"I was looking out the window and a witch flew by, whipping her broom and she said you're gonna die..." Just got the sad news that influential modern artist Mike Kelley has passed away. He was 57, and was found dead at home yesterday, an apparent suicide caused by depression. Music fans will mainly know Kelley through his artwork for Sonic Youth's fine Dirty album, but he was also a founding member of Detroit cult artpunkband Destroy All Monsters. For further reading: a full obit from the LA Times . Destroy All [...]

OK, I am in class right now.; but we've been debating what criteria determine which social customs are going to be legally protected in court and I've already stated and defended my point. Now my classmates are arguing what the civil war was about. Duh, state rights. So most of you know I either download music or buy it from dollar bins at Reckless and Half Price Books. My favorite in the first category is the new Cloud Nothings album, produced by Steve Albini and one of the best albums I've [...]

Ourselves, along with Hit City U.S.A., couldn't be more excited for our show this Saturday at The Satellite featuring some of our favorite bands, PAPA , Cillie Barnes, and Lesands. Like any girl that's worth "rounding the bases for", it's always better to get to know them before you reach home plate. Of course these bands are all amazing, but falling in love is all about the details. So take some time and get to know each of these acts on a more intimate level. Here are 5 things you NEED to know about 3 bands you [...]

I bought this on CD back in 1995 after seeing a live performance of Mike Watt featuring Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl performing "Big Train" on John Stewart's late night show . Remember that show? Ball-Hog Or Tugboat? is anything but consistent as its detractors will undoubtedly raise as it's main flaw. Yes, it's Mike Watt showcasing his incredible cast of musical friends. But, you can't argue with songs like Piss-Bottle Man (featuring vocals by Evan Dando), Chinese Firedrill (featuring vocals by Frank Black), [...]

A word on naming your songs: Generally speaking, a song title like "Off The Wall" (or "Thriller," for that matter) should be way off-limits for those releasing their first proper "singer-songwriter" album. And generally speaking, those releasing their first proper "singer-songwriter" aren't building off of the Immaculate Credential of a career playing in Sonic Youth! So, dear alt.god Ranaldo, there is space in this world for your "Off The Wall," and a beautiful original called "Like A Rolling Stone" too, if you have one in you. Whatever! Moving forward, if we can distill this into some sort of a formula, [...]

MP3 : Off the Wall Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo has a solo album coming out on March 20 via Matador Records. Tour dates coming soon. Thurston Moore's solo album was my favorite of 2011. Will Lee make it onto my 2012 list? If this first song is any indication of the whole album, the magic Oasis-brand eightball says DEFINITELY MAYBE.

Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo will release his first song-based solo album, Between the Times & the Tides , on March 20th via Matador Records. "Off The Wall" is our first taste, and you can stream it below (via Matablog .) For the album, Ranaldo collaborated with current Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, former Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert, Wilco's Nels Cline, Jim O'Rourke, Irwin Menkin, Alan Licht, and John Medeski. C'est allé très vite en fait. Trois, quatre ans, grand max.
Disappears front man Brian Case is either the beneficiary of a never-ending treasure trove of material waiting to be put on wax at his convenience or a master of surrounding himself with a supporting cast that makes it look easy to put out at least one release every year since 2008 (or both). After last year's early entry Guider , the swansong for then-drummer and in-house producer Graeme Gibson, it would have been presumable - even understandable - for the remaining members of Disappears to take a step back and adjust the course on [...]

5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let's get weird. Photo by Michael Wells Words by Chris There's a lot of Raptures these days. Tuesday we're gonna die, Thursday we're gonna die. The good news is that it's all bullshit and nothing really matters! Come along this long road of long songs to the End of Days… [...]
