Songs: Ohia - Lioness Do you know how Eskimos take care of a wolf problem? I heard this in a sermon illustration in middle school. What they do is dip a sword or machete of some sort into a bucket of blood. Then they let it freeze. Then they dip it again. They repeat this until a thick coat of blood builds up around the blade. Then, at night, they stick the sword, hilt-first, into the snow and go to sleep. The wolf'll come by and sniff blood and take [...]

This fact may be hard to believe, but throughout their long and storied career the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have never released a studio album consisting entirely of their own original compositions. The legendary New Orleans act will change all that come July 9, with the release of That's It! via Sony Legacy. The 11-track record, which was recorded at the band's home-base at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter, was co-produced by Pres Hall's own Ben Jaffe and My Morning Jacket front man Jim James , [...]

Last month's passing of Jason Molina, the man behind Songs Ohia and Magnolia Electric Company was an incredibly sad moment for the indie rock community. One small shred of positive light has been the exposure of his music to a large audience that he never had the opportunity to reach when he was alive. The latest such exposure is the national television debut of one of Jason's songs by way of the Band of Horses. In addition to dusting off one of their own classics "The General Specific", BOH used the national stage to pay tribute to their friend and [...]

La banda hizo un cover a "I've Been Riding With the Ghost", además de interpretar "The General Specific" de su álbum Cease to Begin .

Last night, Band Of Horses joined the ranks honoring the loss of Jason Molina with their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live . They paid tribute by performing Songs:Ohia track "I've Been Riding With The Ghost," as well as playing their own cut "The General Specific" from 20072s Cease To Begin . Watch both below. This week, Secretly Canadian reissued Songs: Ohia' s first EP, 19972s Hecla & Griper , in recognition of the album's 15th anniversary. According to press for the release, this is just one of multiple projects the label was working on with Jason Molina before his passing back in March . Available on vinyl for the first time ever, the reissue of Hecla & Griper features two previously unreleased Songs: Ohia cuts: "Debts" and "Pilot & Friend". In addition, there are two alternate tracks that would later be included on Songs: Ohia's [...]

You don't typically equate metal-heads with craft beer, but Iron Maiden is looking to change that. The legendary British metal act has announced that they've teamed up with the folks at Robinsons Brewery to produce Trooper Premium British Beer . The 4/7% ABV brew, named after a song off their 1983 album Piece of Mind , features "malt flavours and citric notes from a unique blend of Bobec, Goldings and Cascade hops [that] dominate this deep golden ale with a subtle hint of lemon." [...]

It seemed wrong to do anything outsi de a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in - folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. Check out the play list below. "Simpletons" by The Bats off Free All the Monsters [...]
Jason Molina died a weekend ago due to "organ failure as a result of years of alcoholism." At the age of 39. Which is too young for anyone to die and too young for as talented a singer / songwriter as he. Molina started out many years ago as Songs: Ohia, putting out poignant, devastating record after record before shifting his focus in the middle part of the last decade to a project he called Magnolia Electric Co. and then, unfortunately, ending his career too soon using his own name. His apparently final album, Autumn Bird Songs , [...]

Frank Yang I went into this year's Canadian Musicfest with a pretty basic plan - see as little as possible. Okay, that's not really accurate since that would have easily been accomplished by staying home and I was still out four nights in a row, but rather than engage in the club-hopping that the fest usually demands, I opted to choose one thing a night that I was genuinely interested in seeing rather than trek around the city hoping to shake something worthwhile out of the lineup. Wednesday night, that honour went to a show that [...]

On the one hand, the pure love expressed for Molina - from Steve Albini , to Jens Lekman , to Will Johnson , to artist Will Schaff , to Strand of Oaks' Tim Showalter, to countless others - has been comforting in the sense that so many have been affected by just one man's songs. It has become clear in the last seven days, that his seemingly little-known music was cherished by a small few for its honesty, craftsmanship, and beauty. Personally, I never knew how many people felt the same as me. In death, it [...]
Loss is the hardest thing any of us face in life. It comes suddenly and destroys ruthlessly. Being under appreciated while you're here...is equally potent. Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and the Magnolia Electric Company died this past weekend. He was 39. His music is timeless. Here are the 11 Best Songs By Songs: Ohia: The Black Crow (The Lioness) Hot Black Silk (Axxess & Ace) Nervous
After being understandably shocked about Jason Molina's passing , I figured it was best to give him a little tribute with a second song from Magnolia Electric Co. . This is possibly my favourite of his tunes, and a favourite song in general: it's absolutely drenched in style and mood, evoking the mystery of a desert at night far better than anything I could ever write. Coupled with some amazing, evocative lyrics (k Mamma, here comes midnight, with the dead moon in its jaws , one of my most loved lyrics ever), you've got a [...]

I'm in college, so I just don't sleep. I mean, technically I sleep. But it doesn't happen often enough. I used to need complete silence to sleep, but a year and a half stint living in West Campus has made my ideal sleeping conditions involve the soft garbled sounds of partying. So I sometimes I fall asleep to songs, just to create some sound, but there's an art to sleepy songs. They need to be appropriately soft and lovely. See, you start off by brushing your teeth to a song that's soft but still has some pump up [...]
Earlier this week the music world lost Jason Molina , who passed away at the all too young age of 39 from organ failure stemming from his long and well-documented battle with alcoholism. The singer-songwriter, who had been putting out records since the late '90s for Secretly Canadian, is best known as the front man for the psych-folk project Songs: Ohia and more recently the fantastic Neil Young-influenced country-rock act Magnolia Electric Co. As a tribute to Molina The Avett Brothers have uploaded this acoustic cover [...]
Sleep well... Today's playlist is dedicated entirely to Jason Molina ( Songs: Ohia , Magnolia Electric Co. ), who died on March 16th. I can consider myself one of those extremely privileged people to experience Molina's songs performed live, catching the great Indianapolis songwriter play a sun-kissed garden set as Magnolia Electric Co. at End of the Road a number of years back. Simply click play below to begin today's playlist. [...]
