East of LA's Jimbo Jenkins continues to stay on his DJ mix grind into the new year, with his new project "Dirty South Breaks". On this mix, Jimbo fuses some of the most known Southern a cappella's with Hip-Hop breakbeats. Our fondness for trill/trap Southern music here at East of LA is apparent, so with this project, it was Jimbo's goal to present this music in a way a hip-hop fan, who might be weary of the Southern trap style, would even enjoy. Where as you could easily imagine someone like KRS-One or Rakim rocking on [...]

Not much to say here. The latest collaboration between the out-of-this-world mafioso Future and Brick Squad 1017 president Gucci Mane is just another hood hit in the steady slew of Trap Back release cuts. The mixtape drops on February 5.

T.I., in many ways, is the Gilbert Arenas of hip-hop. Both men began their careers as overlooked talents, with T.I. seeing his major label debut album flop and Gilbert being completely passed over in the first round of the NBA Draft. Through hard work and perseverance, however, both elevated themselves to the top of their respective years over the next few years (in fact, I'd still welcome an '06-level T.I. or Gilbert Arenas as great addition to any hip-hop record or basketball team). But after nearly reaching "best in the world" status, both came crashing back down to Earth, mainly [...]

In 2011, after years of hard work on the mixtape circuit building a devoted underground following, an XXL Freshman releases his debut studio album with the co-sign of one of the greatest MC's of all time. Not only does the album receive overwhelmingly positive reviews, it's better than the release earlier in the year from aforementioned legendary MC. And despite the many notable debut albums to drop this year, this description can only be applied to one rookie. No, not J. Cole. It's (surprise!) the pride of Gadsden, Alabama: Michael Wayne Atha AKA Yelawolf. [...]

In 2004, Chris Rock released his brilliant stand-up DVD, Never Scared . During one particularly memorable seven-minute segment , he delivers an insightful (and hilariously obscene) evaluation of the evolution of hip-hop: "In the old days, it was easy to defend rap music, intellectually… and I love all the rappers today, but it's hard to defend 'I got hoes in different area codes.' It's hard to defend 'Move bitch, get out the way.' 'Well as you can see, there's a bitch in his way that he needs to move, thus the term "move [...]
Yet another overlooked British band putting out great tunes. This guy I used to work with got me on South, and I could not believe I had never heard them before. This song is one of their best.

Driving through Georgia right now ( Tycho show tonight w/ Little Dragon at Masquerade, Atlanta ) and came across these vintage racing logos on Sarcoptiform's flickr . Makes me wonder what it must have been like to sit back with a Coors wearing a Deliverance-era-Burt-Reynolds- neoprene-vest / life-preserver at a drag strip in the 19702s south. I feel like somehow Aaron Draplin has lived out that exact same scenario via some sort of swap-meet wormhole time warp. I also have to believe he has all of these decals somewhere in his vast collection of great American [...]

MP3 A new track from Big K.R.I.T. , featuring 2Chainz, 8Ball, and MJG. It's titled "Money On the Floor," and has a fat, Southern beat. The pitch-shifted vocals over the hook are another nice tough as well. Basically, this track has everything I dug so much about Returnof4eva , so you won't hear me complaining. Download it via the link above. K.R.I.T.'s Def Jam-released Live From the Underground is set for release in 2012, so be lookin' out for that. [...]

It's hard to imagine what Young Jeezy's legacy will look like whenever he stops rapping. His influence is certainly undeniable. He's nowhere near the first rapper from Atlanta to hit it big, but he's the pioneer of the hoarse-voiced, "the lyrics don't really matter that much as long as they sound terrifying" ATL flow that Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame use to attack microphones. At the moment, Jeezy is considered one of the most respectable emcees in the game (even if there is some confusion over whether he ever dropped the "Young" from his name), and more than six years after releasing [...]

Yo Baby Daddy (Top Billin Remix) - Gotty Boi Chris by TheBouncespot Yo Baby Daddy (Original) - Gotty Boi Chris by TheBouncespot Hey yo, this is a good one. As you may know, we're have our roots deeply on rap music and here's one dope remix project we got be part of. Featuring Yelawolf, this Big K.R.I.T. track is from the Mississippi rapper's forthcoming mixtape, the Last King 2 . Obviously, I'm looking forward to this tape. Many of y'all already know how much I loved this guy's last release . As usual, K.R.I.T. brings some great, jazzy samples and a fantastic hook. The surprise for me, though, is Yelawolf. I was kinda on the fence with the guy, thinking he was destined to walk in the steps of Eminem. Oh, I'll withhold judgement until the guy's next album drops in [...]

Heute erscheint das neue Video zu 'Back Down South' der Kings of Leon. Das Video wurde diesen Monat in Nashville und fängt perfekt die Stimmung des Songs als Hommage an den Süden ein. I'm not going to even lie, this was an artist I slept on. Even when seeing he made the recent XXL Freshman list I still paid no attention to him. I recently saw a somewhat new video of his song "Dreaming", and I started to think that maybe I give this dude from the south a shot. I downloaded his 'Return Of 4 Eva' tape off of one of his personal sites HERE because I personally believe if you really want to get into an artist, give the whole album a spin. Let me tell you that this [...]
Be wary, those below the Mason-Dixon line, because Mad Decent's spacey fuzz pop dude Bosco Delrey is coming to haze up your towns, touring with resident distorto-destroyers Sleigh Bells. With all of the high school fetishism of Sleigh Bells recently, the pairing is a total win, because if Alexis and Derek are the Ally Sheedy [...]
