Though it's only March, Scotland's Sons and Daughters ' January release the Gift already has numerous writers in the blogosphere ramblin' on about year-end lists. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself (who knows what the future may hold), but I can safely say that it's very very solid. We're down to the final day of my imaginary SXSW schedule. Probably the best thing about my imagination is that I don't have to stay up to the wee hours of the morning to see some of these shows. This is the fifth year that The Scottish Arts Council in conjunction with BBC Radio Scotland has sponsored Scottish bands to attend South By Southwest in Austin, TX. On a recent record-buying binge, I snagged a copy of Sons & Daughters' second full-length album, This Gift. Admittedly, it was an impulse purchase. I did enjoy a couple of songs (Dance Me In, Taste The Last Girl) off their 2005 full-length debut, The Repulsion Box, and I did like the fact the Glasgow quartet often sounded like X's distant Scottish cousins, right down to the girl-boy tag-team vocals. As much as I enjoy remixes and productions I can never get a better feeling off an album created by a band. At the moment I have left behind all remixes and productions and I am getting absolutely absorbed with an overwhelming amount of magic coming from several albums. Sons and Daughters is famous for unique electro-indie rock that incorporates rockabilly, punk, blues and basically whatever else they are inspired by. Their new release, This Gift, is a testament to their quirky talent. With a new producer, the album is a remarkable improvement from past releases, offering a crisper, more eclectic sound with brighter vocals. "Darling" is probably the most danceable jam so far to come from Sons and Daughters, while "Rebel With The Ghost" mixes Motown with dirty garage rock. Lots of fantastic music releases this week, many of which we've been loving here at TYS for quite some time now. There are not as many big name releases this week, but we have three albums dropping from DC artists and several other good releases from a mixture of veterans and new favorites. Glasgow's Sons and Daughters have got it going on. The cool factor surrounding this band is through the roof in my opinion: Adele Bethel toured with Arab Strap (cool band) when she first came up with the idea for the band; they get picked up by Ba Da Bing Records (cool label) who release their first album, the 25 minute-long Love The Cup in 2003.
