A lot of the "country" music coming out of Texas seems to me to be too corporate. Even if the artist is independent the music is fairly obvious and shallow, the branding of the artist is too clunky, and the range of performances are rather narrow. I don't want to name names but if you are curious what I mean check out the top ten over at Lone Star Music. So where am I going with this? Just that Shawn Nelson's new cd is like a breath of fresh air compared to the [...]

Ah, after a couple grueling weeks, i finally get to sit back and relax for a night. And there's no better way to do that than with some easy listening - not the genre - but the true definition of easy listening - pure instrumental music . i haven't done one of these since my first week of blogging. i was listening to Cold Roses today, and thought to myself that i would dig that album [...]

For the first time my blog writing has paid off in a tangible form - other than the simple satisfaction i get out of completing a post and feeling like i've accomplished something. This payoff is as good as free money, maybe better: Free Music . ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------- i mentioned the other day how an artist out of Brooklyn contacted me and wanted to send me some of her music to see if i liked it. Sorry for the delay there, but I have great news! Emily got into the MFA Sculpture program at Illinois State (with a full-ride, to boot!) and we'll officially be moving to Bloomington/ Normal, IL this summer. So we've been planning stuff and all that jazz, but now let's get back to some new music! South Austin Jug Band (Austin, TX) I'm hoping against hope that these guys are some straight up Bluegrass. I want straw in the teeth and no shoes, dirty overalls and a rope for a belt. Well, it's [...]

Considering that the year is 2006 and not 1959, I feel like I've been inundated with honky- tonk country of late. One of the people partially to blame is Jim Lauderdale . Jim's pulling a Guns and Roses type thing by releasing two albums simultaneously. Also I finally caught up with the band South Austin Jug Band and also received Mike Stinson's Boronda Records disc Last Fool At The Bar as well as being given permission to write about (and link to an mp3) from Signature Sound's band Crooked [...]
