![[Hype Hype Hooray] My Winter of Discontent or Why I Finally Get Grunge](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4684799_lg.jpg)
Hype Hype Hooray is a biweekly “critique” of the music scene and the blogosphere that feeds it, told through the lens of Jamie Hale, a journalist who likes music about as much as he likes scotch and a firm leather chair. Please enjoy with a grain of salt. Not long ago, I drove into Portland, Oregon–my car full of every precious thing I own, my heart full of hope for this Pacific Northwest wonderland. The sun shone brightly that day, a near cloudless winter sky greeting me to a new land and a new life. Then [...]

Two fixtures of the hard rock scene are coming together today as Dave Grohl is filming the video for By Crooked Steps by Soundgarden according to a report by Blabbermouth . By Crooked Steps is a track off the recently released Soundgarden comeback album King Animal. Grohl has been a Soundgarden fan for a long time even taking in one of the band's 2011 shows from the floor and banging his head like there was no tomorrow. While the Grohl-directed video [...]

Soundgarden at Irving Plaza in November ( more by Dana (distortion) Yavin ) The reunited Soundgarden have been having a hell of a year (at least in NYC). They performed a Live on Letterman concert in November and later that same night joined frontman Chris Cornell at his solo show at Bowery Ballroom for a few Soundgarden cuts. Then they played three intimate North American shows including a sold out Irving Plaza show . Around that same time, they announced a [...]

While the days of grunge galore remain frozen in the ‘90s, your best excuse to plunge back into said era is via none other than Soundgarden’s latest, King Animal . Hailing from Seattle, Washington—aka grungeland—Soundgarden was founded back in 1984 by singer Chris Cornell, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and guitarist Kim Thayil. While the line-up has changed a few times since then, it currently consists of Cornell, Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron, and bassist Ben Shepherd. By the time 1994’s smash hit Superunknown came around, they’d already released 3 albums— Ultramega OK (1988), Louder Than Love [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Cindy Ord, Getty Even during their 13-year long hiatus, the members of Soundgarden were busy dudes. Chris Cornell launched a solo career before delivering three records with Audioslave and an ill-conceived collaboration with producer Timbaland . Bass player Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron played in Wellwater Conspiracy and Hater [...]

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande No need for Chris Cornell to communicate with fans at the rail by reading their lips as he's accustomed to at mega venues where the distance is a block away. Because last night at The Fonda, the talented vocalist/guitarist said he could actually hear the fans talking between songs. It was this kind of exchange that made the record release gig with Seattle rockers Soundgarden an early xmas present (and the best one) for the lucky fans who got a ticket. Nothing like hearing [...]

Check out my photos of Soundgarden at the Fonda Theatre over at Stereogum .

Soundgarden continued their endless promotion behind King Animal last night with a special sold-out performance at Los Angeles' intimate Fonda Theatre. Our photographer Debi Del Grande managed to squeeze in and we're told the band knocked out a whopping 25 song set and celebrated drummer Matt Cameron's 50th birthday with a cake and song. Experience the night with Del Grande's many photos and the night's setlist below. [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Music Appreciation Frank Micelotta, Getty Right now's probably a good time to revisit Tina Turner . She's probably best remembered to anyone under 50 as a giant-haired ballad singer from the '80s, but Tina used to be badass . After all, it's not everyone who can say they duetted with Mick Jagger and were in The Who 's movie Tommy . [...]
Having appeared on Jimmy Kimmel the night before, Soundgarden packed out the Fonda Theatre for an intimate show celebrating the release of their welcomed return album King Animal . They were also celebrating the birthday of drummer Matt Cameron, who received a cake on stage. Soundgarden sounded phenomenal as they dropped a twenty-five song set that clocked in at nearly two and a half hours. Check out the gallery above and the setlist below. Read More...

Local Natives at Sasquatch / photo by James Bailey Local Natives will be releasing Hummingbird on January 29th and today dropped a video for the single "Breakers". The song is as full of harmony as ever, and the video features band members rolling, falling, and stumbling backwards along the coast, sand flying. ► Soundgarden has "Been Away Too Long," if you believe the bands fans and their video. Chris Cornell and crew are back in a big way — "King Animal," their first album since 1996, came out two weeks ago, and tonight the band headlines the Fonda Theatre. (They return to L.A. for a three-night stint at the Wiltern starting Feb. 15.) ► If those Seattle dudes aren't loud enough for you, maybe you're ready for the Metalocalypse ? Dethklok hits the Palladium, supported by All That Remains, Machine Head and the Black Dahlia Murder. ► [...]
