Neil Halstead (of Slowdive / Mojave 3 fame) delivered his third solo record ‘Palindrome Hunches’ last September and on May 13 the second single ‘Spin The Bottle’ will be available through Sonic Cathedral . Point being, there’s a few extra goodies to be had, including a remix of the album cut ‘Full Moon Rising’. Electronic music veteran (and former Seefeel member) Mark Van Hoen has stepped up to the challenge. Mark has turned the acoustic number into a delightfully more dreamy creation while maintaining the organic feel of the original – see [...]
There’s creepiness aplenty in French synth-pop auteurs Team Ghost’s new video “Dead Film Star.”

Back at the beginning of January we posted a track from the excellent Band In Heaven from a new six track compilation EP titled Psych For Sore Eyes . Now we have the opening track from the EP from MM faves the very mighty Hookworms . Have a listen to The Correspondent below. We ordered our copy way back, and the vinyl is already sold out in the Sonic Cathedral Shop , but pre-orders are apparently still possible at Piccadilly and Rough Trade , or a digital [...]

Band In Heaven's Sleazy Dreams made a strong showing in our Favourite Tracks of 2012 listings and they will soon re-appear on a forthcoming double 73 compilation EP titled Psych For Sore Eyes . It features six different artists including Hookworms and Vacant Lots with all the tracks produced by Sonic Boom. Somewhat less frenetic than Sleazy Dreams , High Low still builds hypnotically over a deceptively simple melody and evokes some of the propulsion of early Spacemen 3 . Highly recommended. The [...]

Closing track from the 'Psych For Sore Eyes' EP - six tracks of modern psychedelia mastered by Sonic Boom and also featuring Hookworms, Ttotals, The Vacant Lots, White Manna and Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. NWMusicPDX faves and SoFlo psychedelic dark angels, The Band In Heaven, have a new (well newly remastered) stream bouncing about the interwebs. High Low was remastered by Sonic Boom and will be featured on London based label Sonic Cathedral's forthcoming comp Psych For Sore Eyes, scheduled for release Feb. 18th. The double 7" green and red vinyl will come with a fold out 3D sleeve and 3D glarsses. Give it a spin.

Baltimore shoegazers Dead Mellotron casually dropped a new EP last week. The four track release is called ' (is/it) ' and kicks off with ' Fade In/Out ' ( download here ). Once again the trio morphs their sound, this time towards droning, lo-fi, dream pop. '(is/it)' is a blissed out listen, less guitar focused, but just as engaging as ever. Download audio file (Dead-Mellotron-Fade-In-Out.mp 3) Visit Dead Mellotron online @ Bandcamp or via Sonic Cathedral Recordings .

The 405 caught up with Nathaniel Cramp from Sonic Cathedral to discuss 'nu-gaze', where he finds his inspiration and 'The Night That Celebrates Itself'. Who we are: Sonic Cathedral started life as a clubnight in 2004 with the tagline The Night That Celebrates Itself . It was all about fond memories of the short-lived and much-maligned shoegaze scene from the early 90s, but also making connections from that to new artists who were directly influenced [...]

Mad Love bursts into the earspace with a somber organ crying behind a druggy Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam -esque folk riff. Christopher Porpora carefully lays out his chords as he asks to be taken away to a place that is as comforting and non-confrontational as the sonic soundscapes he is conducting. The album suddenly dives from the upbeat alt-country tinges of the opener into the exhausting glass half-empty feeling that accompanies a broken heart. With Slowdive like speed, he quickly reveals that he is a master of restraint. He is the slow-burn loner [...]

Since people began experimenting with new ways of producing music in the late 1950s, there's been an alternative lineage that's run alongside popular music; you could think of it as a parallel universe where experimentation and innovation have evolved outside of the mainstream, almost as if hiding in its shadow. These roots can be traced back to garage originators The Wailers and sound explorers such as those at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Then came The Velvet Underground who took tender acoustic songs and embellished them with drones and unorthodox production and arrangements. There's been a continuation of this work running [...]
Knowing what's happened since, (namely the formation of dreampop/alt-country/folk supergroup Mojave 3 and a brace of acclaimed solo albums as a singer-songwriter) it's difficult to believe that when Alan McGee was played the first version of what was to become Slowdive's 'Souvlaki' album twenty years ago, he dismissed it as "shit" and told the band to go away and write some tunes. They subsequently did, and with the aid of Brian Eno the album has become regarded as a classic in shoegaze circles, but it was pretty evident around that time that songwriting wasn't as natural and free flowing for [...]

It's a mind-blowing list of new releases on perhaps the biggest release date of the year, so let's get started. You're going to need all the time you can get to pick these up. First up, the long-awaited second album by The xx is potentially KEXP listeners' album of the year. While it's but one of a number of hotly anticipated this year - others come from Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective, and Grizzly Bear - The xx strip down their sound to a sultry murmur, like a whisper in your ear. Oliver Sims and Romy Madley-Croft never sounded [...]
