Yeah, I totally forgot to do this last week, what with being distracted by... I dunno, life. So today, y'all are getting a two-fer. Ten, count 'em, ten songs that have been tickling my eardrums. 1. Red by Okkervil River, from Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See [Jagjaguwar, 2002] // A short film set to the song One of my favorite working bands, back before they had some of the flourish and polish they have now. This is ultimately a simple song, done in [...]

I hate the term "one-hit wonder". To me it's derogatory to a band's existence to label them as such, no matter how little success they had beyond the one song that everyone knows. I don't know if people would honestly classify Soul Coughing as a "one-hit wonder" but if I were ever to use the term I think I'd probably apply it to Soul Coughing. Well, that's not entirely true because I actually
Years ago, back in my days as a smoker, I'd finish each day with one last cigarette, sitting out on the porch (several porches, actually, and even a stack of phonebooks during my stint living in Phoenix) with some music floating around my head as I just sort of let everything draw to a close. And what closed out each day as much as the cigarette was that one last song I'd pick out to go along,

There is something about the last song of an album that has always seemed incredibly important to me. Perhaps because it's an opportunity to sum up everything conveyed over the course of the record - maybe just because it's the last impression the band or artist has a chance to leave with you. But I think it's no coincidence that some of my favorite albums have excellent last songs, and some of my favorite songs have found their home as the last track on an album. And so, I present to you my [...]

Last night marked the return of Spoon to Columbus, OH, this time, however, the general public could buy tickets . With coats wrapped tightly around our shivering torsos and hats pulled down well over our ears, we shuffled the hundred yards from the car through the 20 degree cold to the sparsely filled venue. The show was sold out, but at 7:30PM, still 45 minutes before Happy Chichester was set to open the festivities, not many folks had braved the frigid air to catch the first few bands. This would change, of [...]

Soul Coughing - Super Bon Bon (live) Does anyone out there miss SC as much as I do? Mike Doughty's solo work just doesn't compare. Enjoy a near-epic version of 'Super Bon Bon' below. The MP3 is taken from their 1998 gig at NYC's Irving Plaza. MP3: Soul Coughing - Super Bon Bon (live)

Getting through today's Mix Tape without making a complete ass of myself is going to take a portion of my cunning. No, wait... all of my cunning. Let me explain. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. [...]

Its a cold afternoon in Dallas with this mild snowfall, I went out and threw my obligatory snowball and came in quick and put together my soundtrack to the winter weather with a snowy theme. They Might Be Giants - Snowball In Hell They Might Be Giants - When It Rains It Snows Mirah - Cold Cold Water (remix) Soul Coughing - Suzy Snowflake Low - [...]
His name is John M. Higgins. It was a sudden heart attack. He died at the hospital early this morning. He was 45 years old. I met John in 1990 at a trade conference. We were both working; he was a trade reporter and I was working the press room. My wife introduced him as someone she thought I would like. That first conversation, he told me of his latest music purchase, a used copy of Ice Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted . We were instant [...]
