For fans of Hannu Karjalainan, 2009 has been an aural bliss. First his giant EP "Harhailua" which clocks 31 minutes, then Hintergarten his second full-length, and what can we say, they're both special releases. Hannu conjures intricate landscapes, not unlike the geographical landscapes of Finland, and fills them with sonic representations of human memories. Thinking of how to describe it in words was pretty hard, but I think I may have a slight point there. It's definitely contemplating music, a music to sit by and defrag your memories to. In that sense it fits with the iconized image of Scandinavia [...]

As rain poured upon the city and NXNE unfolded around me, me and my trusty umbrella strolled on down to the right up the street from my house location of Soundscapes to take in the bewildering Ohbijou as they performed songs from their latest Last Gang release Beacons . Shamefully, I have not yet listened to the album, but from what I hear, it's a delightful companion to their debut Swift Feet For Troubling Time s; an album that was pretty dang near perfect, if you ask me. Although I [...]

"Mosca delivers a dense, out of this stratosphere ambient sound, inherently powerful yet deceptively tranquil. Such is the calming nature of Mosca's wall-shaking ambient noise, music that drips with all the viscosity of syrup, that those who listen to it are wrapped in a thick cocoon of sanguine sound. Witnesses of his rare but legendary live performances will atest to Mosca's immense power. Foundations have been shaken, plaster has been cracked , light fixtures have been broken, and minds have been well and truly melted. There has even been rumours of outer-body experiences and other unnatural psychological states. Mosca is [...]

Back home after a short trip, here's the folky selection we promised but couldn't deliver on Friday. New stuff from Akron/Family's Set 'em Wild, Set 'em Free , Boduf Songs new EP on Under the Spire , Fire on Fire's The Orchard (Young God) and DM Stith introduced to us by Simone of Discoballbreaker . Kind of a male Joanna Newsom. Also don't forget to check out DM Stith's guest post on Motel de Moka . Akron/Family - Many Ghosts [...]

Been meaning to post these two pieces from Bela Emerson's Hespera from last year. Bela belongs to this new creed of daring musicians like Fennesz & Aidan Baker who take their instruments further by processing it with an array of loops and effects. On Hespera she succeeds in creating experimental yet organic soundscapes with her cello and multiple pedals whether in the form of dronescapes or rhythmic looping work and sometimes good melodic sequences reminiscent of Okkyung Lee . Order Hespera from Boomkat or from her [...]

If you check the academic journals in the social sciences field today, you'll see that most of them deal with language, culture and thought processes. To deal with the perceived difference between Turkish and British cultures I've always thought of an hypothetical case where the Turks have evolved an institution like the BBC in place of the bland, etatist broadcasting institution that shaped the Turkish worldview until the mid 1990s, the TRT. That monolithic language present in all the state institutions, the formal education system and dramatically in the universities as well, have minimised the cultural wealth of the Empire [...]

The transition from spring to summer brings two new mixes from Low Light Mixes central command. We've had a fair amount of rain lately so both mixes are "rain" mixes. Rain evokes so many memories & emotions, it's a great theme for mixes. Using field recordings really helps hold the mix together. I try not to over do it with the rain sounds, hopefully it works well. This first mix is a vocal mix, well mostly vocal, there are three instrumentals hiding in there. All the tunes have the word "rain" in [...]

I have to say that I was very happy to hear that Dog Day had added this instore performance to their list of things to do when they came to Toronto last week. It was looking ever more likely that I was not going to be able to attend the show at Lee's Palace on Thursday night, so this was definitely an unexpected treat. Also unexpected was the fact that they put on a fairly charged performance. Oddly enough, there are people out there who just seem happier being sad. I've never understood it myself, but [...]

The prolific ambient composer Ian D. Hawgood has a new 4 track EP out on the newly discovered Luvsound netlabel as if we've all gotten over his previous one Enfants Ruraux on 12Rec . The title " Tents and Hills " sums it up perfectly, peacefuly bright sounds, the smell of woods and the sunshine in your eyes. I've never been a camper or a forest & lake guy BUT this one almost makes me teleport to one. Guaranteed to give you instant calm if you have sunny weather. The naive artwork is [...]

One of last year's gems was Polish composer Jacaszek's Treny which painted hauntingly cinematic B&W soundscapes with the help of cohorts Maja Sieminska, Anja Smiszek-Wesolowska and Stefan Wesolowski. With his new release Pentral he's set to describe the interior of a gothic church by means of sounds. A hefty project! After spending days in Gdansk churches Oliwa Cathedral, St. Nicolas' church, St. Mary's Basilica recording chants, organs and noises, he set off to process the samples to create a work in 10 parts. Pentral is not a pleasant ride to say the least, [...]
This is some of the best drone music out there. First came across them in July 2008 and been listening ever since. This cut is my favorite. No Sky - Adaption (Mp3)
