In an article from the New York Times last week, Judd Greenstein, the curator of the Ecstatic Music Festival , noted how the young chamber sextet yMusic doesn't have a learning curve when it comes to playing classical instruments with a pop music sensibility. Talking about performance practice, a term more often reserved for Rameau and Chopin than Jay-Z and Arcade Fire, Greenstein highlighted the viability of staging an entire festival devoted to the blurring of popular and classical genre designations. The basic gist of it is this: for composers and performers who grew [...]

Ülalnähtaval peol kõlab reedel suure tõenäosusega ka allkuuldav lugu. Palju muud põnevat ka, ole valmis. Päev varasemal kontserdil jõuab ehk pisut ka lugusid poetada pärast bände. Tulgem! Son Lux - All the Right Things ( mp3 )

Son Lux – We Are Rising The second album from New Yorker Ryan Lott, We Are Rising is an electronic opus that lays claim to a fertile musical landscape that's largely neglected by the mass of modern electronic artists. Created in 28 days as part of National Public Radio's RPM Challenge, We Are Rising is beautifully arranged with heavy doses of classical elements (strings, woodwinds, brass, opera), chorus, and psychedelia artfully combined within an elegant & modern electronic amalgam. 'We Are Rising' (featured below) is atypical [...]

It's that time of year to look back on the past 12 months and say "what the hell happened to the last 12 months?!". It's also that time of year where us music bloggers and self-proclaimed critics take the time to put together some Best Of lists for your reading pleasure. They don't really mean a whole lot and you can love 'em or leave 'em, but it seems like the right thing to do to sum up the year in preparation of the next. This year we're featuring personal lists from all of our fantastic writers. [...]

So...I suppose I'm a tad bit late to the year-end-best-of-lists party but oh well. Josh already offered up his favorite tracks in the year-end best-of playlist and, while our lists have a lot of crossover, I thought I'd offer up my favorite 50 tracks from the past year. I've struggled with the idea of trying to put a 'best-of' stamp on anything I listen to based solely on the fact that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of ranking all the tracks I love. This is more a representation of all my favorite tracks from [...]

Del álbum We Are Rising lanzado este año.
Son Lux (that's NYC's Ryan Lott) took about four years to write his first album. His second? A grand total of 28 days. It was a challenge by NPR and he somehow pulled it off with astounding results. Lott heartrendingly warbles his way through each (incredibly diverse) track, culminating in a really fantastic album. Stream the whole thing here . For you to listen to here is "All the Right Things."
24 years ago today, the Earth shook, mountains crumbled, seas swelled, and, as a result, Eric Weiner was born to save us all from mediocre music. Tirelessly taking over car radios, making mix tapes, and sending out hordes of links for new bands, Eric has always done a fantastic job of spreading the word. As a way to say thank you to him, and make sure you've got some great tunes to listen to as well, each person at TWHP has shared a couple of our favorite songs that he's given us this year. Thanks for everything [...]

can you hear the ever groaning, shedding hours we have become ♫ Son Lux - Rising Let's see if all this talk of rising sons can't actually resurrect one on this rainy London day. Although, "Rising" is kind of the perfect gloomy day music. A bit haunted and a bit happy, your emotions can sway either way as you follow the songs rhythms and waves. A touch of both Sufjan's spirit and hand add some of that Illinois magic that we all miss. Nice. [Thanks to Fairlycoherent [...]

All The Right Things - Son Lux This past February, Ryan Lott, the sole member of Son Lux (@sonlux), stepped up to The Wire 's challenge to write and record an album in only one month - a fairly drastic change from the four-year span required on his '08 debut At War with Walls and Mazes . For a release produced in such a short time, We Are Rising is remarkably creative and hauntingly beautiful. The album features ghostly tracks, big hooks, [...]
We've gushed plenty here at TWJ about how much we love the work of Ryan Lott, aka Son Lux. His new album We Are Rising was painstakingly constructed under the crunchiest of time crunches - 28 days to be exact. Lott was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about making We Are Rising, [...]
