There's something to be said for straightforward, compelling rock in a musical landscape dominated by programmable pop. If it were still 2012, this track from Austin, TX's TV Torso would have ranked near the top of my (non-existent) Best Songs of the Year list. Released last October, the title track from the band's three song EP Clear Lake Strangler is a total guitar/handclap masterpiece; I've listened to it incessantly since running across it on Bandcamp yesterday, absorbing its nuance and roughly hewn vocals as much as possible.

After Sound Team’s Capitol Records debut Movie Monster was panned by Pitchfork in 2006, founding member Bill Baird hilariously reenacted the review with homemade footage of a dummy being literally stabbed with a pitchfork, thrown off a cliff, and lit on fire. The video is a surprisingly accurate snapshot of Baird as an artist, with its do-it-yourself approach and aesthetic, dead-pan humor, and eye for detail, like the comically dramatic piano score he composed for the video. After Sound Team's breakup in 2007, that DIY mentality became Baird's M.O.: he founded his own studio in Austin [...]

Just last month I wrote about Bill Baird's excellent Bandcamp-delivered, woozy, psych-rock single "Wino Strut." Now, the former Sound Team bandmate and Sunset auteur is set to release an 8-song LP August 1st dubbed Goodbye Vibrations . Recorded on 1/2" 8 track and mixed to cassette tape, the album will be offered as a digital download via Bandcamp or on 12" vinyl with handmade cover art. If you dig Baird's music, this an opportunity to procure a seriously rare piece of art, as only 50 are being pressed and each cover comes with its own [...]

Matt Oliver of the great TV Torso recently linked via Twitter to the Bandcamp page of his former Sound Team bandmate, Bill Baird. Waiting for me there was "Wino Strut," a woozy, warm, and ambient bit of psych-rock. This song has seriously crept it's way under my skin. I don't know much about Baird, just that he releases songs under his own name as well as the Sunset moniker, and has a serious knack for experimenting with analog recording. "Wino Strut," uploaded to Bandcamp just last week, was recorded in Austin at Baby Blue Studio by [...]

While it's fun to hate on Pitchfork , the truth is that most of the time they get it right. There is that rare occasion though, when they'll put up a review that I find to be way off the mark. The most recent example being the review one of my favorite albums of the year, Patrick Wolf's Lupercailia . The reviewer's argument seems to be solely focused on an admittedly pompous quote from Wolf himself and the overly-kitschy lyrics. There's even an admission that "if you strip away the unctuous lyrical [...]
Sound Team had sadly long since disbanded by the time I fell in love with them. All that remained was to soak up their brilliant 'Movie Monster' album and fish out occasional live performances. This video from hip French site La Blogotheque's legendary 'Concerts A Emporter' series captures them in all their brilliance and gives [...]

He is eight days from home and Carl Shapiro, namesake of DC-based Shapiro, can’t wait to get into his own bed. The 6-foot-2, lion-maned bassist has been sleeping in a 15-passenger van for the past month, on the road with his bandmates to spread their sound of piano-infused pop-rock with audiences in small clubs and venues all over the United States. Here is a look at the band's journey toward success and recognition.

Everyone in Austin knows the name TV Torso by now, right? Well, it's made up of some of the kids from Soundteam , and a few new friends, namely James Rhea. The guys have been working really hard, and we're happy to announce that they'll be releasing their Status Quo Vadis EP on August 31st, followed by a nice jaunt across the states. You can pre-order the entire EP, as well as stream it in it's entirety over at the group's BANDCAMP [...]
I will begin my From the Closet today by saying that you should check out the wikipedia page about Austin band Sound Team if you don't know their history. It's a long story about a band that showed heaps of promise before breaking up amongst turmoil in the band and dissatisfaction with their label. Like I said, check our their wikipedia page and read up. Today I am bringing you a song from Sound Team's one and only major label LP Movie Monster . Despite what some people may say, I actually enjoyed that record [...]
Austin band Sleep Good is the brain child of local resident Will Paterson who has spent time in big name bands like Sunset and Sound Team . Will could probably be most closely compared to Alan Palomo since both are young lads in their very early 20s and both have already put out massive amounts of creative material in a very short amount of time. For the longest time, Will worked on his Sleep Good project completely solo and only used the name as a creative moniker. A year or so ago though [...]
Once again back is the incredible..." - Public Enemy (Bring The Noise) There's not much you can depend on in this world, lovers always seem to let you down, there's never anything good on TV, the radio is lame and the Knicks never win but there is one thing that won't let you down and it's LMDM. And guess what, it's back again for the 13th time with 13 new songs custom made for now, not now but right now. I was putting this tape together for Steph and couldn't get over [...]

A long, long time ago (2006) in a land far, far away (Austin), Sound Team released its major-label debut, Movie Monster , after years of DIY releases & touring and mounting "next-big-thing" buzz. It was a tough album to pin down, with influences on the sleeve and all over the map (Spoon, Interpol, Walkmen, U2); the only constants were layered, pulsing electronics and big hooks. It's soulful, impassioned and still holds up today, I think. But Movie Monster got mixed reviews ( this may hold the record for the most grotesquely snarky), it didn't sell well, [...]

TV Torso may not be a household name at this point, but I'm sure some of you are familiar with the Austin band Sound Team that disbanded forever in 2007. We mention them because two founding members of TV Torso , Matt Oiver (guitar/vocals) and Jordan Johns (drums) were both members of that now defunct Austin band. After adding bassist Austin Jones, the band has started fresh and are planning to take the Austin world by storm. TV Torso call their sound minimal rock music and try to keep their sound as simplistic as [...]
