Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Soundgarden An Evening with Soundgarden Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8 The Tabernacle - 152 Luckie Street NW in Atlanta 30303 SOLD OUT! Pessimistic Moe is here. He hangs around a lot, whispering shit in my ear. He's kind of a dick, but he tends to be right a lot of the time. Maybe the two things go hand in hand, I don't know. Right now he's trying to temper my expectations on Soundgarden tomorrow. And, Christ, I have [...]
photos by Dana (distortion) Yavin Soundgarden at the Borgata - 5/3/13 The reunited Soundgarden , who have played NYC quite a few times in the past year, brought their spring tour through the area for a show at Atlantic City's Borgata this past Friday (5/3). The setlist leaned most heavily on their classic albums, Superunknown and Badmotorfinger , in addition to 2012's King Animal , but included a [...]
About two months ago, my iPod shuffle landed on The Black Crowes' "A Conspiracy" as I was running around the Tan in Melbourne, and I had one of my increasingly semi-regular '90s moments. They were, after all, some of the best years of my life so far. As flashbacks of Bill and Hillary Clinton filled my head, I remembered that Atlanta's Robinson brothers and company were my second-favorite rock & roll group of the decade (and the genre's top squawkers, high above Sheryl Crow and Counting Crows), and promptly spent the next 24 hours or so listening [...]

Of allebei tegelijk. Dat de vervreemdende titel van hun EP Cygnet Strumpet House verwijst naar een oud vervallen bordeel langs een weg in Frankrijk kan hierbij geen toeval zijn. Deze mannen weten hoe je hout laat kraken... Hnnggghhh... You got me... You got me [...]
“Phenomenal”, concluded one of thousands who were exalted enough to enjoy the triumphant return of the once and hopefully future kings of grunge/alternative metal/hard rock/Seattle swagger or whatever else sort of label you want to try to hurl at Soundgarden and see if it sticks. Truer word… So one might have expected Chris Cornell and company to string together a series of (too?) familiar radio-friendly hits like “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman” to please the across-the-generations masses? Errrr, not exactly. Try the likes of “Blind Dogs”, [...]
