Laura Imbruglia. The younger sister of pop queen Natalie has spent most of her career trying to forge it in the Australian music scene without the merits of a famous moniker, but admits juggling the Imbruglia tag with a burgeoning punk rock career has not been easy.

This past summer we chronicled Paul Dempsey's attempt to duplicate his Something For Kate success stateside. So far, so good, and today we're pleased as punch to be sharing Fast Friends , the second single from his U.S. solo debut, Everything Is True . Allow me to be candid here for a moment. It's getting on late October, and we've heard more than a few great songs this year from both the established (The National, Alejandro [...]

Someone gave me a Something For Kate record years back. I have no idea who or exactly when that was. But from hearing former lead singer Paul Dempsey 's familiar voice, I know I probably got a lot of listens in. Paul has stepped out on his own with a solo debut called Everything Is True and plans on doing a month-long, free, New York residency at The Living Room in August to support the release. The album is receiving tons of love in Australia, where its gone Gold and been named [...]

Chances are you wouldn't know Paul Dempsey if you had to step over him on a New York City street, but in his native Australia, this guy is pretty much the cat's pajamas. As the vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter for rock trio Something For Kate , Dempsey's mantel is overburdened with awards, yet he remains basically an unknown commodity in the United States. So, he's done what anyone in his position might: pack up the guitar, throw some clean underwear in a bag and set off to see [...]

I saw a gorgeous sight this morning, driving along a twisty-turny country road. I'd just crossed a rickety old bridge and after coasting around the bend I came across a grey kangaroo sitting in the middle of the road. Green grass on either side, shrouded in fog, it stared at me calmly before casually bounding away through the bush. It was a fantastic start to the day. Here's to unexpected views around the bend. And here's to the great pile of coverage I have languishing on my hard drive. Enjoy. Here I [...]

"The mind that is wise mourns less for what age takes away; than what it leaves behind." William Wordsworth What Bullshit! Today I turn twenty, if I was a car, you wouldn't want to buy me. I've been wearing down these bones, grinding these teeth and smashing that liver for two decades. What do I have to show for it, what can I say I've achieved, what can I promise I will achieve in [...]

I think when I first heard Ramona Was a Waitress by Paul Demspey I liked it. But for some reason I was reluctant to admit it. Nostalgia is a weird thing for me, more often than not it makes me love something that my brain knows is utter crap. But every now and again it encourages me to section off emotions into periods of time. Confused? In 2001 Something For Kate's Echolalia somehow made it in to my battered discman and stayed there for quite some time. I think it [...]

hmm...so ol' skool that I even spell it correctly. Haha...anyway, the old school sounds that I'm talking about is the stuff I use to listen to in High School. Stuff like Regurgitator, Jebediah, Something For Kate, the Superjesus etc etc etc. Someone posted up an old 'gurge video on facebook and it got me thinking and reminiscing about it all! So, just for you cats, here's a few youtube videos! First off, it's Harpoon by Jebediah. Something For Kate did a cover of this track and made it really dark! But you can get some of [...]
One of my favourite bands from Australia is indie rock trio Something For Kate. Over the last decade they've consistenly delivered quality records that are immediately memorable and rewarding. Their album Echolalia (Murmur, 2001) is a stellar work featuring lead singer Paul Dempsey's crisp writing and guitar work. Dempsey is now gearing up for the release of his new solo album titled Everything Is True (set to drop August 14). 'Out The Airlock' is the first single from said album. It's a sweet, anti-love ditty that in some weird way reminds me of 'You [...]

In case you didn't see yesterday, The Goo Goo Dolls have posted their track "Fiction (Before It's Too Late)" from "The Transformers soundtrack" on their MySpace page. Seems that some people aren't too thrilled with it, but I really like it. Secondly, it is finally Friday and boy what a week it has been. And I am exhausted! So here are some sleepy-themed songs for you. Something For Kate - " Song For A Sleepwalker " (mp3) The Cardigans " 03.45: No Sleep " (mp3) I'm From Barcelona - " [...]
