All photos: Robert Jacobs Get Ponytail's entire set at Beatbots A/V Club! Compression have been around for a while (1993 to be exact). To quote front-man Greg Scelsi "probably before most of you could drive." They started the night on a solid, forceful note. Being the first hardcore (with plenty of metal flavorings) band I've probably seen in about a year, I can say they have a fury about them. Their sound is a truly [...]
In the past month I've finally started occasionally taking photos to accompany some of my posts on the City Paper's Noise blog at http://noise.citypaper.com (with asterisks next to posts that include pictures by me). My latest posts included: The Club Beat with Dirty Nation Entertainment , Teop with Mullyman (pictured above), Comp, Skarr Akbar, Little Clayway, Huli Shallone, Heavy Gold, Al Great, SL Danga and 1st Family @ Sonar *, 2 Time Quitters, Raspberry Campaign and Engine @ the Ottobar *, Pearl Jam and Ted Leo @ the Verizon Center , and [...]
Alexa's Take: On a Sunday, I was curious to see what crowd would show for this rainy summer night of punk-ish madness. Sonar introduced Ratsize, leading the show with a loud, messy performance, including a cover of the Adolescents' "No Way". Lead vox Pat Martin put on a pretty good show, ramming into the crowd and spitting beer on himself, but the band lost momentum when they paused between songs. Right when you got a steady beat, hyped up and ready for more, the song would end and they'd take a minute [...]
Alright, Baltimore: Hip hop is woven into the fabric of this city. If you haven't already heard about Salim (www.salimmusic.com), you need to (a) check out his debut LP, Hip Hop Revisited ( read the Any Given Tuesday review ), one of the best Baltimore albums of 2007 and (b) head to Sonar on 12/28 to watch Salim as he and his band open up for Rakim . Yes, Rakim. One of the best emcees on the face of the Earth (running neck and neck with KRS-One in this writer's book) has asked [...]

X-102 (Jeff Mills and Mike Banks) Rediscovers The Rings of Saturn
Originally released in 1992 and produced by three of Techno's most celebrated figures (Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Robert Hood), X-102 discovers the Rings of Saturn is something of a classic. Even on my 3rd generation dub of questionable quality, it still sounds like something beamed in from the future and hasn't left my MP3 player since I managed to track it down. Taking it's cue from the space probes venturing deep off into the Solar System; tracks were named after Saturn's moons and rings, the music capturing a real sense of the cosmic whilst always [...]
