Do you remember The Soup Dragons? If you're from the UK and / or of a certain age (the certain age that means you actually remember buying albums on cassette), you probably do. If not, this band probably passed you by completely. Which would be a shame because, while Hotwired isn't necessarily one of the very best albums ever, it's a classic of my 1990s and can definitely still stand up tall today. Although I only really listened to Hotwired , a little research shows that The Soup Dragons were more than I [...]

Yesterday, we had the B side to the normal 123 of the Soup Dragons big hit "I'm Free". Today, the B side to the Terry Farley Boys Own remix of I'm Free . This time the track is a remix of Backwards Dog by Marius de Vries and Steve Sidelynk. This is a more messed up rock track. Doesn't quite work though. They can't let go the rock structure of the original to bend it properly out of shape. The Soup Dragons - Backwards Dog (Remix) Buy

We had the Soup Dragons a month ago . Hailing from Scotland - more info here - their big hit was, of course, I'm Free. Not the John Inman cover version that some might have hoped but a re-hash of a Rolling Stones track that was a huge success for them. A couple of posts about B sides to that hit. First, the B side to the normal 123 which is a big loping rocky track, given a sort of dance sensibility wash. The Soup Dragons - Lovegod Dub [...]

Head gone astray - The Soup Dragons I just found out that the Soup Dragons became a baggy band, something so sad that i've warn off every possible link in my mind to this being the same band that sang that I'm Free song. So sad. That this once perfect band succumbed to that turn of that decade disease - my least favourite music save for white reggae - and that they had more success in this phase than in their pop [...]

Very special episode of Danger Radio. We play the legendary and rarely found C86 album in it's entirety in order. Along the way we discuss the bands and what it all means to myself and my co-host Jake Ryan. This is one of about 5 albums I can point to that shaped my musical tastes and I'm proud to say that it sits at the top of that list. PLAYLIST: Velocity Girl – Primal Scream Happy Head – The Mighty Lemon Drops Pleasantly Surprised – The [...]

Head gone astray - The Soup Dragons I have come to the conclusion that Scotland has the best bands. The best pop bands anyway, they all being strewn over a few decades, and maybe it is a per capita thing too. Ask me and i'll give you a very impressive list. And this might just be the best Scottish pop song ever written. Perfect part follows perfect part, it begins with the chorus, that guitar line is wonderful, and i wish that B key [...]

Independence Day comes and goes with nary a thought to most people. The more I read about history the more I admire the Founding Fathers, the men who took the bull by the horns on D-Day and the blood that was shed so I didn't have to live my life under another government of tyranny. Certain forces are still coming after our collective freedom, but chances are I'll outlast them at my age. The Fourth of July is a really cool holiday, but I don't think a lot of folks think of it as anything other than a long weekend that splits the summer months. [...]

Hey Diddley Ho neighbors! It's Mother's Day. The day that probably ranks right next to your anniversaries as the day you fear forgetting the most. Thank God the sports world uses pink bats and ribbons huh? Way to keep us on track. Facebook helps me remember my friend's birthdays, but only if I bother to log in. I don't have that anniversary problem, but I do have a mother. She now hangs her hat in Las Vegas as she enjoys her Golden Years. She goes to see The Gambler (Kenny Rogers) and waxes nostalgic about The Rat Pack as she [...]

I know that the sweet song "Ally, ally oxen free" by BMX Bandits and the South-Korean singer YeonGene , was a favourite by many of our listeners on our free compilation "Birdsongs, Beesongs" . YeonGene will release her new album "Bonnie Gene" next monday (February 8th) on the Poppydisc -label, and "ally ally oxen free" is one of the many great songs on it, - among them several written and performed by BMX Bandits together with her. BMX Bandits is [...]

like my britpop urge, i've recently been listening to a fair bit of baggy, that scene where former indie no-hopers popped a few e's and suddenly discovered that "there'd always been a dance element to our music". thus bands like the farm and the soup dragons, after years of toiling in indie obscurity all of a sudden were on top of the pops. the real kings of the scene of course were happy mondays and the stone roses, closely supported by organ ginders insprial carpets and the charlatans. you know all this already of course. for [...]

The " I Hang Suspended " blog recently posted the first three singles by The Soup Dragons , all of which were released by The Subway Organization between 1986-1987. The first of these, the " Whole Wide World " single, remains one of my all-time favorite singles. I was fortunate enough to buy it on a trip to England with my parents in 1987 thanks to an awesome shop owner in Preston, England (who also fortunately convinced me to pick up the first three Talulah [...]

The trippy-hippy quartet from Glasgow, Scotland , The Soup Dragons scored big in the U.S. in the early 1990s. The band formed in the mid-1980s found success on their third album, Lovegod and fourth album, Hotwired in the States with such tracks as the Stones cover, a reggae-inspired freedom chant, "I'm Free" and the the groovy rocker, "Divine Thing." I remember checking them out in early 90s at the WHFestival in Washington D.C. and being pleasantly surprised by their blend of 60's-infused Brit Pop. I sorely missed them on their [...]

Non-linear Sod it, the time has come. Blow off the cobwebs, crank up the loudspeaker, cos an announcement is in order here at pogo a go-go: FiL is hereby abandoning linear time. What? You thought I was packing it in? Not a chance, Dearest Friend. Yes, yes, I know postings have been rather thin around here as of late, but it's a trickle, not a drought. I still have stories to tell, it's just that I can't [...]

In 1986, between the rise of The Smiths and The Stone Roses, NME released a compilation once referred to as "the most indie thing that ever existed." Really? The most indie thing ever?! No way! Annoying anecdotes aside, C86 (Casette 1986) was a tape featuring British bands that would help to usher in the underground musical movement known as indie-pop, or what some call "twee-pop" (even though much of the music on the comp was tilted towards punk, no-wave and arguably, shoegaze...go figure). Unlike it's predecessor, C81 , only a couple of [...]

So, lucky weekly mix number thirteen...and it's the inevitable C86 mix. Many others have written about the legendary C86 cassette from NME (after all, there's even an excellent blog called Indie MP3 - Keeping C86 Alive ), and I doubt I have anything particularly new to add to the discussion. However, it continues to amaze me how one mail-order cassette spawned a genre, a scene, and an attitude toward music. Though NME had released a cassette five years earlier in conjunction with Rough Trade, appropriately titled C81, it never gained the same mythical status despite the fact that the [...]
According to her myspace she's turned 30, but my drivers liscence says I weigh 190 pounds so who knows what her real age is. Kamala has been a very large influence on my musical tastes. I used to steal all her tapes and CDs on a regular basis. She had some of the best taste in music out of anyone I know until she started getting into 60's and 70's music. So today is a very large post of some of the music my sister has [...]

Such a good album and here's the banger that started it all. Jay-Z - Aint No Nigga (Feat Foxy Brown) ( ysi ) / ( zp3 ) Yes yes y'all to the beat y'all. They were sampling the Clash in the 90's too.. So, this is goodbye, at least for a fair bit. I'm taking tomorrow for myself, and then I'll spend the next handful of days with my family before flying to London on Thursday. If there aren't any major complications with that part, I'll be tucked in my new home on Friday...but I expect that Simon and I will have some, um, catching up to do over the weekend. Business should resume as normal week after next and thanks again from both of us for all the well-wishes. Since I'll have a fairly lengthy absence, I'm giving you my [...]
