When you are dubbed this generations Burt Bacharach before you are even 25 years old, it can be a double edged sword. You are sure to garner some fans of Bacharach and his work and similar artists. But when you are as young at Lerche, you may fly right over the head of your own generation. Sure, Bacharach is not just for the older crowd and there are plenty of baby boomers who enjoy indie rock (or maybe a few at least), but any loose description can bring different things. So, if you are [...]
My internet has been kinda sketchy this entire week so I want to apologize for having the Daily Graboid up so late. It'd kinda odd because there are some points where the internet is fully functional as I can chat on instant messenger, but I can't view any websites. Very odd though, and it's pissing me off more than anything. I think one thing i'd like to to improve with this features is extending it to releases outside of the US. It kinda seems like overload though so i've alway decided to not try it. [...]

Yessirrebob, The Late Greats turns one year old today. I could wax all nostalgic about the past 365 days. Instead, I have decided to write a mission statement, besides the slogan ("home for the greatest songs never heard" which was paraphrased from the Wilco song that gave this blog its name). So here goes: The Late Greats strives to introduce fans of music to new bands/artists/musicians that do not get much exposure in the blogsphere. Some criterion for "songs never heard": well-written songs with meaningful lyrics and a nice melody; musicians that deserve more publicity than they get; [...]

Bergen, Norway Could someone please answer me this - when did Sondre Lerche become a Brit? Maybe I'm crazy, but there is something very British sounding about this new record of his. Regardless, it's way more rockin' for him and it's really growing on me the more I listen to it. "The Tape" Sondre Lerche on MySpace

Wahoo Colts! I had so much fun watching the Superbowl yesterday (although it's not quite as stirring as my first love of soccer , the true "football"). It was, however, an American cultural event not to be missed, as always -- and a fine excuse to eat chips and chili-cheese dip with beer for dinner with friends. Right on. Undecided (i.e. apathetic) going into the game since neither of my teams were playing, I quickly decided to root for the underdog after the Bears scored [...]

I've been a fan of Sondre Lerche for awhile now. He started off with two great folk-rock/pop albums, Faces Down and Two Way Monolouge . Then, last year, he left the rock genre completely, and released Duper Sessions -- an album comprised solely of jazz compositions, with a few covers. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but it was great (see Best Albums of 2006 ). Now, he's [...]

1. Longpigs - On and On - Welcome back to 1996, though you probably don't remember this song because it was on and off the radio in a matter of weeks, I believe. Anyway, this is probably one of my favorite songs of the era. It's like Oasis, but good. hahahahahaha. Don't mind me. [from THE SUN iS OfTEN oUT | buy ] 2. Sondre Lerche - After All - I wonder if Sondre speaks English around his native country of Norway. His English is impeccable [...]
"Runnin' around like an animule. I'm runnin' down the hall, back and forth, and back and forth. I'm runnin' suicide drills or something, like I'm tryin' out for the team !" -- Tom, getting fired up for the show Rollins-style "Two for The Queen , three for The Queen , two for The Queen , three for The Queen ..." -- A series of old New Jersey residents succumb to the magnetic pull of the Helen Mirren vehicle "You should move to Baltimore, start [...]
So I said I promised something nice here for hardly posting at all last week, and here it is. Forgive me as I just haven't felt like posting at all but I think that'll change starting tomorrow. I wasn't planning on doing anymore lists, but I think compiling a song list just felt right. I'm sure i'm missing a lot as I just wrote down whatever came up in my head and kept the first 30 songs that sprung to mind. I didn't rank them either, cos I really wasn't interested in doing that at all. I wanted to include [...]
25a. Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down Quartet - Duper Sessions I was somewhat surprised when I first learned about this album. Sondre doing jazz wasn't too surprising, since his style fits it nicely, but I had no idea he'd been working with a quartet for his next album. The results were even better than I imagined and, while it's more downtempo than his usual songs, the temporary switch in style was an enjoyable change for us long time Sondre fans mp3: [...]

