Jason Molina @ Hopetoun Hotel, 15 Nov 2006 A Jason Molina solo acoustic set at the Hoey was always going to be something special, and he did not disappoint with an enchanting performance on Wednesday evening. Sydney's Jack Ladder was the support, and he had some help from Laurence Pike on drums ( Pivot , Triosk ) and a bass player who I'm quite positive is part of Decoder Ring . The only other time I had seen Mr.Ladder accompanied by someone else on stage was [...]

First off, a big thank you to the friend who sent me this session earlier in the week -- it's been a fine listen indeed. Secondly, if you are a Molina, Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co. fan you will relish this Live session from the "Duyster" radio show on Studio Brussel, FM 94.5 Belgium. Molina is in fine form, playing tunes that would soon find their way onto albums and become Live staples. Enjoy. DOWNLOAD: MP3: [...]

Back in 2000, Songs: Ohia (now Magnolia Electric Co.) sold a tour-only album, Protection Spells , that was limited to only 500 copies. Finally, the album is more widely available, via download through emusic. It's a collection of songs that were recorded through several Songs: Ohia tours, without any rehearsal, second takes, or anything of that nature. It's Jason Molina raw and without second chances. Songs: Ohia - Protection Spells [emusic purchase link] Songs: Ohia - Two Blue Lights [...]

Seeing as how there is an 80% chance of rain in my geographic location today, I took a little time to compile some of my current favorite songs that are rain-related. I have done this type of compilation once before and many of my friends seemed to enjoy it, and I think that the songs that I chose this time around are even better than my first attempt. All of the songs have titles that have something to do with rain or water, except for the final track "Farewell Transmission" by Songs: Ohia , but since chances [...]
Stoplight Sleep is finally back from its summer vacation! To make up for last time, but post will include more music and comics than a SS post ever has. 1. Last year one of the greatest contemporary punk bands, Hot Snakes broke up. On August 15, Swami Records will release a live recording, Thunder Down Under including a live version of this track: Hot Snakes - "LAX" but [...]

I thought I posted these before, but after seeing it on my *to post* list, I double checked, and sure as sh*t, I haven't. So after yesterdays post of delicious Sleater-Kinney [and related] tracks, I have another post of tracks that I consider to be exquisite stuff. I hope you all do too. "Songs: Ohia was an American indie rock project by Jason Molina from Lorain, Ohio. The second part of the name is both an allusion to the Hawaiian tree Ohia lehua and Molina's home state Ohio. Since 2003, the project has morphed [...]
july 10th listening assignments: 1. josh ritter - here at the right time - yes this album is totally stellar. this is one of those songs where you could hear a pin drop. this is a song for sitting on a rug, wrapped tight in a blanket, and contemplating. the reverb makes it sound like he's playing this is a tiny club built just for you. 2. the theater fire - these tears could rust a train - i can't help but [...]

Jason Molina puts out albums like a mad man. Just the other night I was thinking that it's been at least six months since I've heard anything from Molina, so we must be due. It was no suprise then when a little nugget of record label spam landed in my inbox with news that there is a new Magnolia Electric Co. record coming on Sept. 12, and a Jason Molina album coming out on August 22. Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go is the solo album, and is similar to Pyramid Electric [...]