Here's the albums I've been listening to from this year. The order is quite arguable (as with any music list), but these are simply the albums I've enjoyed most this year. All mp3s below are from the album discussed. Thanks for reading! By the way, I dislike writing a list of favorite albums from 2006 in December, because there are quite a few albums that I need some more listening time with (i.e. Grizzly Bear, Brightblack Morning Light, The Grates, Birdmonster, The Mountain Goats, Oxford Collapse, Annuals). But, I wanted to clarify that there are many [...]

The new album by Sondre Lerche is Phantom Punch . Drawing on early musical influences from 80s pop to Brazilian music, he recorded many of the songs in one take. He says, "I wanted every song to jump out of the speakers-punchy, concise pop songs, played with restless spirit." Airport Taxi Reception After All See the video for Say It All here.

(Disclaimer: Please read this in the intended way or it could all seem very very weird...) Let me say this first -- I love my wife in a massive way. She's currently all belly with our first baby and we get on awesome. No complaints. She actually just had this very cool personal coffee-table book made (thank you MyPublisher ) with pictures from our early dating days, through engagement, through wedding prep, to the wedding, to honeymoon, and a bit beyond. It's awesome. And it got us thinking. [...]
If Clay Aiken is this century's Barry Manilow, then Sondre Lerche is most certainly this century's Burt Bacharach. That's not to say he'll be conducting "Wrap It Up" riffs at the Oscars in 40 years or that he'll be self-dropped in whatever the future equivalent of Austin Powers is-rather, he's simply doing something that's simultaneously genre-transcendent and timeless that nobody else is doing. But I guess the real question is: How well is he doing it? His largely uneven debut Faces Down was a mix of traditional pop inspired by [...]

I've always said how much I consider Sondre Lerche as one of the most criminally under-appreciated singer-songwriters of the last few years. This is most evident now as the news of a new single that was released from the Norwegian's fourth album Phantom Punch due out next year sometime in February. Even though I did read this news on Pitchfork , I haven't really seen it mentioned elsewhere on the blogs. Sondre is a brilliant talent in my opinion, the proof is in his albums like [...]
6 months! How was your weekend? Which Sufjan show did you attend? Do you think New York will win Flavor Of Love this time around? Ha. Here's your manic tunes. Enjoy! Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire Sondre Lerche - Track You Down Joseph Arthur - Black Lexus Cellardoor - I Can't See 120 Days - [...]
After a fantastic week of shows last week, and preceding next week's amazing lineup, this week is a bit quieter. Maybe all the good bands are avoiding the hoopla that surrounds President Bush everytime he's here in New York. Or perhaps they are just giving us show goers a little reprieve from all the excitement. Whatever the case may be there are still a few noteworthy shows you may want to check out. I think I'll be taking most of the week off from the show going and get some much needed sleep. Here's what I would attend each night [...]
Given the nature of our free market economy, unless you happen to be independently wealthy or a big fan of nomadic, unshowered begging, you have to work. At least half of your waking life in fact will be spent doing or providing something in exchange for money, and only a disturbingly low percentage of working people get to actually enjoy the process of doing or providing.

Welcome to part 2 of 3 of the halfway-through-2006 songs of the year sessions, in which we encounter an aging punk band, a Coldplay rip-off, and a sultry Texan chanteuse. Mission of Burma - "2wice": mp3 You don't get to be a rock band forever. Most old codgers have long since given into decripitude and easy chairs, but not Mission of Burma. The horrible truth about Burma is that they still rock harder than than a slab of two-ton granite. "2wice" isn't the heaviest song on The Obliterati , but it's [...]
Seeing as how we're all terrified of getting an RIAA e-mail after the Gnarls Barkley incident , if you want mp3s for these fine folks you'll have to look in the usual places. Try Google (seriously) or you can always stream them on Hype Machine . Anyway, the second half of March saw a couple of my favorite records of the year. I am still listening to them obsessively, and hopefully you will be too. March, Pt. 2: Ghostface Killah - [...]
